  • my guitar is watching this and thinking "Joe come rescue me from this string murderer"

  • Joe Pass... what does he tune down to?

  • Well!!....that made me a bit sick!...did you hear those freakin' chords he was playing?....

and, he makes it all look so freakin' simple!... I have an idea of the types of chords he's playing here, and you don'y hear that too often from guitarist!.

God Bless you Don Giuseppe!...and, I'm sure your making all your "heavenly" saints up there

pretty happy with your sensational playing.. guitar playing will never ever be the same without you!... I still grieve that a talent like you is gone!....

  • @dialecticalreason except sub out Kenny Burrell and Grant Green and with Miles and 'Trane

  • 17 people have shit for brains...

  • my dads sooo lucky, got to jam with himm

  • How do you pronounce his last name?

  • @dunokuba the way it's spelled

  • @dunokuba pazzzzzzzzzzz

  • Joe Pass is class.

  • after this i have no more confidence in my guitar skills . i just quit . lol

  • Veramente un grande e uno dei pochi grandissimi !!!!! JOE PASS!!!!!

  • fucking epic

  • Great song and master improvisor. All you folks gotta realize it ain't chops and it ain't learned! It's ear training.PERIOD!Get your minimum 10,000 hrs. in and learn to solfege or never be able to play beyond blowin' smoke up your friends asses!

  • @DiscoRByrno Oh, I would agree with you on that. I'm just saying there is an inherent human nature.

  • I was going to say something about Joe`s Virtuosity....But I think that he says it all here on this clip...Duke and Django would just love what Joe does to Satin Doll`

  • @DiscoRByrno Humanity had to develop that desire of advancement and success from something. It's because we have an evolutionary drive to survive and not only that, but thrive.

  • это лучшее из джазовых гитаристов

  • @DiscoRByrno Ok, I just thought you sounded kinda...dumb...no offense man im sure ur a good guy but just really? human nature doesn't exist? and political parties are the source of human corruption? people cheat even in trivial games...it's just in our nature to want to win and get ahead and be wealthy. human nature can't NOT exist. u can believe humans are inherently good or inherently have a blank slate, but u can't say humans have no nature. it's just not possible.

  • @DiscoRByrno lmao...How old are you?

  • @DiscoRByrno Now I do think that the Republican leaders and Democrat leaders are corrupt but they aren't corrupt because they are republicans and democrats. They are corrupt because humans are corrupt. That's why we need a small government. Then no one can control your life. You choose whether or not you want to do drugs. You have freedom to start a business and become successful. Etc. Screw them.. They can't tell me how to live my life.

  • @DiscoRByrno lmao...Political parties don't cause corruption. Human nature causes corruption. Political parties are necessary in a democracy. People don't agree on things in life. People who have similar opinions voice their preference. That's all they are. Saying "you suck" to someone over the internet does not interfere with their pursuit of happiness. I can still get up and go to work every day regardless of what names some random person says to me on the internet.

  • @DiscoRByrno Cyber bullying should not be a crime. It impedes on our free speech. Suicide should be legal as it is all free will. You have to freedom to end your life if you want to. I'm surprised you say fuck the government, but you want it to grow. Theres a lot of hypocrisy there. Fuck the government is pretty much my argument when I say I'm a libertarian. The fact that you know that politicians are corrupt and yet you want to make them more powerful scares me. is humanity that stupid?

  • @DiscoRByrno You suck. I used my free speech to tell you that. Whether it is true or not that you suck, I can still say whatever the hell I want. It's called freedom. It's only limits are when it hurts someone else's freedom. So the only laws that should exist should be those protecting your rights. If someone tries to kill you, they are trying to harm your right to life. Then you have reason for a law. But regulating speech? If the government ever tries to, I'll rebel. Liberty or death

  • @DiscoRByrno Speaking one's mind should be a crime?! He wasn't imposing anything on you. You are still able to listen to rock music aren't you? Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of a free, libertarian society.

