Can't really compare The White Stripes version with this one.(I'm referring to the popular Blackpool Lights rendition of Jolene) Two sides of two different coins. Jack puts a more somber twist on this song with his exaggerated vocals, which are more expressionistic.The non-technicality of his singing mixed with the desperate tone he adds are wrenching and I'm more partial to that version as well,but again: the genre of music is completely different and this has its own very long list of merits.

Though Marling is a fantastic musician, her lyrics belie a great deal of mental turmoil. I think Mumford preferred a woman he could have a fun happy life with instead of dealing with potential mood swings and depression. As he sings in Hold on to What You Believe "I could not take the burden of both me and you."
