  • I Think It's Gonnnaaaa Be a Loonnnggg, Loonnnngggg, Tiimmmeeee!!!

  • This reminds me of the era of doing "soul music" versions of pop music hits.Of course, this is not Ray Charles doing the Beatles or Isaac Hayes doing By The Time I Get To Phoenix, but, interestingly, Elton's achingly soulful version of his own tune. The days of doing the soul version of a number had been over a number of years already by 1976 (on the verge of disco instead, sadly), but Sir E's slowing down to gospel tempo and Nigel emphasizing every 8th note with his snare really bring me back.

  • His most soulful--hence his best--rendition of this song EVER! Thanks for posting!

  • Rocketman commercial is the nest

  • sAD sONG

  • Stiil have my programme from the Sheffield UK date!

  • def. extremely talented singer

noun. ELTON JOHN! actually.....words can't describe his talent.

  • First time I saw him perform was in 1976 at Rich Stadium in Buffalo. Rained all day and NOBODY cared!!

  • I hope this version makes obvious how a drummer's perfectly soulful timekeeping lifts even a great, great song by a great, great singer/songwriter into the stratosphere. Listen 'til you get it, everyone.

  • I guess it wouldn't sound right lyrically singing... "I missed his husband?

  • @RamsesReturns elton john did not write the lyrics

  • Great song, I had the good fortune to see him at Tucson in 1984, still had the range. But if any thing his voice is even better now.

  • "Oh, Rocket Man"

  • Ah yes ..Elt at his best ....I saw Elton at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall in 1974 for his Louder than Concorde Tour. I sat 2 rows from the front. What an experience for me as an avid 17 yr old fan. ...Come to think of it ....i still have the ticket stub somewhere.

  • Hell Yea! on, "This is why we love you tube!"

  • Elton's new album The Union, with Leon Russell, is superb, rightly gets 5 stars in Rolling Stone

  • me encanta esta canción....

  • Bernie Taupin Lyrics?

    FUCK AWESOME

Elton John makes me play piano.

    He's AMAZING

  • ainda guardo o ticket deste show no earls court. nesta época eu vivia em londres, capital mundial do rock nos anos 70. grato pelo video, só tinha lembanças desta noite....

  • We're all rocket men, rocket women.

  • Like most artist of this area he put a few good albums then wnet right down the crapper

  • @bj4paul The reason he was better then was because of the extra creativity of his then band, which included Roger Pope (drums) Caleb Quaye (guitar) and Kenny Passarelli (bass) and the albums they helped him create were the best of his career!

  • People deride the 1970's for music not being as creative and inspiring as the 60's but I beg to differ. This is a case in point.

  • @ffairlane57 It is very creative. The fact he sings about being married, when in reality, he is a rocket man(he loves men). He is singing about being in space. I doubt if he has ever been there. Oh, and his kids??? They are now grown and have full time jobs!! Very creative, to say the least. How about some Toto or Journey for more creativity!! Hahahahahaha

  • @theonlytruepunk He didn't write his music. Bernie Taupin has been writing Elton John's lyrics since a long time ago. EJ's ability is to come up with melodies for lyrics completely naturally. Look up his microwave oven manual song to see an example.

  • @awkpidgin I doubt if Bernie ever made it into space either...

  • I graduated from high school in 76 and Elton shaped a nation of teenagers. His music is timeless, I love it, my children LOVE it, my grandchildren will surely love it, and if we are still on this planet I'm sure their children will still love ELTON JOHN! Youtube rocks when visual memories like this can accompany the ones in my mind and can be accessed by the touch of a button.

  • I don't even think about gay at all, when I hear Elton John or Freddie Mercury cause there abilities are just astounding and have provided so many people with so much happiness for years.

  • fuck elton john! psyyyyych! haha he's awesome :) Come check out my rendition of Rocket Man and lemme know if you think I'm awesome too! :)

  • this is great song, but think about how great it would sound knowing you were going into space soon, that would be awesome

  • If you want the 1 hour show,go to 70s-tv click on STAR COMPILATIONS..

