Tom Brown who plays Gilbert here is cute - everyone needs to remember this was a different time. Anne Shirley was what people would have expected Anne to be like in the 30s - we must remember that movies, in one way are another, are a product of the era they were produced in. Brown's Gilbert was an "aww shucks" kind of type that was prevelant among juvenile actors of the studio era. Yes, this adaptation is loose, not as affective as the CBC productions, but enjoyable nonetheless.