  • @DiscoRByrno Well. If you believe in free speech, he does have the right to trash talk rock. Whether he is correct or not? Well...I don't think so but I believe in three basic rights: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

  • wow

  • 13 people would rather listen to Kenny G

  • goddamn that was beautiful.

  • Does anyone else think Joe was just goofin' with that very sub-par ending after he pushed the guitar to it's limits?

  • INCREDIBLE. Thanks to Kees Nipius of the Netherlands, another fine guitar player, for telling me about Joe Pass........Pamela

  • What amp is JP using here?

  • ohh god!! i have been playing guitar but only with rock and metal, but when i seen this video i says i want to learn to play jazz guitar !!

  • @rudewey I went through that myself. I always been a bluesman too. Yes, it is an awakening.

  • @larrystarstruck it's never too late, my friend :)

the worst thing you could do was to stop learning new things and developing yourself....

  • @rudewey I used to be a straight up rock and metal player. Probably the worst decision I've made when it comes to guitar playing. Learning jazz just takes your playing and fluency to a whole new level. It takes a lot of practice, but it is so worth it. Go for it!

  • @rudewey Your comments fill me with happiness! It's the second time tonight I've seen postings from rock fans who discover what jazz guitarists can do. I was fifteen in 1965 when I heard Joe Pass for the frist time, playing a song called Catch Me. His father used to force him to practice because he didn't want his son working at the steelworks like him. He was one of the true masters of jazz guitar and has been an inspiration to me all these years. Keep working on it!

  • @rudewey I have been playing metal and rock and when I got to college I started in the jazz band and it has changed how I thought about EVERYTHING on guitar, it's extremely difficult to learn and even more difficult to master. It helps a lot and you will get further with jazz roots while playing rock and metal

  • @rudewey need some help? create a 12 bar blues A7 - D7- E7 ,then play on it A pentatonic blues,d pentatonic blues ,e pentactonic plues -all positions near to the first ,then do the same with arpezzion -all newa to A position and ..you play jazz!

  • @highvoltageactivity that I IV V progression its just the basics to play real jazz you need to know chord melody and other stuff like... well just being plain sick and talented.

  • @AnvikThe The II V I is the basic progression to play jazz ...but before that you have to learn the blues....frank gambale cannot be wrong....

  • @highvoltageactivity that sounds right i have no complains.

  • @highvoltageactivity Frank Gambale is wrong.

  • @clangerlover yea...you better not listen to Frank Gambale advices ...if you think its not good...

  • yea...if you look the guitar upside down its all wrong...

  • @rudewey Lol, we have all been there!

  • genius

  • just found this gem

    VLC download!!

  • Arguing back and forth is just a childish ego clash mixed with a necessity to have the last word. PLEASE, if you want to argue in your style of "Is too! Is not! Is too!", just exchange email addresses and go at it. I know I'm speaking for many when I say it's worse than boring - it's childish and insulting.

  • @cfthblack

Agreed. Though I do enjoy a good hipster fight!

  • Mr. Joe Pass,

I'm a big fan of your playing. You inspire me to be a better musician because of your style and finesse, your amazing knowledge of harmony and melody. You also inspire me to be a better person, since you over came your addictions and regained an appreciation for life and passion. I just learned how to play "Django", your cover of the Modern Folk Quartet composition. Although I play it note for note, it will take me a lifetime to get even close to your rendition. That's ok with me.

  • Du know, Hendrix was great so was Joe pass........but jimmy had gals in the audience.....Jo add none , how do i know dat ,cause im fucking Michael Cane and im not avin this silly argument gals.

  • show off

  • Holy mother of god!

