when you recorded this you recognised the the beauty of this song,a fitting tribute and a fine interpretation of Judee's music. always loved the hollies as well, thanks.
@ragnarok, in Last Tempation of Christ, by Nikos Kazantzakis, Jesus is a carpenter like his dad Joseph and made crosses for crucifixions before he got his vocation. Judee was inspired by this book (like Martin Scorcese later) to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
@morinicuk: Yes, it's my opinion, whose else? btw: i don't think that most people even know the originator of this song interpreted by the Hollies, but it's worth the time do get these informations, nevermind
Am not religious, but I always loved this song ever since it was released in Holland early '70 s. Then I was 13yo. But at that time lotta words I didn't understand quite well. Always thought Judee Sill sang:'He's abandoned, instead of he's a bandit'. Or I thought I heard:'His sister by his side, but it was a pistol by his side. Well, after 4 decades I now finally know what the correct lyrics are...LOL...:-)

hhawkfilm: You don't have to be religious to appreciate this song. The Hollies did a nice version and no doubt the royalties helped Judee Sill but the correct interpretation lies with Judee. Judee Sill lived the tortured life ( heroin addict, prostitute, thief) behind the lyrics and the opening lines are a cry for help.
hhawkfilm: I too never really appreciated this song nor the original writer until i searched for it today.
I never realised Judee Sill had died so tragically in 1979 after battling prostitution, heroin, and an abusive stepfather & boyfriend. No doubt her call for angelic protection and the mention of the 'bandit/heartbreaker' refers to her boyfriend. The singer Judy Tzuke also covered it in 1978 or so. Judee Sill was aided by Graham Nash who was an early member of The Hollies.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize this was a cover and hadn't heard of the original artist. Now I have a different appreciation of the song.
