I think pretty much everything written by the smiths is amazing and every single person who does a cover of it is going to bring something new and beautiful to an already stunning song... and this is no exception :) I have to say, it is possibly the only cover that I prefer to the original. Possibly.
To my beautiful Charlie....there's not a moment that passes that don't miss you, and everything thing we shared...the most amazing thing that ever happened to me, you were and always will be my soulmate. xx
@kimburruss yeh its so sad. It was a freak accident. He was last seen swimming and he went missing. and they found him i think a day later. He had drown. Apparently not a suicide. wikipedia it. will tell you in detail x
@MrPonolicious he never said he didn't like Buckley's version, just that it wasn't better than The Smiths'. And i have to agree...Jeffy does a beautiful cover, but Moz wrote it and the song will always be his, literally and emotionally.
@MrPonolicious These are Morrissey's words, and he sings them better because they were written about HIM by HIM. Jeff is great and I love him, but Morrissey does these lyrics real justice.
@Mrscuntbucket Have to agree. While I certainly like and respect the Smiths, Jeff Buckley never, never, never is second best. He's eternal in his perfection.
Music and the industry started to fall into a tailspin when Jeff Buckley passed away and if it recovers I will be amazed! Jeff was the beginning of a whole different direction in music and believe me he would of had alot of desciples.
"It takes strength to be gentle and kind, over over over over. It so easy to laugh, it's so hate. It takes guts to be gentle and kind, over over... Love is natural and real, but not for such as you and I.... Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head!" - best lines in the song. <3
my fav part is beginning with "mother..." at 5:25 and I feel some indescribable emotions which makes me think he was already out of this world, but the whole song is wonderful.
Jeff Buckley puts more pain into his version than the smiths. If you listen to the the smiths version it just seems lighter. Jeff has a way of making you feel his voice.
@Allisonc79 The smiths version seems lighter because of Johnny Marrs guitaring. If you listen to Morrisey, he sings so melancholy. That teamed up with Marrs guitaring is what made the smiths great.
Don't be fooled every musician wants to be recognized, valedated and if fame comes along ok, but I agree that was not his top priority and when it came he enjoyed it at first but then it became a little to much of a pressure cooker that's why he left to go to Memphis. He wanted to be able to reconnect with what really made him happy and gave him the freedom he worked so hard to acquire.
@MyLifeBeforeYou go away?! he just didn't want to be too famous if at all, duh, he was too great for it. and a beautiful soul and odd mood changing person, that doesn't make him not want nicew respectful appriciative fans like he said and implied many times " do anything you want with it" derr :) enjoy the music
@AlternativeAbyss I don't criticize him for do it, I just miss him, and I would like enjoy his music for a long long time... He is an inspiration to me, and his death makes me be sad sometimes.
I'd give anything, to go back fourteen years ago and tell him how much he did for all of us. Heaven must be precious with such a beautiful angel. Love you, miss you.
This is entirely too serene to be interesting. There's a degree of pain to the original that Jeff Buckley cannot come near touching. I guess I shall be sticking to the original from now on.
Pretty nice, but listening to the original by The Smiths makes it clear The Smiths version is superior. I do like Buckley's version, but Morrissey has a more sincere sounding pain to his voice.
The real beauty of Jeff Buckley is that not only would he cover a song he really liked but he sang it in such a way that no one from anywhere at any time in the history of music could better him. He always sang songs with so much conviction..ya know and truth in his voice. To be honest when I heard he died I had been into him since 94' and literally couldn't believe it.
I think both versions (smiths and jeff) are gorgeus; the difference is between the interpretations; morrisey sang it with resignation and awareness; instead buckley sang it with desolation, as he can't understand how "it's over", and why "oh mother, I can feel, the sole is falling over my head" at 5:52; when I heard that sentence sang from jeff, I cried. maybe because I can understand the feeling of this song...
No, Jeff - it's not over. It never will be. With the gems you left behind for us to enjoy forever. It never will be over. Hope you are having a happy birthday with the rest of the angels. RIP.
Booooooo, not that he is bad, he is not ... BUT, come on, boooooo. Morrissey, is still very much alive and cannot be compared. I would like to hear who Jeff Buckley thinks does a better job. BOOOOOOOOOOO!
How should The Smiths and Morrissey be done? BY A DEVOTEE who was really a disciple! JB was both, even through a career of unforgettable originality, offering homage at the altar.
Cover versions of Morrissey songs are so very hit and miss. But THIS... It doesn't just hit the nail on the head, it drives it right through the wall.
Jeff's so unbelievable to me, his voice sounds so mature, vulnerable, haunting, warm and what longing a longing to make sense of life when it's an everyday search for that. Now that's what I take away from listening to Jeff Buckley sing. He sings his own autobiography!
@LeClarkRidesAgain I think we all agree that it is an amazing piece of music and has great lyrics and I think one of the most memorable lines in it is "It's so easy to laugh it's so easy to hate it takes strength to be gentle and kind." You comment and those responding to it were hateful. Isn't it a little hypocritical to say it's an amazing piece of music and then make those comments? Just food for thought....
@LeClarkRidesAgain The Smiths wouldn't want a fan like you, you know. Morrissey and Marr would disown you for saying something so fucking hateful. You think you're defending their music? All they would feel is disgust for you.
@CrownedWithLaurels Not to mention that Morrissey put Jeff Buckley's "Grace" on his list of top 13 albums, which is especially great since Jeff loved Morrissey and the Smiths. I love both versions, actually.
@resiliencetag He actually used to mix both songs when he played live. It's pretty cool you can listen to it on Youtube. However, I think both covers stand better on their own.
Love the original...love this version! Can't say which I like better...each seems to be so different, it wouldn't even be right to like one better than the other.
Anyone who thinks this version is better than The Smiths is wrong. Buckley is a great singer and probably does a better version of hallejulah than Leonard Cohen but he is no where near Morrissey's emotional performance here.
@Macfraser75 Its a great cover, but Buckley is a high tenor, so that low resonance in The Smiths version is gone. It gives it a new meaning. Jeff makes it a lullaby where Morrissey made you feel a gut wrenching ache.
@garvie Not a normal kid haha! For some reason that cracks me up. I don't if there is such a thing as a normal person, but I totally understand what you're saying. I would say at least 90% of people from ages 10-25 have never even heard of Jeff Buckley, and if they have, then it was only because of Hallelujah (and no other songs).
@ericlord821 yeah, I used to try and get my friends into listening to him, but I didn't realize at the time that most 11 year olds are not mature enough or have the attention span for Jeff lol. I find now that many of the people I tried to show him to, now find him amazing. And by normal kid, I mean, listens to music that appeals to younger generations, i was listening to jazz, radiohead and jeff while my friends were listening to nickelback.
i have warmed a bit to Jeff buckley recently but i stand by it.its not a patch on Morrissey,i think the only people who would disagree are Buckley fans
we are all really sad that your gone brother, i feel a connection to you and your music and your words and the way you choose to say them. i dont cry at funerals but just the fact of how real you are brings a tear to my eye to think that when i start creating life in music you wont be here to give me a goodjob or even to meet me.*sigh
Probably the most acerbic and saddest song about the human condition ever written ever! .. this is why Morrissey/Marr were the greatest songwriting partnership ever period!
I've never understood why people find drug addicts to be role models. Janice Joplin, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix. It's one thing to idolize their music, and I appreciate it myself, but I can't find a role model in any of them. Jeff Buckley, however, I can. He created beautiful, passionate music, and controlled his life. He's an artist I do find inspiring, not ones who use their arms like pincushions.
people look up to them for their own reasons, but i think its mostly because those artists were able to express something thats hard to articulate. like, kurt cobain wasn't a genius--just a guy with a guitar and something to say. but when i listen to his music, i feel like he gets me. same with jeff buckley. being able to make that sort of connection is something i think all great artists share regardless of their lifestyle.
@marikiki17 He took drugs too... But weren't addict. Anyway, Jeff Buckley's the best, and I agree with you : he's the only one to be a role model for me, for us all.
This is a great version of the song but The Smiths saved my life and for that I will always prefer that version but Buckley is a genius in his own right.
im 14 year old girl, and im ashamed to say ive only just discovered, the genius that is jeff buckley. nowadays most popular music is just comercial rubbish, and truly beautiful music like this is never celebrated. it needs to be beacuse this is sooo beautiful. r.i.p jeff buckley. thank you.
@smileychoclate awww i remember getting into Jeff Buckley when i was your age too, im 21 now and despite everything i listen to (a LOT of different music) I always look forward to curling up in bed with his records. Hes truely one of a kind.
exactly! who could be mad at a show bringing u here? theres so much music out there (and pure crap) its hard to know all the good ones if no on ever lets u listen to the song. think about it, how did u first learn of this song? how else does good music get around? just cuz we didn't hear it on the radio when it first came out doesn't make us any less than u. and i love the dance that went with it, makes me want to cry
anybody notice how much this sounds like his version of hallelujah?

