only HMS Victory is really old, the sole survivor of the wooden warschips.

Shtandart and HMS Bounty whose 's still sailing are both replica's (very nice replica's though!)

By the way, i wish someone should get a genial idea to build a wooden clipper ships, they are all only building 17th and 18th century ships...

USS Constitution is a little younger than the HMS Victory. USS Constitution was commisioned in 1797.

Als je van zeilschepen houdt moet je echt het boek ''Het Fregatschip Johanna Maria'' Van Arthur van Schendel eens lezen.

Het is geinspireerd op de geschiedenis van het in 1851 in Amsterdam te water gelaten ''Z.S.Staveren''; een van de Nederlandse clippers.

De eerste echte clipper was de in 1828 gebouwde ''Sea Witch''.

De Yankees hadden ontdekt dat een fregattuig, gecombineerd met een relatief lage en slanke romp, schepen opleverde die bij goede wind wel 15 knopen (32km/u !) konden halen.

New York werd in de 20/30 jaar daarna de thuishaven magnifieke schepen als

de ''White Cloud'', "Stag Hound'', ''Spearwind'', etc.

De Engelsen namen het over en een goed voorbeeld daarvan is de nog steeds bestaande in Greenwich liggende ''Cutty Sark''.
