  • Simply magical!

  • Thank you Hayley, thank you very much.

  • as half scott this song holds a place in my heart but i cry everytime i hear this beautiful song

  • Ireland Is Such A Beautiful Place.... :)

P.S. Im Sorta Only Sayin This Cuz I Live In Ireland!! <3

  • i like this girl ..a quite angelic tone nice very nice indeed

  • Sorry.........but it has to be sung by a man !! Dont attack me for the Mother and son bit.........Thats a different song.

  • Listen to LOUISE FLORENCE singing this though :O Let me know what you think cos personally I think Louise Florence is better :/ :O

  • @samueljyap not only do they sing this song you should add to the list Kathrine Jenkins from Wales and Judith Durham (The Seekers) a folk group from the 60s who are Australian.

  • I have heard Sarah Brightman, Sissel and now Hayley. It is hard to say which one has a purer and more angelic voice. Sarah has more power and vibrato, but Sissel is purer, and Hayley is plainly angelic. But I enjoy these pure voices all the same. Thank God for such gifts...

  • Louise Florence singing O Danny Boy at a benefit concert for Cystic Fibrosis, Ballinagh, Co. Cavan on 30th March 2011

  • Very good!

  • okay im like almost in tyears. ILOVE HAYLEY she is amaizng!!!!!! xx

  • i got a sansa clip+ for christmas this year, and danny boy was pre loaded on it. It was sund by a guy, and i thought it was ok i guess. I looked up Hayley westerena- pokarekare ana on youtube and saw this on the side bar. So much better that the version i have!!!

  • *sob* So beautiful..

  • I grew up with this song it was a family favorite. This song is like a visit from a angle whoes visits are few and far between.Take care ADonovan43

  • this song was played at my grandpa's funeral, makes me cry every time.

  • Hayley uses her lean voice to great advantage with this song. I think it very hard to sing and she makes it sound easy. She is a very intelligent singer, possibly one of the best young singers alive today though I prefer a thicker color in the voice and less reverberation from the recording. Don't get me wrong, this is a great rendition of that song.

  • voice of an angel

  • beautiful.

did you know that if you go to ireland they will never play this song in a bar or something because it was written by an englishmen who never went to ireland.

  • @TheMusicoftheNightxx That's a little silly, the tune is from Ireland although the lyrics aren't...

  • I like the scenery, but I really like Hayley's voice. Her voice and Amy Lee's are like angels. That would make an awesome duet.

  • The digital artifacts are off-putting. Is there pitch correction going on or something? It's downright distracting.

  • @noglider If you are listening through your computer speakers, I suggest you try using a good pair of earphones or different speakers to see if you get a different effect.I have had the same sort of problem on some computers and so have other people. This problem seems to occur with certain sopranos (don't ask me why exactly). To be eligible for the British Classical charts an album must not have any "background Synthesization".

  • @Sqid101 so what your saying is that this is not nessed with at all in the studio? this is her PURE voice?

  • Comment removed

  • @noglider she can sing can't she

  • Oh danny boy, I love you so. This song makes me cry. :,(

I don't know, the voice and the rythm and the beauty just touches me.

  • This is a voice to remember .

  • The most beautiful voice ever heard and the best rendition

  • XD I wish I could sing like her. Her voice is so amazing.

  • So beautifully sung, so clear and and such wonderful pictures. I have heard many renditions, yet I would say this is my favorite now.

  • This is so sad, yet so beautiful.

I wept tears of joy just knowing that mankind, though destructive, exploiting and selfish, can create something as wonderful as this.

  • I have definitely fallen in love with her voice

  • The song is an Irish lullaby that's why there are pictures of Ireland.

  • Hayley has a voice like an angel. She has one of the most wonderful voices I have ever heard. She is also fantastically beautiful.

  • next year, this is my solo && ensmable song, already practicing. :)

  • Her voice is stunning. It's so crystal clear. It just echos and resonates... like an angel's. :) Beautiful.

  • beautiful

  • breath taking cant beleive I never new of her befor! all I can say is waw Iv not heard one thing she has sung Iv not liked or not adorde!

  • Id like to put her in my truck and have her sing when i want her to,Kinda like a human stereo but more awesome.

  • Id like to put her in my truck and have her sing when i want her to,Kinda like a human stereo but more awesome.

  • @57bigjoe Awesome maybe, illegal definately.

  • Stunningly lovely. Her voice is so pure and touches the heart so. I'm taken to Ireland in my mind.

  • crystal clear beautiful voice....and i love this song

  • Simply beautiful, from the crystal clear voice of Haley Westenra.

