This reminds me of the era of doing "soul music" versions of pop music hits.Of course, this is not Ray Charles doing the Beatles or Isaac Hayes doing By The Time I Get To Phoenix, but, interestingly, Elton's achingly soulful version of his own tune. The days of doing the soul version of a number had been over a number of years already by 1976 (on the verge of disco instead, sadly), but Sir E's slowing down to gospel tempo and Nigel emphasizing every 8th note with his snare really bring me back.
I hope this version makes obvious how a drummer's perfectly soulful timekeeping lifts even a great, great song by a great, great singer/songwriter into the stratosphere. Listen 'til you get it, everyone.
Ah yes ..Elt at his best ....I saw Elton at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall in 1974 for his Louder than Concorde Tour. I sat 2 rows from the front. What an experience for me as an avid 17 yr old fan. ...Come to think of it ....i still have the ticket stub somewhere.
ainda guardo o ticket deste show no earls court. nesta época eu vivia em londres, capital mundial do rock nos anos 70. grato pelo video, só tinha lembanças desta noite....
@bj4paul The reason he was better then was because of the extra creativity of his then band, which included Roger Pope (drums) Caleb Quaye (guitar) and Kenny Passarelli (bass) and the albums they helped him create were the best of his career!
@ffairlane57 It is very creative. The fact he sings about being married, when in reality, he is a rocket man(he loves men). He is singing about being in space. I doubt if he has ever been there. Oh, and his kids??? They are now grown and have full time jobs!! Very creative, to say the least. How about some Toto or Journey for more creativity!! Hahahahahaha
@theonlytruepunk He didn't write his music. Bernie Taupin has been writing Elton John's lyrics since a long time ago. EJ's ability is to come up with melodies for lyrics completely naturally. Look up his microwave oven manual song to see an example.
I graduated from high school in 76 and Elton shaped a nation of teenagers. His music is timeless, I love it, my children LOVE it, my grandchildren will surely love it, and if we are still on this planet I'm sure their children will still love ELTON JOHN! Youtube rocks when visual memories like this can accompany the ones in my mind and can be accessed by the touch of a button.
I don't even think about gay at all, when I hear Elton John or Freddie Mercury cause there abilities are just astounding and have provided so many people with so much happiness for years.
@kerpital - Thanks for the notice. It is exactly as you say, all of Elton's voices mixed in there. I knew this would be a great version of Rocket Man in the first minute. It just felt so smooth.

Hey all, There's a great version of this song done by The Competition on youtube. You should all check it out if you like this song you won't be disappointed!! It's excellent!! It's in my favourites!!!
I saw this concert at Belle Vue Manchester. Elton had been at wembley watching Man Ure being beaten 1-0 by Southampton, the drummer Roger Pope was from Southampton, boy did he get a cheer! About half way through there was a bomb scare. We all had to get out pretty damned quick (oh happy days!)
The support was Murray Head, what a fantastic night.
I saw him in Tuscaloosa, AL about a month after this video was made...June of '76. I was 11 years old and seeing this video brings back memories. A few weeks before the concert my I was in the car with my Mom and heard on the radio that someone locally had 3 tickets for sale. Thirty minutes later and she had the tickets. She took me and a neighborhood friend to the show...a 6 hour drive from where we lived. That memory will never die!!

My son tells me that Elton John is the coolest gay guy in the world and he's not given to comments like that. I must say it surprised me. I've been listening to EJ since he first hit the scene, and I've got to agree with my young'un. Gay or not-it doesn't really matter-the man ROCKS!
@oldenuff2know99 I agree- who cares what people are labeling people is pointless..all that matters is their actions- and nobody makes music like all these older people- gay or not..even Freddie Mercury was openly gay- yet an amazing musician too- I think more amazing people need ot show their uniqueness in all ways to prove it doesn't matter what they like they're still great at making music~
Was there, right down front for the July 4th show in Foxboro, MA. WOW - that was a band and a concert for the ages! Only disappointment was that Ray Cooper was ill and not on that part of the tour. Billy Jean King came out to sing Philadephia Freedom. Elton played guitar on Love Song - duet with Cindy Bullens. Davey and Caleb were an awesome guitar duo. Kenny and Roger were a hard driving rhythm section, and James was the "wall of sound" intricately laced throughout. It was quite a night!
I wasn't that into Elton John, but went to see Dave Mason open for him on 7/4/76. I remember it was a beautiful night and really enjoyed Elton. Just saw him again at Mohegan Sun, 32 years later with my wife. He still has the voice. And I was a lot more coherent this time. FYI... a few years ago I heard Chris Berman from ESPN reminice about this same concert. Can't forget that date...
How about the opening act - John Miles? What a great way to start of a truly memorable night!! Had hitchhiked up from Hartford with a local politician's daughter. She was AWOL. We were picked up by the cops on the way home. Didn't matter - we had just seen a concert for the ages. I remember it like it was yesterday. Thank you Mal for sharing your experience of that night.
I just saw Elton live in concert a month ago, no doubt THE best show I've ever seen..been at Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Rob Zombie, Pearl Jam, Velvet Revolver (twice), Rolling Stones, Tragically Hip (twice),Weird Al Yankovic, Nazareth, The Spin Doctors, ZZ Top, etc.... Elton is a living legend!! Canada rules, the U.S. drools!!

Yes - his name's Rog. Looking slightly older these days than in the video, but he has some fantastic stories to tell his Grandchildren!!

Really, Roger Pope is your father in law? I have gotten to know Caleb Quaye over here in the states. What is Roger doing these days?

He is not very well these days - but is still the same Rog. He has been in contact with Caleb but not in the last few years I think. I will ask him.

Oh, hi I sent you a separate emai, but now I see this. I am sorry to hear Roger isn't doing well. I will let Caleb know I heard from you. Maybe he can contact Rog. Take care.

No hair, OK, but pls, NO rug, weave or perpetual hat wearing. At least Halford adopted the shaved head look, facing baldness.
