  • I think he using an eastern forehand grip

  • what grip is he using?

  • only thing i dont like is his forehand !!!

  • his volleys are so clean

  • people if your coaches have told you to step in with your left foot on forehand and right foot on backhand on volleys they are wrong look at everyone like delpo to even the best volleyers like the bryan bros they do not do that i am disapointed in the coaching industrie for making us figure this out on our own.when you have time sure but when you get older no the balls will be coming much faster and youll end up being killed by hard hitters.i rest my case.

  • @dantheamazingful everythings different in a game situation. what coaches tell you to do is not what they expect you to replicate in a game situation. they tell you to do things in practice such that the right technique will transfer into your game.

  • he was only 20 years old than....great tallent but he has problems with injuries :(

  • Very nice video! :-)

  • 0:54 Really? You mean to tell me the short guy with long hair and a 1h backhand ISN'T Del Potro? Mind. Blown.

  • He's so hot

  • 0:59 "if i become a professional ill get everything for free, and travel around the world" then i think some one says noo

  • Such simple form anyone could copy it if they wanted 2 but simple is always better

  • at 3:57 gasquet is waiting to hit

  • Whoa Del Potro has such a unique load up for his forehand... i love it

  • @xXxWontonxXx i do the same thing on my fh, i basically have the same fh and serve motion as del po, because thats the way that my coach taught me how to hit it. it works trust me.. :))

  • @3:36 loudspeaker says "Roger Federer to Serve"

  • im 5ft 10 is it good for Tennis?

  • el mejor drive del mundo

  • great and smokin too ;)

  • Great vid. Delpo is a real favourite of mine ever since he destoryed Nadal in semis of USO last year, i was stunned by it. Cant believe hes slipped to 259 in the world, itll be facinating watching him make the climb back up. 2011 should be epic.

  • @readmystupidcomments

hey man, just doing what you're telling me to do

and i'm still reading your stupid comments

  • @readmystupidcomments

    i'm reading your stupid comments

  • Lol at 59sec u hear a kid in the background saying he wanna be a pro. Its just amazing to think if he were to follow that he might be the next number , and all inspired watching a pro as a kid.

  • one of the best ball strikers

  • @MrChilla43 Neither do I.Watch my comment above.

  • thumbs up if you agree that he's a good player but has very ugly forehands.

  • @locyka19 yeah right, it's very simple and he doesn't need superb technique like the shorter guys, he can hit nice and flat at a downward angle, one of best forehands in tennis, not just because of power.

  • @cj397 agreed, its also the fact he has great reach so when pushed out wide he can still "slap" the forehand back with so much weight that its almost impossible to get back. his backhand is the safe shot and his serve is very good. And even for 6 foot +++ he has good movement. and mental strenght so a great player in the making and shame about his wrist injury. I dont think he has the all round game with volleying and slice to challenge on grass but the other courts defo!

  • @pathfinder157 good point of view, and remember, he's only what, 21, 22 still? he's got so much time to improve, hopefully in 2011 he'll be a new force to deal with

  • has his form changed since when he first became pro?

  • Queremos volver a verte asi, Pendejo....

  • Del Potro's coach used to be Gaston Gaudio's coach, Franco Davin, if I'm not mistaken.

  • does he use an eastern forehand grip? looks like it.

  • @EdmenTWS Most likely, but I've heard rumours that it maybe something between eastern and semi-western, who knows ;]

  • @captainniki thanks for the info! cause i use an eastern, so im trying to find more who use it so that i dont feel so left out :P

  • @EdmenTWS Glad I could help :) I use kinda eastern also, more likely something in between (like Delpo or Federer). I'm not as tall as 6' 6" giant Juan here but I find it to be a very comfortable grip - it gives you greater margin of error than the original eastern but you can handle low balls much easier than the semi-western ;p

  • So this is how you destroy your wrist.

  • hi plays good!

  • 1:51 hahaha

  • del po is so tall, his racket looks like a toy

  • lol right when you put US Open Champion you get 100k+ views hahah :)

  • i lovr watching him hit

  • That forehand looks so insainly forced. Me no like!!1

  • Listen at the 1:00 a litle guysaying to his father: "when i'll become professional i'll get anything free and travel around the world?" and his father says : "Yes"

    hehehehehehe

  • @anasamati hahahaha :D funny ;)

  • tennis looks easy with Del Potro :)

  • Del Potro has an explosive forehand...

  • Gosh darnit Delpo your wrist needs to heal faster!