  • Magical...

  • Thank you for posting this.

    Long live Ireland

  • What a joy tolisten to her sing; what a joy to watch the video. THANK YOU!

  • If I could have just one song played at my funeral, it will be this.

  • This is a beautiful video. What an appropriate mixture of voice and song. Thank you for the video and thank you Hayley Westenra.

  • Very few people in this world are blessed with a angelic voice like Hayley! She is wonderful!

  • So beautiful !!

  • Her voice is crystalclear....Wonderful !

  • the bridge in this, WHERE IS THAT???

  • @rollercoastertreejet...... its the Egyptian bridge in either Bessbrook (outside Newry) or the viaduct at Tassagh beside Keady.......i think......

  • This is sooooo pretty. we're singing this in my school choir

  • If I could play one song at my funeral, this would be it...

  • Lovely voice. Try Eva Cassidy's version too.

  • One day, I'll see thee again, and tell thee that I love thee, and kiss thy lips, and hold thee close to my heart.

    My Danny Boy.

  • LuthienofOssirand,

From whence comes the lines you quote? I've never heard them in the song Danny Boy.

  • She looks better too!! we played this at my Fathers funeral, his name was Dan!

  • Good try, but just close to be as good as Meav of Celtic Woman. Meav is better!

  • bieto2002:

You may prefer Meav's version but Hayley's voice is better!

  • There must be a bunch of jealous CW fans around here.

  • I like them both. Meav had a nicer style of emotion, and Hayley has a sweet voice. I love their version of "Last Rose of Summer" together.

  • This song is so beautiful, I love it

  • I rather like this song by Hayley singing then by Charlotte Church

  • @colliezoya How about Harry Connick Jr in Memphis Belle?

  • I seem to have remove a post by mistake. The pictures in the video are of Ireland, not New Zealand.

  • which particular castle is that? i believe i've been there. kilarney perhaps?

  • @Sqid101 but of course they are of Ireland

  • This song never fails to bring tears to my eyes every time I hear it, and I don't think I've ever heard a more beautiful version of it :)

  • so true

  • Then you have to listen to the version of Marc-Marie Huibregts. He's a dutch comedian but he can sing very high and beautiful as well. You have to listen to his version.

  • She has an amazing voice and this is a great song!

  • This song , especially now, is healing to those who have lost love ones in this war. I love this song, and so did my cousin, God rest his soul. He was lost to us back in Afghanistan on May 1, along with 2 other US soldiers. I sang this song on his grave, like he told me to do, before he was deploid. It rained nonstop for a week, then almost instantly, the rain disappered and the sun came out. I know it was Jimmy saying thanks.

  • BTC 141, why not dedicate it to ALL men lost in Afghanistan, why the hell do we get mixed up in everybody else's mess, we do not need to kiss our loved ones goodbye and having to kiss their lifeless bodies wiating to be buried WHY?. Gordon Brown the British Prime minister said he speaks for everybody..HE DOES NOT SPEAK FOR ME. Bring the boys home and let them get on with it I Love Haley and I am in her fan club and seen her live she is a spirit among all singers. God Bless her

  • And the hapless civilians who get mixed up in it all as well? ;-)

  • I suppose that is what you meant anyway.

  • just awesome BABE.x

  • @Richpete001 Spell her name right if you love her.

  • Oh Gawd. She is singing what are the usual lyrics. There are a number of versions though, none of which are more "right" or "wrong" than any other. One early version used to have a women's name rather than "Danny Boy", for example.

  • After hearing a 1,001 renditions of this song Hayley Westenra breaths new life into this classic song. What truly beautifully haunting version of this song.

  • I dedicate this song to all the Canadian soldiers killed on the battle field in Afghanistan.

May God have mercy on your soul

  • What the heck is up with the lyrics!?!?

  • These are the standard lyrics as posted on the Internet and elsewhere... I don't know what you mean.

  • Lovely version, just the way it should be done. By the time the first verse is finished you should be bawlin your eyes out.

  • The poor old arranger never gets any credit. Danny Boy is difficult to arrange: too many altered harmonies and and counter melodies and you take away from the charm of the original tune; stick to 'plain' harmony and no added melodic figuration and nothing special is added. This version is beautifully done. Congratulations anonymous arranger.

  • i've heard this song iself too many times. or so i thought- i can't stop listening to her sing this.

  • It's music like this that makes me glad that music exists.

This is a beautiful song regardless of who sings it, but her voice just makes it purely divine.

