  • lol

  • they need to go to this style. this is actually how showstyle drumlines play their drums. not all but some do play this way

  • @FromTheDeskOfJAW rick rodriguez?

  • He sounds like he has a cold.

  • Second snare from the left is my drumline instructor. :)

  • that man should stop speaking out of his nose.

  • THE BEST BD DRUMLINE EVER PERIOD. Literally the first clip of drum corps I ever saw during band camp my freshman yr in HS. Took me until 92 to make it there.

  • agree!!! this was the first dci show I ever saw!! made me want to be a Blue Devil.......which I finally became in 1989-1990.

This is my fav show of all time!!

  • This drumline STILL tops most that have come since. No frills. No dancing. Straight to it!!

  • yeah they manage to edit out most of the goodies :( thanks for posting this!!!!

  • I was lucky enough to be at Camp Randall Stadium for that show. It was amazing! A BD snare scored a perfect 100.0 at individual competition. I was in a Class A corps that year and will never forget the experience: both of performing and seeing shows like this one.

  • That perfect snare solo was Steve Campbell, center snare!!

  • @guitaristsd Yep....Steve Campbell (center snare in 86). I marched with him in 84 when we were both rookies to BD (me to the activity as a whole, he came from 27th). Quiet guy...until he got a pair of drumsticks in his hands...then the rods spoke volumes for him. His solo is on YouTube if you search for it. Video and audio quality isn't the greatest (but it WAS 1986), but you can see the greatness that was Steve.

  • "deadly performers in a championship" - I love that.

  • i heard him say the name but i couldn't quite make it out. little help please?

  • this is the little things I wish they would have included in the legacy collection. all the extra comments would be cool!!

  • Oakland Crusaders were better

  • I didn't even know Oakland had a corp, let alone back then.

  • not then, the 1977-78 Etobicoke Oakies

  • HAHAH THEY LIKE ROBOTS!

  • at :16 thats called the spider it looks better if you see all ten snares doing it

  • Ain't nothin' like the good ole days

  • What a show to see live!!! I actually never saw them up close until 1987 at Glenwood Springs. Do you still have the tape?

  • Being a SoCal kid I was lucky enough to see this show live twice. I'll never forget standing in front of them in the lot and encore. Had no real idea what I was watching but I knew I wanted to do it. Funny: at everydays w/Cadets somebody (gotta love those Canadians) had the field tape from '86 Drums Along the Rockies. oops, I just peed a little thinkin about it... HA!

  • Hey Chutdigdut,

I'm an old schooler, I agree that the folks today work just as hard, and maybe even more talented. I think the problem is for most old schoolers that the emphasis has turned more toward the visual aspect, and the music has paid the price for it. When I think of today's drum corps, I think of 1 note, and 7 counts of rest, 2 notes and 7 counts of rest, while running around like ants. Who remembers La Fiesta? How about that 1985 show? Or my year, 1988. That was vintage BD music.

  • I completly agree. shows from back in the day were much more musically demanding than today's shows. and today's shows are much more visually demanding. However, the activity is still just as amazing as it was back in the day. not any worse. that's the point that i'm trying to make

  • I totally understand the point you are trying to make. However, it seems that the new era of drum corps is so "fast food", and it seems that the activity is forcing change when it should happen naturally. Honestly, the fact that there are no drum solos definately makes the shows more boring. Actually, the drumlines seem to be playing harder stuff than in the past. My point is that DCI should demonstrate demand in the music to compliment a good visual show. Just a thought:-)

  • ha. definately. sooner or later, a corp will pull that off again :-)

  • Breadloaf1: Today's drumlines are not playing harder material. As an example, despite having exceptional players, BD has had some really tame snare parts for their solo's for a long time. As for the visual nature of the Corps, that has been a very gratifying improvement. Unfortunately, the camera are often too close to the field.

  • Good point. Come to think of it, last year's six-stroke drum solo that BD did was not too demanding, although I think that BD is still playing more demand than other corps.

  • I remember La Fiesta....'course I was IN the corps in 84!!

I don't entirely agree that modern lines are playing easier stuff than in the 80s....kevlar heads made even technically simpler passages a bit harder to clean. You could almost fuzz a group attack on mylar....not so on kevlar.

  • Kevlar heads also made flam passages difficult to play due to the high level of rebound demanding more grip strength to keep grace notes at half inch heights... subsequently good flam playing has dissapeared from DCI... even bluecoats 2009 played their flam exercise with near 5 inch grace note heights... disgusting in my opinion... even if it is clean.

  • This is the corps that got me hooked on DCI. As a few have already mentioned, I believe it will never be this good again. I think the period from the early 80's to the mid 90's was the best.

  • I'm cosigning w/arctic. It's something about the corps from 80's - mid 90s that the present corps are missing. I also agree w/the visuals from '86! LOL

  • this drumline made me want to become a Blue Devil!!!!!!!

  • That visual kinda mind fucked me.

  • lol

  • you'll never ever see that again in the current CRAP of corps

  • I agree with you completely. The newer styles seem somewhat "robotic", and there are no drum solos. I marched in the 1988 Blue Devils Drumline (cymbals), and I was fortunate enough to march with some of the guys you see in this video. Anyways, there are still some good drum corps shows being performed. I guess we will just savor those good shows, and hope for more in the future!!!

  • wont happen my friend. If anything, you will see more of "amps" "vocals", and whatever other junk they can think of. I marched Bridgemen 72 and Muchachos 74-75. IMO, drum corps stopped for me in 1990. Although I enjoyed 3 corps in 2003, I cringe whenever, I watch corps anymore. It sucks...pure and simple.

  • oh, come on guys. There definately was some great stuff going on back in the day. I completly agree with that, but present drum corps don't completly suck! Just as much work (if not more work) is put into today's show's as the shows from back in the day, and the outcome is still amazing for the present corps! very insulting comments for those of us marching the present corps!

  • Dude, good points, and I think that you guys are very talented indeed. However, I wish I could take some of you young ones in a time machine to watch some of the great performances of the past like the 1987 Vanguard. UNBELIEVABLE energy in a show, and the intensity was like I have never seen since.

  • I totally agree. I loved scv 87, and scv 89 is my favorite show in the history of dci. I'm just trying to say that today's corps aren't complete crap. The activity is just as amazing as it's allways been

  • Chut: Phantom should have won in 89; although, SCV 89 was fantastic! I'm moving to Denver and I hope that I run into Ralph.

  • I know this comment is a year old, but just ignore Japs....he was saying the same stupid shit on the BD boards until he finally left...I don't think anyone misses him. God Himself could play in a modern corps and he'd still bitch, piss, and moan.

  • @japs52 then don't watch, assclown

  • When was the last time BD fielded a Cymbal Line? Also, was 86 the year they performed Channel One Suite from Buddy Rich?

  • 1988 was BD's last "true" marching cymbal line, altough they pulled some guys from the hornline in 1989 to march cymbals for the drum solo. I guess that makes me a part of history marching in the 88 cymbal line:-) And, "yes", 86 was the year they did Channel One Suite.

  • One of the best executed and mind blowing drum visual ever!!! DEVILS ROCK!!

  • good marching, good visual, SPECTACULAR drumline!

  • As a teen, that was the year that really made me a fan of the Blue Devils! Great post! I also liked '85.

  • Kewl :)

  • :-)