  • His forehand is huge! Hmmm he can afford to go eastern cause his tall, he doesn't need to compensate and make safer shots like ferrer and verdasco who plays more spin . For del porto, high balls are his hitting zone. God i wish i was tall !

  • @patrickstar2241height has its disadvantages as well. im like almost 6'3 and i have great difficulty in bending, turning around in time to change direction and im not that fast either...thats something the smaller guys dont struggle with..must be even tougher for del potro cuz he,s like 6'6!

  • @hashamkhan16 true .Very true. Thats why the very consistent players are those in the middles. Like nadal and roger who i feel are just nice . They have the height but still the movement.

  • Yooo at like 0:19, you can see that he hits the ball mad hard. Either dust or chalk gets blasted off the ball o_o;;

  • It looks like a lot of the big forehands these days come from eastern grips. But it seems hard to be consistent with it.

  • what I love about his groundstrokes is that he puts so much of his body into and there's so much waste rotation and he creates a lot of momentum going into his shots.

    he absolutely CLOBBERS the ball.

  • fuck them hard, juan!

  • fucking damn wrist injury, its holding him back currently in 2010. :(

  • Brilliant hitting. These guys mean business, even on the practise courts. Juan looks a lot more "intimidating" when he wears his head bands. Sorta like pre-2009 Nadal with the tank tops without the sleeves.

  • 0:52

I like how the tag pops up to lets us know that they guy in blue with the mullet is not Del Potro. XD

  • he makes it all look so easy...

  • EXCELLENT VIDEO!!!! DELPO!!!!

  • the forehand preparation looks dodgy

but hey...as long as it works for him i guess it ok

  • its not dodgy IMO cauz its effective. generates alot of precision and power at the same time.

  • mediocre? u think u know how hard is to be 1000 in the atp? its crazy man, and yeah his hitting partner is franco davin , his coach.

  • Tyruk, DelPo isn't Spanish, he's Argentinian.

His hitting partner doesn't have a gr8 backhand but his forehand is reasonably mediocre.

  • @APH1991 mediocre means bad...

  • Isn't that his coach he's hitting with?

  • Hermoso

  • I think Juan Martin uses an eastern forehand grip, which should help him when transitioning to the net. These Spanish players with their extreme western grips have awkward forehand volley grips. This guy should not have that problem. He's going to be unbeatable on hard courts within 24 months.

  • 1:09 was the best drop shot I've ever seen, talk about perfect placing and that's right where it needs to be lol.

  • i know he's got some grandslams in his future, but he's so boring to watch. He just stomps all over the court... yeesh.

  • Del Potro might be the next Lendl or Wilander of tennis - 7-8 GS titles in his pocket but no Wimbledons. It's gonna be fun to watch him play in Grand Slams in the future - especially at the Frech and US Opens

  • it looks to me like the next generation of great tennis players may be tall.

  • Seems like he uses a fair amount of his wrist for most of those forehand shots.

  • his forehand is fucking awesome

  • Just saying, look like it hurts hehe.

  • I love how he attacks the ball early - it lets him have the most awesome finish

  • i think there's more to come in this fellow, he's showing all the signs of becoming a world no.1. all but 1 of the 12 teenagers to win 4 or more titles in a season went on to become a world no.1. all but 1 of the open era US open champions went on to become a world no.1... so we're talking a very slim chance here that he is NOT going to be a world no.1.. and even better, i still thinks theres more room for improvement, his form isnt as refined as federer's yet... by the time it is, we shall see

  • i think delpo will be no.1 but he wont be winning many slow court tournaments

  • on the contrary, i think he is a formidable clay court player... his first title came on a clay court, and he was arguably the second best player in the french open this year, he practically out played federer in the first 3 sets, performance wise, i think he played better in roland garros this year than in the US... just that federer played worse in the US than he did in the french

  • whether he goes on to be number one or not he still has my respect

  • thanks for sharing the facts ( didnt know them), they are very interesting. By the way...who was the teen to win 4 or more titles and not make it to no 1?

  • Jimmy Arias, career high was no.5

  • The hardest hit forehands in tennis history belong to Juan Martin del Potro and Fernando Gonzales. But Roger Federer has the most aesthetically pleasant the most elegant the most effective (percentage wise) forehand in all history. Federer The Undisputed Greatest of All Time!
  • Are you sure of what you're saying ?? lol

  • I am not sure if you can win play tennis

  • what do yu mean?

i really do not know what do you mean!!!

are you sure of what you are saying now?

