I remember being presented with this book at about 4 years old. I adored it and this little animation brings back that wonder and joy nearly forty years on- thank you.
Funny, I'd never heard of these books or the cartoon while growing up... I got the book for my little guy just a few days ago from the library, then I noticed that there are cartoons as well. Both of my kids love this now and so do I
I just love the wild imagination this kid has. I believe my generation to be the last with any sorta vivid expression. Kids nowadays only want violence and sex, it's in their video games and even their TV shows.
Omg! I love Harold and the Purple Crayon! No one I know remembers it! Unbelieveable... Glad u have an ORIGINAL episode! Thanks for letting me not look so crazy for "imagining" this book/cartoon :o)
I can imagine people watching this and believing if they carry a purple crayon with them everywhere in life, they can get themselves into and out of trouble with little to no problem.
OH MY GOD HAROLD YOU LEARNED SO MANY VALUABLE LESSONS BUT PLEASE TRY TO BE CAUTIOUS IN LIFE YOU MIGHT NOT ALWAYS BE SO LUCKY BUT I HOPE THE BEST FOR YOU LITTLE GUY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rife with symbolism!? Hardly... its a children's story- interpretation is left in the eye of the beholder. AND, Harold has this lil invisible helper called white-male privilege. I think we create our own 'reality'... destiny by definition is out of our control.
Besides... purple is the color of sexual frustration...
Destiny, by definition, is a relative and theoretical concept. The more accurate view is simply the law of cause and effect; that all actions and events in one's future are resultant of their present and past thoughts/actions. It is a very logical principle, and probably best explained in buddhist teachings.
Am i dirty minded? or is there a whole other sub-rosa narrative going on here centering on harold's big-purple-cock** cough* cough** ahem, i mean, his crayon
Of course it's full of symbolism - a male child drawing his own personal mythscape is bound to be. Interestingly, he never drew a weapon of any kind, but then everything in the mythscape is inanimate, and his hands were full of, er, purple crayon.
I don't know what the symbolism was, other than the apple tree, but it did remind me of a nice swedish cartoon i used to watch called alfons aberg. :)

"Purple is the color of sexual frustration?" You need to get a life. That is one of the most ignorant things I have ever heard!
