  • Them old 2 stroke Detroits where junk. You drove 100 miles .you thought you drove 1000. All that noise and shifting gears.Going up a mountain 20 miles per hour a row of cars behind you trying to pass.

  • @truckway1 Might be true, they didnt have the low end torque like the four strokes had and you had to keep them above 2100 to get usable power (you had to use the gearbox right, and all 14+ gears). But still, beeing a design from the late 30's that was unchanged for almost 60 years, and as popular it was(is), they (Detroit\GM) Had to do SOMEthing right...

  • Have yours see the 2 strokes diesel from my only by valves and without springs? save more than 30% on consumption, with less noise. Check it.

  • So that's what the Americans capture the new oil.

  • this wouldnt be in sydney ferry ship yard would it?

  • @brendanraymond It is a shipyard yes, but not in Australia. Im from Norway, and the only other country I've been to is Sweeden :)

  • That's the venerable old 318, a really hot machine back in the 70's, with the twin turbos it's probably more like 350 hp gross.

  • Would this engine fit in a newer model 379 Pete, say for instance a 2006 379?

  • @lrecollet That I do not know. I know that it is possible to put a 6v53 in a large car (GMC), but it has to be modified a lot to fit. Dont take my word, but it wouldnt suprise me if it bolted right in. :)

  • @lrecollet - 2-stroke Detroit Diesels were offered in the old 359s... you may have to get an older trans due to bellhousings possibly being different, but it can be done.

  • Why dont marine engines run with intercoolers ?

  • @bunchofdicks Many times they do, but an intercooler dont need to be as large as a car intercooler since they use water instead to cool down the air, they can be so small that they can be put inside the intake, but under a different term: Aftercooler - its like an inverted intercooler. On this engine its in the "box" between the turbos. High power detroits (and other) are often equipped with aftercoolers that sits below the blower "inside" the "Vee" of a V-engine.

  • @bunchofdicks Intercooler wouldn't do much good because you don't get airflow like you would on an engine that is in a car going down the highway.

  • it looks like its turbo'd and supercharged???

  • @CaptainBig8IIIIIID Detroits two strokes are naturally blown (not really supercharged, but enough for scavenging air through the cyllinders)

  • Wouldn't it be great if a car manufacturer could develop a direct injection two stoke diesel that was clean enough to pass modern emissions tests ? I love the sound of these engines. Mazda made a two stroke diesel for a small Sirion hatchback some years ago, but needless to say, we didn't get to buy them in the UK. It gave 95mpg, too good for our tax hungry governments to allow them to be imported.

  • Now all we need is for someone to make a motorcycle out of that!

  • Fuk'in Okees!

  • Doesn't look like a 2 Stroke. there are Valves!

  • @RCPhilN Diesel 2 strokes are a completely different design from gas. They require forced induction to even work. they use valves and injectors, but the valves are only for exhaust. They open while the piston is nearing the bottom of the stroke, then the piston uncovers the intake port/s at the full bottom of the stroke. The air forced in by the turbo pushes the exhaust out the valves. The valves close and the piston begins the upward compression stroke. at the top the injector fires.

  • @Preowner

A direct injection 2-stroke gasoline engine can work entirely on the same principle. It is quite easy to convert a Detroit 2-stroke diesel to direct injection gasoline. The Orbital premix direct injection system would do it when sized up correctly.

Ecomotors, with Bills Gates' money, are developing an opposed piston diesel engine and also a petro version for cars. This engine will hit the market in many forms.

Search for the Rootes TS3 opposed piston diesel engine. Made for 18 yrs

  • holy shit look at that fly wheel. bolt it down good!

  • that is a monster engine

  • Non turbo'd 8v71's were around the 300 horse mark- this must be well over 400!

  • @francovance1 Yeah, the N/A'd 8v71's was often called "Detroit 318". Because it had around 318hp. I believe there allso was a "Detroit 190", not really sure what engine it was though.

  • @Da9eI do you remember the big dripper

  • @Da9eI Im probably wrong, but 40 hp per cylinder NA and 60 HP per cylinder turbo comes to mind. but I might be thinking of the 53s or 92s not sure

  • @Da9eI A lot of the economy 6-71's are rated at 190 HP

  • @Da9eI love the sound on that engine, where can i get some information about your shopi am interested in buying some stuff from you email me a murdockmiami@aol.com

  • @francovance1 For truck use they were 260, 290 and 318 without a turbo, 335 and 350 with a turbo. Stationary and marine ratings would have been higher.

  • You can tell DDs are beefed up as soon as he started revving it the planks wanted to tip over lol.

  • when detroit started making the v-8s they werent very good my dad had a brand new 1979 kw and had to put 3 of the detroit v 8s before the warranty run out

  • So you get twice as many power strokes per RPM as you would

on a regular 4 stroke. No wonder its such a beast!