  • She sings very well and it always touches my heart deeply when she sings this song. This recording seems to have been assembled with the greatest of care. I think the studio had a lot to do with its effect.

  • Notheing seays Erin like Hayley Westenra singing Danny boy! Erin go bragh!!! 5/5!!! For Hayley and the one who post this vid!

  • this really makes me proud to be irish. :]]

  • Ikr.

  • Her voice is enchanting. It gives me chills.

  • My most favourite version of this song, so happy Hayley did her version.

  • listened to her sing abide with me 3 days ago just overwhelmed by her voice she is AWESOME

  • You are making everybody cry. What the hell are you doin'. jUst stop it.

  • Best version I've ever heard. Period. Brilliant arrangement.

  • I love this song so much. Its one of my favorites. It almost brings me to tears.

  • Very Good - but Rose Marie is better!

  • think scarborough fairs (if you mean this by Rose Marie ;) ) is the same quality

this girl knows how to sing :)

  • If you could fall in love with a voice, I did with hers

  • where are these pics from? england or new zealand?

  • From Ireland.

  • Wooooo Ireland :D

  • This version of this song I have requested at my funeral. An angelic voice to soothe and touch the hearts of my family and friends.

Words cannot really express my feelings about this song.

  • There are different castles in the video but I saw a few pics of Blarney Castle, which is in partial ruin. I have the same pics in my camera. Gorgeous grounds!

  • my mother was born in belfast and has been back on holiday its a beautiful place i cant wait to go myself one day...

  • com' on over, 1st pic was of Custom House Square in Belfast with other pics of City Hall ,St Annes Cathedral and Queens University - its not all slums and 'Peace Walls'

  • does anyone know what castle ruins were featured about halfway through? It looks a lot like my ancestor's castle in Roscommon.

  • so beautiful!

  • Pretty voice... but she's no Eva Cassidy

  • she can't sing like Eva Cassidy. Eva Cassidy knew, that she would die, when she recorded her version

  • Is that for sure? That could have helped her put some feeling into it.

  • i read it in the text comments to Eva Cassidys version

  • I just checked and Danny Boy was recorded at Pearl's, an Annapolis nightclub, in 1994, two years before Eva's diagnosis of terminal melanoma. She had a melanoma removed in 1993 but they thought they got it all.

  • @purplebuddybird

    You need a hankie?

  • @ Ipaythursday , don't you have anything better to do than making callous comments?

This was a correction to Leirix61's post. She said that Eva knew she was dying when she recorded this.

  • @purplebuddybird

Don't you have anything better do than to do your mourning for Eva on Hayley's videos?

  • Amazing voice but this is a mans song to be sung, just my oppinion from how i heard it when i was younger.

  • You have been culturally brought up to think that this is a man's song. If you listen to the lyrics the intention is actually for a female (a mother singing to her son who is going to war) although that is the most commonly accepted interpretation many people have differing opinions.

  • Haha! And here I was thinking that it was a wife waiting for her husband to come back from the wars... I heard a version where the lyrics went 'and if you fall and all the flowers are dying...' etc. Like HE'D died, and she'd gone to visit HIS grave.

It's interesting. I love this song anywho. =D

  • What I love, that she exemplifies perfectly, is that a song can be beautiful without those played out, unnecessary riffs that everyone adds in.

Nowadays, you can't simply hear a classic song anymore, everything's riffed beyond recognition.

That's why I appreciate talents such as hers:

She's TRUE talent. And it shines more brightly than those other singers. <3

  • at myfuneral this song will be played oo beautiful:)

  • she is sooo awesome i lover her voice!!!!!

  • Hayley is beautiful in every way.

  • This makes me want to go back home to Ireland so bad...

  • im doing this for NYSSMA on level 3 and i like this arangement WAY better than the one im doing

  • Pure Gold

  • With a voice like this, you could win American Idol. No doubt!! beautiful.

  • She can go far.

  • you're right of course, however, i trust that she will never feels the need to go on that a base, gross contest

  • I though only Americans could go on that?! She never had to go on one of those shows, because she made her own way to the world stage. She is beautiful at singing. Go kiwi!

  • beautiful

  • wow

  • i heard my music teacher saying that this is about a father singing to his song but im not sure of the authenticy

  • That is a popular theory, but it is also thought that the author deliberately left it general so as to not limit the songs market. In its early history "Eli Dear" was sometimes substituted for "Danny Boy" when the song was sung by men. So we can all make what we like of it.

  • you need to get your money back from that music 'teacher', yous been ripped-off

  • She has the purest voice I've ever heard! I love her.

