If it hasn't already been mentioned, this song is about the biblical book of Job, which tries to to explain the problem of evil and suffering in the world. "To settle a bet that could not be won between a prideful father and his son"... it's all about the bet that God makes with Devil to test the faith of humanity. Lost of philosophers have a massive problem with the book of Job.
@KinkyZebra911 Christianity is a faith that has been corrupted by it's leaders almost immediately after it was founded. When it was adopted by the Roman Empire, they mixed aspects of paganism into it, and from their many tried to remain faithful, but there is a reason there are so many versions that all think they are right, it's because it's so twisted there is no way to know what is stolen from my faith, what is made up, and what was actually written. Don't know the bands stance
this song helped me through my 6 month service in my country's defence forces. it was over -30c, coldest winter for a long time, we had shooting and group attack practises the whole day and as we finally got to our tent to sleep,i put my headphones on and listened to this, i ended up doing it every night.
I disagree with you TOO. I think you're mistaken TOO. I'm just posting my comment instead of replying to you directly TOO. I'd be interested in civil discourse TOO. This is actually meant to offend you. I bet you're gonna block me too. Blocking someone who oldisagrees with you even after they apologize for offending you, now that is juvenile TOO. please do block me so I never make the again mistake of wasting my time on you.
Can you offer any examples of songs or specific lyrics supporting or suggesting the idea of a religious or even deistic worldview or life-stance? Btw, sorry about my snarky comments in my initial response. I usually try to avoid the militant atheist as well as the asshole punker approach,as bitter arguments get us nowhere, but I slip quite often. If I'm slow to respond, attribute it to my school workload, not success in your argument ;-)
@HandiCripple666 Why are you just posting your comment instead of posting it in reply to mine? I know why, it's because you were hoping I wouldn't see it and respond to it; therefore, making you feel as if you won the argument. Whatever dude, this conversation isn't worth my time just because you did something so juvenile. Enjoy getting blocked.
Additionally, I own everything they've ever released in the US (& some bootlegs) (2 EPs & 15 LPs on wax) except videos & singles (in single format) as well as Graffin's 2 solo albums, 2 books & the one by Preston Jones consisting of a year's worth of correspondence between the 2 of them. Ive been following them through more than half their career. I'll post a list of recommended listening when I get a few. I'm cramming for a Western Civ exam now.
Waffle - Are you being deliberately ignorant or are you just unknowingly walking into a gunfight without even a knife. Metaphorically speaking, of course. Have ya heard any of their other songs? No, they're not all non-believers, & no, Bad Religion—as an entity, does not outright state an "official" stance on religion. But seriously, go listen to em a little more then get back to me.
@HandiCripple666 I've listened to more than enough of their songs to know that they don't promote atheism. They oppose the mainstream idea of religion and instead support an independant route to it. I think you're taking that crossbuster logo of theirs a little too literally.
prideful father and his son ? the bet was between go and satan. satan is no where remotley gods son!
yes there is sorrow ! what will you do about it? we pour it upon our fellow man, with complete free will. if someone is starving feed him, hurting console and help him, cold and alone ,shelter him. suffering is the time between life and death. if you kill , you are by free will taking it upon YOURSELF to instill sorrow upon mankind, not the dying.
As much as I pray, wish, and hope for it to be gone... sorrow will exist as long as man roams this Earth. Of course, out of incredible misery there is always a light that breaks through...
I hate that people are racist to Muslims for something that they didn't do. Great vid and really true, it's sad that the World resorts to violence instead of words to solve their problems.
Hey! Its not about hate!! It Never Was!! Who disposes of all the evidence, Whether it's m.l.k. Malcolm X, J.F.K. < George Lincoln Rockwell, Or 9/!!???? It sure as hell wasnt me!!
the first time i ever heard this song was in concert, back in 2002, when they came to toronto, but right before i had baught the process of belief cd. and its a memory that i will take with me to the grave. the emotion, the stage presence, the audience interaction during the chorus, everything about this song just resonates with me through the ages. this song is just a timeless masterpiece.