  • hahah it almost fell off the stand

  • It sounds just like a regular gas powered v8

  • i think your tinny would be on bottom of the lake, this engine weighs about 1 ton .

  • looks like it nearly killed everyone when it started up lol

  • I would love to have this engine in my 14 foot Valco aluminum boat. Will it sink?

  • @kimmer6 hmm.. thats a tough one.. Mybe it will float if you put only the engine in, and if it were still sea (no waves) and no passengers, then mybe.. or mybe not. I think this particular DD weight was around 1.4 tonnes, or around 3000lb, with water, oil and fuel in it. Thats the weight of a small european car!

  • @Da9eI I like the way it torques over when it fires. What an awesome beast. Even my marine 3-53 with Velvet drive is one heavy chunk of iron. It broke my engine lift. I am installing a GM 6.5 turbo diesel in my 21 foot boat right now. It weighs maybe 300lbs more than the Perkins I took out.and has 150 more horses. I will keep the 3-53 just to hear it scream. Maybe make a margarita mixer on a trailer out of it!

  • @Da9eI

that's the weight of a medium to large european car...

  • @rasmAn2 You're right. I thought of it right after I posted the comment :P

  • @kimmer6 MAYHAPS, YOU COULD RUN IT AS AN OUTBOARD with a prop shaft from the rear main

  • @largestones Great idea. Tailand style boating. But I also have a notion to mount my Detroit on a trailer with a recliner on the flywheel end and attach a rather large dildo to it.......World's most powerful marital aid. They both scream. Rent it out for batchelor parties.

  • Great if you had recorded all of the cranking.

  • beast !

  • i wish i could get that lucky to find a gem like that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ohhh I like how those turbo's sound at idle.

  • Reminds me of Diesel engine school. NOTHING sounds like a detroit.

  • Thats one hell of a stand setup!

  • Can't keep a good engine down... glad it was rescued from that boat and is enjoying new life again.

  • look at all that torque! Hoorah!

  • I want to stand in the White smoke and take a deep breathe, <3 Diesel Tokes x) lol j/k, Deff Love diesel pew pew though, Love my 6.2, dont know if I can ever go back to gas now, I want this think in my truck! hehe,

  • that thing looked like it wanted to jus take off an leave lol

  • this were great powerfull engines , long lasting , unfortunatelly they don't meet the EPA requirements for diesel emissions now a days,,,, like anything else regulated becomes 25 cents a pound.

  • Thats a great video. I worked in the engineering dep. at Wimmera Base Hospital shortly in Horsham, Aus, and the best part of working there was the fortnightly run-ups of the emergency generator. It was 2 twin-charged DD

892's bunged up end-on-end, and the sound was magic!

  • now they should convert it to run on chip fat. a great way to have a powerful but cheap to run engine

  • ohh yea straight off the turbos you know i like it like that

  • Cuando crei que ya habia visto motores contaminantes aparece esto, V8 2t

  • How on earth is this a 2-stroke? if you read about the diffrence between 2 and 4-stroke , how could there be a turbo? how would it get any boost with the exhaust ports always open? I dunno, there are more techies in here than me i suppose...

  • Two-stroke diesel cycle is different than gas 2-cycle. Two-stroke diesels can't draw in their air so they have to have a blower to blow the air in for them, and the only valves they have are exhaust valves. With blower alone, 2-stroke diesels are considered naturally-aspirated, and this engine here has twin turbos with the turbos going into the blower.

  • Another thing is that when this motor is revved up, listen to the exhaust. It sounds like a gas engine when revved because of it being a 2-stroke. Because of the cylinders firing on every stroke of the piston, it sounds like it's running at close to 5000 RPM when its actually only turning around 2200+. These 2-stroke Detroits are called 'Screaming Jimmies' because of that.

  • I don't know how it works on a deisel but I have a two stroke snowmobile with a turbo on it.

  • That's because the exhaust ports ARE NOT ALWAYS open. They have poppet exhaust valves just like a 4 stroke. They don't have intake valves, intake air is blown in via the blower and boost pressure is supplied by the turbos.

  • Of course you can put a turbo on a 2-stroke.

  • Can anyone fill me in please? I know nothing about 2 stroke diesels but this one sounds AWESOME! much better than a 4 stroke. Whats the difference between the 2 and the 4 stroke on diesel?

  • I WANT IT IN MY PICK UP.....lol

  • 450 hp and about 1700 foot pounds

  • Dont know to much about two stroke diesels but dose it have a roots blowers as well as the turbos?Or just the turbos?

  • Both, however the blower are necessary for this type of engine to start and run. It is considered narurally aspirated with only blower.