  • @DiscoRByrno >_>

  • @DiscoRByrno You're all giant turds now shut up and enjoy

  • @DiscoRByrno Yeah yeah yeah, pretend to be the Her Most Venerable Cheerleader of Rock and lame and fuck and shit all you want, the truth is that rock doesn't go anywhere, they know it, and every fucking self-conscious musician play it for a while knows it. What? 3 chord blues? progressive? Neo metal? punk? fucking grunge and bla bla? It's not about music. It's about "attitude" and that doesn't mean jack shit. And for your information, your logic fails miserably.

  • Going to go with DiscoRByrno on this one. Rock is dead. It is just a conglomeration of I, IV, and V chords in no particular order. sure they put some sweeps in and an 8 bar solo, but frankly, Rock sucks balls. Jimi Hendrix is Awesome, don't get me wrong, but he was more of a blues guitarist than anything. And to add to that, probably the best blues guitarist of all time. He makes clapton look like a 12 year old. Jimi is King. and Pass is just as awesome

  • Spider Fingers............

  • @DiscoRByrno i was just responding to what croissantorange said about rock being dumbed down, Hendrix is one of my favorites

  • @swanski100 Often the mainstream rock/commercial rock is just too dumbed down and simple.

All genres are good(except for crunkcore) but it depends on the bands.

  • @hallmargauti simple doesn't necessarily mean bad or dumbed down - but yes crunkcore is rather bad

  • @swanski100 Well yeah, often it can be simple but it has emotions put into it and is interesting.

As i said, depends on the bands AND how they execute their ideas.

  • @DiscoRByrno sarcasm bro...

  • @DiscoRByrno Yap yap yap same ol bullshit. Look at the patterns you can tell what rock "musicians" really care about: Being cool, fame, attention aka "making it", money and fun (pussies, drugs). Hardly the most knowledgeable and intelligent beings in this world. I know that people have to make a living but rockers today border whoring for a couple of bucks. And what's up with that "someone care about", does it mean attention whore and have nothing to do with music per se? Fuck rock "musicians".

  • @CroissantOrange looks like someone didn't "make it"

  • @swanski100 Make what? Shit in people's ears?

  • @CroissantOrange i feel bad for you dude, must suck to be so ignorant and unappreciative, with all the crap out today you're going after Hendrix?

  • @swanski100 Yeah? Thanks. And I don't feel bad for little cunts like you who can't form your own opinions but have to let bullshit like the "they have shit today, we have to suck Hendrix dick" ramming its Rolling Stone Top 100 Guitar Players of All time Dick up your asshole: just another lifeless empty piece of shit going down the the shit hole. Your opinions are weak and your arguments don't make sense. Fuck you. And fuck Hendrix.

  • @CroissantOrange I can't form my own opinions? The self-righteous jazz guy who thinks all music that is technically inferior is shit is about as stereotypical as it comes. Say something original.

  • @swanski100 Take that "Technically inferior" shit that you just pulled out of your herpes ridden ass away from me. And saying Hendrix is pretty shitty in this world is pretty Original statistic wise but probably not for you dumbfuck because "something original" in your tiny little well means "some same ol bullshit with a new sugar coat that simple enough so i can understand and agree with but hip enough so i can feel cool amidst of the dumber worms who are my friends and i can jerk off too".

  • @CroissantOrange actually I'm pretty sure from your elitist attitude I listen to a much larger variety of music than you do, try and open your eyes to something else, might make your life a little less pathetic troll

  • @swanski100 I don't see why telling a stupid opinion stupid is "elitist". What should I do? Pretend to be so understanding and repeat some new age hippie's escapist chant like "Oh I love everyone and life is good"? Fuck that. Life is not that good because people are dumb as fuck, including you. And I don't "troll" you fucking idiot, I mean it: you're fucking dumb and Hendrix played like shit and my insults are not "trolling" but more like stepping on insects on the street. Shit face.

  • @CroissantOrange alright bro, its all good

  • @CroissantOrange Actually, Joe Pass was addicted to heroine and he is a jazz musician.

  • the 11 dislikes must not like the guitar...or jazz..or anything...