  • one year after freedom

  • So much better than the album version. Love the slide guitar, awesome!

  • 3:53 great vocal improv on the chorus. It's all of Elton's greatest voices in under 30 seconds.

  • @kerpital - Thanks for the notice. It is exactly as you say, all of Elton's voices mixed in there. I knew this would be a great version of Rocket Man in the first minute. It just felt so smooth.

  • Awesome...so much better than his later versions....pure and simple...his talent at his best..

  • he's feeling the music

  • high or not, this is still amazing.

  • ELTON SEMPRE ELTON !

  • If the queen likes the queen he's alright by me rock on sir elton

  • 2:16 there's no way he isn't on acid

  • lol. hes high on something

  • its kind of ironic that this song is about elton's involvment with drugs and the guitarist is high

  • Comment removed

  • what? the guitarist?

eitherway ,you can't play thyat good on acid , believe me , i've tried

  • jimi was trippin when he played most of the time

  • probably one of his best performances of the song that is out there - clips like this is why we luv you tube frankly

  • Frankly Sinatra! :D

  • @mackystack17 Agreed. This version is AMAZING!

  • Ive beening playin for 20 years now, and i wish i was as good as him!!!

  • great.

  • My friend and I got front row tickets in las Vegas a couple of years ago and were surprised to find that we were invited on stage to dance around Elton's piano during Saturday's alright of fighting. I still think of that as one of the best experiences of my life.

  • Whn I listen to amazing performances like this I just want to stand up and clap and whistle like I'm actually there.

  • bad audio quality,but

    absolutly

    GREAT

  • I Love Elton John. I saw him live a few years ago. It was awesome!!!

  • hes playing in laramie wyoming tonight... where i live... and im not going to the concert

  • Thats my Dad singing

  • I saw this concert at Belle Vue Manchester. Elton had been at wembley watching Man Ure being beaten 1-0 by Southampton, the drummer Roger Pope was from Southampton, boy did he get a cheer! About half way through there was a bomb scare. We all had to get out pretty damned quick (oh happy days!)

The support was Murray Head, what a fantastic night.

  • gives me goosebumps.....

  • I saw him in Tuscaloosa, AL about a month after this video was made...June of '76. I was 11 years old and seeing this video brings back memories. A few weeks before the concert my I was in the car with my Mom and heard on the radio that someone locally had 3 tickets for sale. Thirty minutes later and she had the tickets. She took me and a neighborhood friend to the show...a 6 hour drive from where we lived. That memory will never die!!

  • LMAO LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL what are you 7?

  • dude sorry

  • It is your duty to believe everything you hear on the internet. This rule applies double to superstition, urban legends and chain letters.

  • thats right 99% statistics are made up

  • makes me wanna go to the space and stay high...

    all day everyday

and have peacefulness away from these mother fuckers tlaking shit about each others country.

just the shut up and listen to elton

  • My son tells me that Elton John is the coolest gay guy in the world and he's not given to comments like that. I must say it surprised me. I've been listening to EJ since he first hit the scene, and I've got to agree with my young'un. Gay or not-it doesn't really matter-the man ROCKS!

  • you sound like a great dad!

  • @oldenuff2know99 I agree- who cares what people are labeling people is pointless..all that matters is their actions- and nobody makes music like all these older people- gay or not..even Freddie Mercury was openly gay- yet an amazing musician too- I think more amazing people need ot show their uniqueness in all ways to prove it doesn't matter what they like they're still great at making music~

  • really excellent stuff! hes just having fun and you can feel it. definitely a song I really identify with always - Love that elton guy!!! woooo

  • Bald is beautiful!