we are all really sad that your gone brother, i feel a connection to you and your music and your words and the way you choose to say them. i dont cry at funerals but just the fact of how real you are brings a tear to my eye to think that when i start creating life in music you wont be here to give me a goodjob or even to meet me.*sigh
oh that was so real

Good, but not the Smiths.

@udooling No one will ever sound or be like Morrissey. Buckley put his own twist on the song which I like. He wasn't trying to sound the The Smiths

@alinalove777 I like the cover, but I don't think I will listen to this cover more than once.

@marikiki17
people look up to them for their own reasons, but i think its mostly because those artists were able to express something thats hard to articulate. like, kurt cobain wasn't a genius--just a guy with a guitar and something to say. but when i listen to his music, i feel like he gets me. same with jeff buckley. being able to make that sort of connection is something i think all great artists share regardless of their lifestyle.

@marikiki17 He took drugs too... But weren't addict. Anyway, Jeff Buckley's the best, and I agree with you : he's the only one to be a role model for me, for us all.

This is a great version of the song but The Smiths saved my life and for that I will always prefer that version but Buckley is a genius in his own right.

exactly! who could be mad at a show bringing u here? theres so much music out there (and pure crap) its hard to know all the good ones if no on ever lets u listen to the song. think about it, how did u first learn of this song? how else does good music get around? just cuz we didn't hear it on the radio when it first came out doesn't make us any less than u. and i love the dance that went with it, makes me want to cry