  • @synesthesia67 heehhe really I like Your hint..! especially about the guitar+++...

I was thinking who could be those who disliked this clip and came to conclusion that they must be accepting only guitarists who are " The rush scalerunners " and gimmicks

  • Patrick Star led me here...Free Form Jazz!!

  • Classiest jazz guitarist their is

  • This gets better each time i watch it i swear.

  • awesome!!!....

  • Lets get this clear please I am not against tabs...what i am saying is that if you start reading music or learn by ear you would become a better musician thats my point

  • @LOLOKAKASOSO I read a bio on Joe Pass. HIs father got him a guitar when he was 9 years old and forced him to practice hours on end so he would not have to work in a steel mill like his dad. I guess it paid off. Joe pass said in an interview to learn as many melodies and chord changes as you can. With Joe Pass, it was never about finger exercises, it was about music. It should always be about the music.

Practicing finger exercises does not make one a jazz player, ear training does.

  • @joeyguitarlo "Joe pass said in an interview to learn as many melodies and chord changes as you canWith Joe Pass, it was never about finger exercises, it was about music. Practicing finger exercises does not make one a jazz player, ear training does."

I agree which is why I never could get past the boring rote finger exercises on both piano and guitar that my teachers always insisted that I learn. Teachers always want to go the classical route when teaching ugh! Teach me to play a song.

  • @LOLOKAKASOSO and what about sheet music what do you think about that

  • @professionaltroller1 personally I think that if someone learns to read music instead of reading tabs, that will facilitate the understanding of the language faster but to be a jazz improviser you ave to train many aspects its not that easy I am reading Joe Pass book...I think that is the fastest way to get to jazz academicly speaking

  • @LOLOKAKASOSO by joe pass book you mean is biographie or joe pass song sheet music

  • @professionaltroller1 I mean the RED BOOK

  • Joe Pass. The greatest jazz guitarist ever. EVER !

  • usually I hat this type of comments but comeon people I got to say it "Eleven people searched for this TAB"

  • @LOLOKAKASOSO whats wrong with tab?

  • @swanski100 personall I think that tabs are for guitarrists but not for musicians and qhen you get to a pro level and you only rad tabs... this can be really bad for your career...if you only play guitar for fun its ok....also other people beieve taht guitar players who only rely i tabs end up playing like parrot talking

  • @LOLOKAKASOSO tab has been a very popular method of learning since the renaissance for string players... and it actually helped me learn some theory

  • my god joe how did you managed to flow your feelings so freely into the neck into a piece that its so so hard!

  • I have a washburn that looks exactly the same lol

  • Joe Pass is my favourite Jazz guitarist right after Wes Montgomery.

  • i dont know anything about this kind of music but THAT is art ... someone knowing his instrument and playing like that is art .... AMAZING

  • Why someone even mention Hendrix? Rock is dumbed down music with a lot of the same ol' 3 blues licks, unnecessary monkeying around on stage - aka "showmanship" for easily impressionable fucks - couple with amplified sound and ego.

  • @CroissantOrange yeah Hendrix sucked... he probably didn't even like music

  • @CroissantOrange You mad bro?

  • @CroissantOrange

good music is good music,be it hendrix,or Pass or whatever, why not just respect all of it..

  • @frillylizzard Sure. But rockstars, or whatever stars now, are not about the music, they just want everybody to come and look at their imagined giant dick so they can be cooler than the other guy doing the same fucking thing with lesser watts amps.

  • @CroissantOrange You make a valid point..but myne goes to 11. LOL

  • @SnuggleBear1970 Good for you man.

  • NICE

  • Joe Pass was in a class all by himself. The man was INCREDIBLE and one of the best jazz guitarists of all-time. Watch and learn... then you will either want to lock yourself in your practice room and woodshed as much as possible or burn your guitar. I prefer the former option, but realize I will never be in the same universe as this legend.