It's always been a peeve of mine to see people relate this song to their personal problems, or their condolences to people who have endured/just recently went through a disaster/horrible event. You're entitled to use the song however you want, but the song was not intended to be an uplift for people who have gone through immense hardships. Rather, its an allegorical song questioning the status of god, and how millions of years of sorrow and hatred in this world could flourish.
That's better than the official video. The only part I'm iffy on is the brief but totally logical flash of Jesus. I've been trying to figure out that lyric for ages, and my only guess is that the reference was intended to be a reference to humanity being the only true "messiah", as in we're all we've got. I think perhaps a sad, pathetic, impotent version of JC would fit in better, HOWEVER, this is siting the fact that BR promotes an atheistic worldview. Ignoring that, it's perfect. Great work.
@HandiCripple666 Thank you ;-) You make an excellent point ;-) This for me is one of of those song in life that just rattled me to the core with truth. Literally the first time I heard it I was dumbfounded with its honesty and shocked how touched I was.
@HandiCripple666 In the official video I noticed as he's singing the "only true messiah" line, Graffin motions at his head 3 times with I believe his right hand.
I suspect the line was deliberately intended to have multiple meanings. One is as you've suggested, the "we're all we've got" idea. The second the obvious religious connotation (intended sarcastically of course), and the third is something a bit more abstract, that the only way we free ourselves is through independent thought.
pambomar Did you make this video or did you just post it? Awesome job if you make it!! I had this on my Buzznet page a long time ago and everyone loved it. I can't believed someone said it was crappy. Ronnzo must be a republican. But with a name like Gonzales that's not a very good party to belong to. Ooops did I say that out loud? Anyway, sorry if I plagerised it with Buzznet. I just did it because I loved the video.
@LDZZ I did make the video but of course the song is all bad religion - you know if people dont like it I dont take it personally at all they are entitled to their opinion ;-)
"or when the only true Messiah rescues us from ourselves" I love that verse. Reminds me of all the people who'd rather accept armageddon as reality and don't concern themselves with the real issues humanity faces because believing in a savior is easier than being one.
This tackles something of a high importance. No one should lived drenched in the HATRED of others. Starvation, Racism, Sexism, etc. should not happen, but it does. This shows what it's like to be a victim of the above. And that is really important.
@thedecaycafe thank you very much , you know I love music and enjoy it everyday in my life this is one of a handful of songs that really touch me and speak to me ;-)
This has been a favorite song of mine for sometime and its rather strange to see how similar our interpretations are. I applaud your willingness to me dark but to also identify the champions of this thought.
Thank you all for your recent posts, I loved putting the pictures to this video, every time I hear this song I feel it in my soul, it is one of those songs that resonates in life.
One of my favorite bands. Yet, when I wanted to put it on my page their video is so self- centered around the singer: Greg. I do believe him to be an egocentric and self-absorbed...although obviously amazingly talented.
Your Video is both fitting and poignant; it compliments their lyrics and playing. Thanks.
In reality, the song "Sorrow" is Greg Graffin's (the lead singer of Bad Religion) critique of [God's role in] the Book of Job from the Old Testament. Read about it and listen to the lyrics again. The lyrics will make much more sense.
However, this is really well done videography for a great song. And I appreciate your freedom and enthusiasm to interpret the lyrics in your own artistic way.

@pambomar Music is religion! How else can you explain how 1 band or 1 song writer, whoever it may be or whatever music taste, can move or effect so many people?
one of my favs also great job! weird to think they were just kids really so talented and passionate makes me feel less except 4 the fact that i get what they were saying even at a very young age great job
Thanks for the video and song. Well put together with a complete message. Indeed, we need to protest war and change the wrong in our society. And, by the way, thanks for introducing me to this band. They rock!
Thanks! It took me days to get it the way I wanted it, but I love the song so much that it was so enjoyable to make. The first time I watched it whole after I put it together I got chills.. Bad Religion is ....Well RIGHTEOUS>>>>

@pambomar Music is religion! How else can you explain how 1 band or 1 song writer, whoever it may be or whatever music taste, can move or effect so many people?

Thanks for the video and song. Well put together with a complete message. Indeed, we need to protest war and change the wrong in our society. And, by the way, thanks for introducing me to this band. They rock!