  • my bad on my last comment i ment to say 1:30 ''Thats it ur FIRED

  • lol at 1:33 what if he was like ''Thats it ur FIRED''

  • Is that Franco Davin that he is hitting with?

  • 1:10 was pure awesomeness

  • What a specimen. If you weren't a fan of del Potro after his dominant streak last summer, you should be now. What really tickles me is all the talk that if there was going to be one player to break the Federer/Nadal stranglehold on major titles (with the one exception of Djokovic), it was going to Andy Murray. Ha! Anyone with eyes to see knew it was giong to be this guy, not mopey Murray.

  • his way too tall, it's cheating, there should be a height restriction or a different league for tall player imo!

  • that my dear friend is called DISCRIMINATION!

  • no my dear watson, it's called an UNFAIR ADVANTAGE!!#@,/\+-!"£$^&&*)

  • damn you are 1 funny boy.

  • Comment removed

  • vamos delpo! vamos juarez!vamos tandil!

  • i have always liked him because hes from argentina.

but hes suprisingly great. powerful and efficient.

    congrats :)

  • jack knife on 1:50

  • Good player on the rise. He played a good match against Federer, and Federer uncharacteristically became unnerved.

Federer can't be untouchable forever. Congrats to Del Petro.

  • 110 MPH forehand + height and reach = dominant player for as long as his knees will hold out.

  • an upset because of a not-so-good day for the fed and a great day for the big guy potro!

    congrats..=)

but im stil a fan of the GREAT FED!!=)

  • Del Potro recently winner of the US Open will be the next number 1 in the world. Hes only 20 years old.

    Greetings From Argentina

    Vamos Delpo carajo!

  • I wouldve never guessed federer would have lost.

  • OMFG hes a BEAST :) Greetings from Argentina.

  • I can't believe he's only 20...he looks like he's 27

  • Juan Martin del Potro wins the 2009 U.S. Open in a 5-set match against Roger Federer.

  • this guy will be no.3 next year

  • his abilitty, on the backhand, to get low through his footwork and knee bend, for someone 6'6 his really quite remarkable. Moreover, the way he leans in on that backhand is beautiful.....

Del Po, IMO, will become the most powerful player in tennis, especially on the wings, allowing him to become the best hard court player in tennis. He will be a major threat for grand slam titles at Australia and U.S. Open for the next 6-8 years (barring health concerns)

  • should have took shirt off

  • haha I loved the way you described his monstrous forehand. A+

  • little hitch, but amazing torque and racquet head speed he can create with the long arms

  • i would kill to have his forehand and serve lol

  • Del Potro moves so well for being 6'6''. It's fantastic.

  • I really liked his actual volley technique in these videos, although some more knee bend would be nice to get down to some of those.

  • Del Potro is a monster of a player!!. He hits the ball the most flat and hardest than any player i've seen. If he improves more he coan challenge for grand slams

  • no, soderling hits the flatest and hardest

  • lol do you hear the kid in the background?

"if i become a professional. I'll get everything free... travel around the world"

I liked him better when he had long hair. I started hating him when he cut it, i don't know why?

  • Hoyoung, your comment demonstrates the lack of understanding you have of tennis; Del Potro´s forehand is technically perfect. He even has more credit taking into account that he´s definetely taller than most of the players in the tour, and those who tend to be as tall as Juan Martín usually only have the serve as a trustworthy weapon...I think Nadal didn´t like Del Potro´s forehand either yesterday ja

  • i think its because his wrist is so aligned to his arm and that his arm is also straight

  • well theres some1 who replies nicely

  • You hate him? wow, Del Potro meaby cant sleep because a looser player as you hate him... Forehand ugly? wow, the looser thinks that the last us champion won against the best player of all times with a ugly forehand...

  • i think he is great, i think he will be in the top three for sure in a year or so, or probably longer than that but at some point, his groundstrokes are monstrous.

  • he's a beaast! with an amazing technique

  • he's huge

  • He should try to bend his knees a little more on his volleys despite his height.

  • you're telling a millionaire professional tennis player how to improve his game?

  • Yeah, just bacause he's a pro doesn't mean he makes no mistakes.

  • This was filmed before or after Del Potro defeated Nadal?

  • before, way before...del potro defeated Nadal in Miami, not in IW

  • Oh yeah.. I forgot.. thanks :)

  • guys,i want to know what is eastern and western grip??what do you mean, cause i'm playing tennis 5 years and never told me about these thing...

    thnx!