  • @peacemover I have thought about quietly putting my guitars into a dumpster but decided to try and learn some of this stuff. Joe Pass never wasted time on finger exercises and that stuff, he only focused on learning songs, melodies, and chord changes.

  • 1:23 the best

  • 1 des plus grand, technien et harmoniste d'une très grande valeur

il doit représenter pour les grateurs d'aujourd'hui l'évangile selon l'ami joe pass.

mais pour là,malheurement il faut travailler dur pour y arriver....

  • This is just amazing.

  • I see so many guitarists break there fingers trying play an impossible chords, but JP knows how to make the best MELODIES with the most common of them all

  • You know you're good when you don't need any accompaniment to sound incredible.

  • Thanks for sharing this video!

  • gibson es-175 in case anyone was wondering.

  • 10000 of 490000 views is me

  • @ConfusionXIII and all the rest is from me :p

  • @ConfusionXIII did you refresh the page everytime?

  • @ConfusionXIII YOU ASS!. HOW ABOUT LEAVING SOME FOR THE REST OF US!!!! :P

  • How very dweary and sad it is to hear people talking about which guitar player is best, etc. So..., Let's try this once more from the top: The man who's video you just listened to is the great Joe Pass. Having met Joe out in San Francisco I can tell you first hand--he was a great little guy with a quirky sense of humor. People loved him for just what he was - a wonderful human being. Oh, I almost forgot to mention, he also played the guitar.

  • one of Mainstream Modern Jazz Guitarists Greatest!

  • Joseph Passalaqua may you live forever in the hearts and thoughts of all your fans!! RIP Uncle Joe! A gentleman, guitar master and musical genius! No one comes close.

  • Yesssss....

  • wow! awesome performance of this song! i just watched another amazing version of satin doll fused with neil young's cinnamon girl to get cinnamon doll. ck it out

    search cinnamon doll jazz

i think u will dig it

  • When I see his face, i'm always like: "wow, should be good to be over there, in heaven or something like that..." Why don't I have this face when I play? ho, maybe it's because it sounds ugly...

  • I like him 'cause he's almost the only one BALD jazzist ...ahahah!!

  • DREAM THEATER

  • 11 people don't appreciate awesome jazz and or awesome mustaches.

  • Just heard Joe for the first time, through his album "Simplicity." Wonderful!

  • Twin peaks starting 1 thirty.

  • jimi joe jeff john jimmy >J<

  • a man and a chuck of wood with strings on it. we (literate musicians) get out there and fuck with all kinds of crazy shenanigans, from midi to wild recording techniques to every piece of technology under the sun. however, this guy on a stool doesn't fall short to anything i've ever heard. astounding.

  • @lralbrecht Calling that guitar a chuck of wood is a blasphemy. You might want to try other expressions that don't sound simplistic (simple is manly, simplistic is fag-alike).

  • @filipe200x chunk* either way, the point is that its a direct connection to this object. try and not use the word fag in this context or any other.

  • @lralbrecht Right, chunk*. Thanks fag!

  • @lralbrecht How profound of you to say so. You, definately are a man of intelligence. Live long and prosper my friend.

  • @OstentatiousTyler just a humble appreciator faced with the genius of our great late joe!

  • @lralbrecht You forgot the amp.

  • @lralbrecht ahh well thats the difference between music and noise isn't it?

  • A master at work here!

  • amaziiing!!!!!!

  • He's so good I could vomit.

  • I was over my head and he was kind. I have always loved Joe's capacity to be musically self sufficient and deeply satisfying, but as an aesthetic approach I needed the bends and vibrato of Hendrix to be comfortable. While I studied with John Cage and learned harmonic theories from this musical Einstein, I needed a simpler approach to harmony and melody to satisfy me. Black American blues met that need. Check out the adjacent video and see what you think.Google Steve Dukes...I'm grateful to Joe.