  • Check out the Norwegian soprano Sissel. She has an amazing voice and she is extremely talented. Her voice is crystalclear. Check out the videos of Sissel here on YouTube. She has the most angelic voice on earth.

  • The best, most pure voice since Karen Carpenter

  • Oddly enough I heard it was written for the composer/writer's gay love interest. It was taboo back then (well, moreso), and he hoped one day for it to be accepted, but knew he also knew he would never see the day. So, he loved this person but could never let anyone know. So he wanted to let him know forever through this .

I think regardless the story is beautiful and it makes me tear up every time I hear it.

  • That's interesting too. I saw a long analysis of it once somewhere, that didn't come to any firm conclusion, but pointed out - accurately enough, I think - that there were aspects of it that suggested a closer, or more romantic relationship than you'd expect from a father son relationship. Whatever, it is a very powerful evocation of the poignant anguish experienced when parting from a loved one whom one may never see again. (Gee, that should be worth at least a C+ in English 101.)

  • oh god im crying! this was my fathers favorite song and he recently died this is a beautifully haunting song that i wont forget. god no wonder he loved it so much.

  • my name my song

  • Such a pure voice -- so unfair to the rest of us !! :(

  • My nan used to sing this to me, and I thought she made it up for me. It's a cracking tune.

  • Hayley's nan(g'ma) sang this song to her when she was youngster. After Hayley finished recording Danny Boy in the studio, she called her nan and they did a duet over phone.

  • Amaseing

  • Haley is SUCH a brilliant songwriter. Every song that she writes talks and points to peace and love. She is such a spiritual person not to mention VERY VERY VERY gifted. No wonder why she is so well known

  • Well, she's only actually written a couple herself. This is an old traditional ballad.

  • i dont really think its about peace, but i suppose we all hear what we like. I always thought this was a song from a father to his son. he is sending the boy away but he must stay and fight and knows he will die. it strikes a chord with us probably because of the many uprisings in ireland. when rebels went to fight they sent their children to fosterage with a kinsman. its sad but it shows how much people sacrificed to win the freedom we take for granted.

  • That is interesting, Lucasleivia. I always thought that the son had to go away to fight but the elderly father -- near death -- had to stay. Of course your interpretation makes just as much sense as mine, it just shows how many ways these things can be interpreted. I don't think all of Hayley's songs are about peace either.

  • I myself am american, and do not know to much about the irish fight for indepandce, only sketchy details. But, this song still hits home. In whatever form, it may seem. Truly a beatiful masterpiece, preformed by an outstanding voice.

  • It is a beautiful haunting melody, but the lyrics sung here were written by an English lawyer, who had set them to a different tune. But his song was a flop and he put his lyrics to this melody known as the Londonderry Air when sent a copy by his sister-in-law. The origin of the Londonderry Air is a mystery. It may have even come from Scotland or Australian composer Percy Grainger, according to some theories. Do a Google and you'll find he many theories.

  • It's a year today that my dad died who taught me to sing this when I was 4. Me and my brother chose this version for dad's funeral as it was the only one that left us in tears as Hayley's voice is so pure. A couple of months later my poor brother tragically died in a fire which completely destroyed us. Naturally we played the same version at Billy's funeral. Today would also have been his 50th birthday.Listening to this has just left me in shreds. RIP Mum, Dad, Billy and baby Margaret.

  • Beautiful.

    Thank you.

    Love & Light, Stu.

  • this song is hundreds of years old, and now, at long last it's finally met a voice to match it beauty

  • Her voice is kryptonite, can't move...

  • that fits it perfectly

  • So a wondeful version of this song and so a voice. Thanks!!

  • I want to have Hayley next to me to say her that I love her voice so much!!! I so want to marry her voice!!!!

  • simply beautiful. very very well done

  • With when a duet Bic Runga and Hayley Westenra?

  • A good question, lezinc. hayley and Boh Runga are good friends, I believe, but I haven't heard of Hayley and Bic getting together. They are both so busy touring in different directions, that they may not meet much. I saw Bic earlier this year for the first time live and was very impressed by her.

  • I can't say anything, just tears go down.

  • gabriela6789,

I cant say this of all them. But most of those photos are of places in Ireland. I recognise them as I have been there many times. Its a beautiful country. The people are warm and friendly and will welcome all with open arms. Visit ,expeiance and enjoy. You will never want to leave.

  • They are from a web site promoting Ireland, and I believe they are all from Ireland. I'm afraid I can't which places exactly they are. Some Irish person may know and help us out some time. ;-)