  • 1:09 amazing drop shot!

  • Comment removed

  • ugly forehand but a good one

  • Comment removed

  • lol... such a ugly stroke, but powerful nonetheless~ sigh

  • i think it is semi eastern

  • whats his fh grip? eastern?

  • In this video, he is using an eastern grip. From 2007-2009, Del Potro has made a slow but steady transition from western (07 wimbledon) to semi-western (08 us open) to eastern (09 australian open). The change helps him with low balls, and lets him use his reach more effectively from the baseline.

I hadn't noticed until watching this video that Del Potro has very solid volleys, but judging from the attempt at 3:21 it seems that he struggles with forward movement on the court.

  • is the eastern grip same as the continental grip?

  • look, I DONT LIKE THE WAY HE MOVES HIS ARM, OK? is not "natural" for me.

But i cant deny that is very powerful and effective.

  • thats one of the most powerful forehands in atp, it doesnt matter the way he hits, in my opinion Nadal´s forehand is the most horrible ive ever seen, but damn is effective.

  • You have to learn to read, i said "IT DOESNT MATTER THE WAY HE HITS", and "I DON LIKE NADAL´S FOREHAND BUT DAMN, IS EFFECTIVE"

  • i saw del porto playing last year and he hit the forehand in a completely different style.....i guess his forehand is much steadier then it was and this change helped him to reach the top ten

  • you're right. it's a lot more steadier now.

  • this guys gonna be really strong on the tour once he gets his mind right, 6 foot 6 and already a huge power game

  • His wind up is so weird...

  • The Racket doesn't care what you do with it until the contact point. How you get there is up to your individual style.

  • ugly forehand.

  • it may be a bit ugly but it is one of the best on tour

  • ugly? is one of the most powerfull forehand this days

  • Looks more "strong eastern" to me than Semi-W but the heck do I know. You are probably right.

  • FYB, these are some great videos, as always. you need to go to monte carlo and film some on the red clay. i wish i were there. fortunately they are showing it in latin america.

  • ya monte carlo would be awesome... unfortunately we're not going to make it =(

  • man, this guy is good,

  • I talked to a coach today and he gave me an interesting bit of information. He said that the reason why coaches love to start thier juniors on the Western grip is becasue it generates so much topspin that it helps keep the ball in the court and makes taking lessons more enjoyable for the kids. This keeps students from dropping out thereby genrating more revenue. I thought that was a very interesting perspective.

  • hmm, i never thought of it this way. That is so bad for the sport through. If coaches taught the federer forehand (eastern grip, and full extension at the elbow), from the start, then the quality of tennis we'd be seeing would be levels above what it is now.

  • agreed, btw fed doesn't use a full eastern but a modified eastern grip

  • i dont think that would work because not many people would be able to do the federer forehand even after extensive coaching since his timing and precision has to be so perfect

  • It hasn't much to do with coaching. I play tennis a lot, but not at any professional level due to lack of time for practice. Recently, I have been doing nothing but the federer forehand. If I don't play for 5+ days, my timing goes to hell and I feel like I am mishitting every 6 of 7 balls. When I try to hit with a slightly bent elbow, its only 4 of 7 ;)

However, when I hit for 2 hours every day, my extended fed fh is unbelievable compared to anything else. I don't have extensive coaching...

  • yeah so people can get better results without as much practice!

  • Sure, but its a sarifice. You play with worser-easier technique...to get to top 100 faster but stop before the top (unless people with correct technique get injuries or sick) ...or, u spend a bit more time, and get to top 10 and stay there with relative ease

  • It is like the ancient saying: I can give you a fish and feed you for the day, but i can teach you to fish and feed you for a lifetime. (though, you may be hungry today...but not for long!)

  • learning to hit a semi western forehand would be learning how to catch fish but faster and easier

  • I am talking about the full extension on the forehand. Nadal does it with a western grip, so it's not about the grip. Gripwise, i can apply as much topspin on a ball with any grip i chose (except continental...since your wrist isn't very good in that direction) Except, eastern grip lets you flatten it out because your wrist bends in that direction (through the ball)...but western is harder to snap through with your wrist as the way your hand ends parallel to ur palm is only half of perpendiculr

  • ...It just takes practice. Practicing something that is wrong, will not get you doing something right. The right way can be difficult at first, but gives you much greater reward in the end. Just look at verdasco, fed, nadal, and now almost DelPotro - that is what happens when you keep practicing. They are able to hit really hard, and very accurately, with a very fluid motion.