  • great guitarist

  • El mejor del mundo

  • 5 years ago I was all Hendrix. I worshiped the dude for his guitarp laying. then 2 years passed his stuff got easier and easier to play to the point I got incredibly bored of pentatonics.THen I took a year of theory and sight reading classes and now to this day I don't even listen to hendrix. I am taking advanced music theory and even in a jazz trio. Once I heard joe pass and barney kessel I knew They were the ones My soul longed to play like. Rip Joe.

  • Very nice voicing!

  • Una joya del jazz

  • My fucked up neighbourhood looks so nice suddenly when I listen to joe pass and jog.

  • @mooshimashiroom hahahahahaha...

  • All that AND he doesn't wear a jazz ponytail...

  • This reminds me of the famous Segovia quote: "If they really concentrate, they will hear that the classical guitar is a complete orchestra, though as viewed through the wrong end of a telescope. The sound comes to us from a miniature and more delicate planet than ours. The proportions are the same; the textures clear, the emotions drawn to a natural scale. Everything is smaller, that is all. "

  • I like how people are arguing on this clip. Why do people listen to Pass if not to simply hear jazz at its best? Relax and enjoy . If you don't like this kind of music, then please leave; You are disrupting my concert.

  • So tasty, this is the guitarist ive been looking for!

  • not bad, but not my style of music.

  • the harmony man-è il mio preferito nel bebop blues e in tutti gli standard dacchè lo sentii per la prima volta

  • Whoever that is below saying arguing is a needed step toward knowledge is full of it. Every musical vid on here (especially with the 15 to 30 crowds comments) falls under the "My dad can whip your dad" philosophey, Me I like variety, apparently the new generation likes one thing, and it shows in the music as new music lacks ingreidants history and heart

  • To all the 17-year-olds that hang around youtube watching videos of Linkin' Park or some other horrible band, and think that Kurt Cobain was the greatest guitarist ever: I hope you watch this.

  • @Alembic77Series1 even though i like kurt cobain and nirvana i know that they dont know a thing about music. and dont worry not all teenagers like mainstream crap. im 15 and love joe pass, ted greene, danny gatton, wes montgomery etc. i just wish i could find someone else my age who's into them too haha

  • @Guitarist2095 Haha, don't worry man. Sixteen here, same problem.

  • @Alembic77Series1 lol i don't even listen to all of them i think they are garbage. But hey its good you speaking the Truth!

  • @Alembic77Series1 yes, im just 16 and i love pass and govan, caron, wooten and jaco. they are jazz geniuses

  • @Alembic77Series1 Not all 17 year old kids listen to this LP and Nirvana. Some of them really like jazz too ;)

  • I got to play this tune with Joe in the Great American Music Hall in October 1973. He was very kind to me and didn't stomp me into the ground. It was one of the peak musical experiences of my life and I am grateful for it.

  • @SteveDukesBlues

What a great experience that must have been. Good for you.

  • I got to play this tune with Joe in the Great American Music Hall in October 1973. He was very kind to me and didn't stomp me into the ground. It was one of the peak musical experiences of my life and I am grateful for it.

  • YOU SHALL NOT PASS ;P too awesome

  • The MOST important thing about this playing is that it swings!!! It's the subtle touch and feel that makes the real difference. Of course having a huge vocabulary of chord combinations, tricks and riffs doesn't hurt but too many players have that but not the dance that makes this great.

  • Guitar master.

  • Surely it has been mentioned already, but I love the way how amazing this is and how he still manages to blow the ending!!

  • respect

  • No one surpasses Pass!

  • Joe Pass Pwns My Face.

  • respetos

  • Jimi and Joe were two VERYYYY talented guitarist, BUT NO GUITARIST can be compared, no two players are alike and if you think so you dont understand music. Each guitarist has their own things that make them different. if you actually have a relationship with your instrument you use it as your voice to express things that you dont know how to put into words, Jimi And Joe are just two great players who used their guitars for different paths. And if you think chords aren't expressive your dum