  • The engine has to have a blower because there are NO INTAKE VALVES only exhaust valves. the piston and piston liner act as the intake valves. need more info just ask me.

  • HMM i have been working on dd engines for longer than you have been around there son. go get a manual, there are 4 exhaust valves in the head yea the blower is used for savaging you have that much correct ! did you also know that if the blower drive shaft is broken the engine wont run ? because there will be no intake air into the liners . i am so sorry to be so stupid so help me out will you ?

  • @ford427mustang They haven't always had 4 valves per cylinder.

  • Well apparently Jordan "knows everything about 2 strokes"... but still knows nothing about DIESEL 2 strokes. It's amazing some of the smart mouthed idiots you find on here...

  • Opposed-piston engines like the Napier Deltic have no valves at all. Others need exhaust valves.

  • @halohadel Look at the video from 1:14 to about 1:20 . there is a blower right next to the open valve cover. sitting on top. Marine engines have very high horse power because of the almost unlimited water cooling threw the lake or ocean. no radiator they use a heat exchanger, Exhaust manifolds are cooled by water also.

  • @halohadel I see you dont know much about DD. 2 turbos blow into the blower

  • @Da9eI It is neading Roots Blower, it don´t run with out that. Because there is only exhaust valves and clean air is blowed inside with blower and same time is going exhaust out fro valves, clean air is coming inside from side of cylinder made canal. Oil is down like in normal 4 stroke engine.

  • I need one for my pickup truck, lol

  • Is it for sale?

  • It's an 8v71ti,that's the intercooler between the turbos. 450hp. @ 2350.

  • nope not an intercooler; it is the intake from the turbos blowing into a supercharger. lookup 8v71TT

  • i guess its rather around 600-700hp

  • for a motor that's been sitting a while it sure sounds great...good find right there

  • Impressive motor... Fantastic Detroit diesel 2 stroke

  • ok what would you put that in

  • a road tractor...

  • that engine is going into a boat. notice the marine exhaust and marine day tank in front. In 1:12 you can see the marine transmission on the ground.

  • A dune buggy. lol

  • Is this a boat engine?

  • Yes it is, you can see the salt\fresh water cooler on the right\front of the engine (Exhasyst is the rear)

  • No it was taken out of a partially sunken helicopter.. Yes it is a boat engine...The vessel was partially sunk.. as noted in the video description

  • well where i used to work we had an old cab over freight liner with this motor and it was a 425 hp

  • Comment removed

  • I wish I was there now, taping it with a better camera\mic, mybe giving it a rev when warm, it DID idle like that for a whole day! (this was early morning) Without anybody beeing there, so I had lots of time then. *mad at myself* (why why? WHY?!!)

  • did you get it for free?

  • No. Somebody else owned it, and was selling it himself. It did run like that to make sure everything was ok, as a brake-in for beeing unused for a long time. Im not sure where it is now... Vid was added here about 3 or 4 years after I recorded it.

  • Nice Detroit video!!!!

  • You're very lucky!

  • we got one of them at work in a WHITE its got 750000 kms on it starts up every time she pumps out abit of white smoke though.dirty fuel ;p

  • 350,000 miles??? I've seen plenty of these beasts with 1.5 million on them. Our old fleet at work was all GMC Brigadiers with 671 and 6v71 Detroits. Mine had 1,600,000 on it when they finally retired it.

  • twin turbo v8 diesel engine!!!!!! how much horse power and even better how much torque!

  • Well you have to start someplace.

  • 300,000miles?

    thats a marine engine.

the tug I work on has 16v149 mains and 4-71 generators. The one generator has 35,000hours on it since it's last rebuild :-) hard to beat.

  • the main genset (6-71 Detroit) on the F/B Ionio Pelagos has 57,000 hours this summer. Rebuilt 4 times...

  • ..and they make more noise (I love it!, some don't) Im not sure the total hours it has, but I think its has about 300hrs since last overhaul\rebuild. I know these engines run 70.000+ hrs without too many problems, by just ideling them warm before use, and using correct motor oil. We had a inline 6 in our boat, with N40 (or was it 45?) injectors, still I regret now that I did not video tape it, bacause the noise it made was amazing!

  • enough power to roll itself over when it staarted

  • There's no need to know how much power it has... When someone asks all you have to say is "a lot" and that should sum it up. Saw a non turbo 6v71 305hp and 700 something ft/lbs on the dyno.

  • There is a reason why 2 strokes are no longer used today in major markets. For the fuel you dump into them they don't make nearly enough power. Modern in line 6s in trucks are making 400-600hp and 1500-2000 ft/lbs and do it with better fuel economy than that relic. Now as for how long it will run before a rebuild....detroits seems to be amazing for that...worf the f*uck out but still runs. Sometime you can't start them without ether and they still run fine. lol
