If I lived in one of those states I'd probably buy a fairly expensive shotgun too, like a Benelli. They're light, accurate and reliable, which is what you want in a deer hunting shotgun.

You do know of course that if the barrel is RIFLED its a RIFLE not a smoothbore shotgun,why call it a shotgun when it is really a .729cal RIFLE?I actually prefer a full 12ga smooth bore to these sabot shooting rifles, for all practical purposes they are just as usefull at 100yds and under and offer full size slugs that make REALLY BIG HOLES! @LeonPao so what have you done for wildlife habitat conservation? hunting provides funds for conservation. it helps in wildlife management by giving population information. there is such a thing as to many deer for a given area and you know what hunting does about that? not what you think. funds form fish and game licenses help set up feeding stations in winter when the natural food supply is to low to support the population.

@polemonek some game animals can't see in color and the camouflage breaks up the outline of the hunter with the environment, while the orange makes you easily seen by fellow hunters to avoid an accident. Its more important to stay safe than to be completely undetectable. Hunter orange is essentially a hunter standard.

Rifled slug guns are overrated.

A smooth bore 12ga. is a 100 yard gun all day long ,in the right hands.

Sabot slugs have inferior terminal ballistics and really don't give you any extra range when factor in the loss.

Passed 100 years Sabots are a poor choice compared to a rifle....or just walking a few yards to get with in rage of a full bore 12 slug.

A 3" magnum 1 1/4-1 3/8oz slug will drop anything on the planet.

I'm not going to trade that for a little extra range.

My SX3 with a rifled barrel hits a pie sized targets at 250-300 yards every time with cheap home brewed key slugs going at 1700 FPS, I have shot and killed a lot of animals with smooth bore slugs as well and would never attempt a shot on live game past 100

@sirhcskoorb thats a nice idea, but switching to a rifle is not always an option. we cannot use rifles in my part of michigan. I use a mossber 695 bolt action slug gun, with the correct scope and slug I have a gun that can take and has taken deer out to 200yds, very comfortably. I agree that at longer rangers a rifle is always the best but if you dont have the choice to use one a well set slug gun can take deer at longer ranges than a smooth bore.

@hunt787 If its only lead and not copper jacket its fine, wont be as accurate though due to the slug getting slightly deformed while leaving the barrel. And if your barrel is newer the metal is hard enough nothing will happen to it. Older guns however had softer metals in them and you would have problems.