  • Was there, right down front for the July 4th show in Foxboro, MA. WOW - that was a band and a concert for the ages! Only disappointment was that Ray Cooper was ill and not on that part of the tour. Billy Jean King came out to sing Philadephia Freedom. Elton played guitar on Love Song - duet with Cindy Bullens. Davey and Caleb were an awesome guitar duo. Kenny and Roger were a hard driving rhythm section, and James was the "wall of sound" intricately laced throughout. It was quite a night!

  • I wasn't that into Elton John, but went to see Dave Mason open for him on 7/4/76. I remember it was a beautiful night and really enjoyed Elton. Just saw him again at Mohegan Sun, 32 years later with my wife. He still has the voice. And I was a lot more coherent this time. FYI... a few years ago I heard Chris Berman from ESPN reminice about this same concert. Can't forget that date...

  • How about the opening act - John Miles? What a great way to start of a truly memorable night!! Had hitchhiked up from Hartford with a local politician's daughter. She was AWOL. We were picked up by the cops on the way home. Didn't matter - we had just seen a concert for the ages. I remember it like it was yesterday. Thank you Mal for sharing your experience of that night.

  • Is it lonely out in space? An awsome song!!! Elton John rules!

  • I just saw Elton live in concert a month ago, no doubt THE best show I've ever seen..been at Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Rob Zombie, Pearl Jam, Velvet Revolver (twice), Rolling Stones, Tragically Hip (twice),Weird Al Yankovic, Nazareth, The Spin Doctors, ZZ Top, etc.... Elton is a living legend!! Canada rules, the U.S. drools!!

  • USA all the way?! That´s why you are loved all around the globe...Humble pie??

  • USA? You don't even own your country anymore little boy...

  • got em

  • great time in my life......get a doctor you idiots.

  • thats nice, what a tool.

  • LoL

  • me too. my johnsons just dangling.420 8=========>

  • My God, amazing song, beautiful voice... Who cares if he's gay? it still doesn't mess with the quality of his music...

  • Man i'd love to have this man bone me!

  • great song elton. elton john ftw!!

  • wonderful song, powerful voice

  • any one have the family guy version of this song?

  • actually that was a sendup of a william shatner (star trek) version of this song which is even funnier (and sadder)......

you'll find em both on utube

  • He has a collection of over 5,000 glasses. And he's stll making awesome music, bobkauss. =)

  • yes, he is a flaming homosexual. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. He made awesome music.

  • One of his best songs. Thanks for posting this.

  • why u people care if hes gay?

hes like one of the best songwriters evuhh

  • If it is Bernie Taupin you're talking about, then yes, he did write a lot of lyrics for Elton, but Elton always composed the music! That's called a collaboration.

    Get your facts straight!

BTW: Elvis did not write a single one of his Songs... (just like Britney)

  • That's not true!! Bernie Taupin wrote these songs and Elton John wrote the music you idiot! Don't dis Elton! he's a better man then you'll ever be!!

  • In my opinion one of the best songs ever...rock on

  • A nice, simple version of this good song...

  • he is the best of all times )))awesome song and awesome musician ((((hi elton john

  • I love Elton Ive always loved Elton All my life and I will till the day I die. xx

Thanks for posting this video! T

  • i think this song wouldn't be as cool if it didn't have those guitar effects on the chorus.... great song though!!

  • It was just this one song at this point in his life that I really liked.

Those mysteriuos sounding chord changes around the words like "0 hours 9 am." A real cool and different sort of sleek feeling invented there.

  • Yes - his name's Rog. Looking slightly older these days than in the video, but he has some fantastic stories to tell his Grandchildren!!

  • Really, Roger Pope is your father in law? I have gotten to know Caleb Quaye over here in the states. What is Roger doing these days?

  • He is not very well these days - but is still the same Rog. He has been in contact with Caleb but not in the last few years I think. I will ask him.

  • Oh, hi I sent you a separate emai, but now I see this. I am sorry to hear Roger isn't doing well. I will let Caleb know I heard from you. Maybe he can contact Rog. Take care.
