in that war, the men who were killed in action are the real heros who gave there lives for there country from united states to soviet russia. i salute those who lived or died in ww2.
FDR is reciting a prayer written by Stephen Vincent Benét for the recently established United Nations (a joke now, but promising then) on 14th June, 1942. That was Flag Day in the United States.
Lots of us feel that way. Its just these word have the greatest meaning when it's said under circumstances like these.by the way, for those of you who think highly of the NATZI's, imagine the KKK rising to power in the US or those disgusting Russian thugs running the Kremlin. That's NATZI's in Germany.
It is to bad he did not live to see the end of the war, he likely would have agreed with Churchill's "Operation Unthinkable", so the eastern block, including Russia, would probably be a strong st world ally.
You rarely hear such words today. This speech, whether the speaker meant it or not, in one minute made me feel like i could be apart of something greater than myself; something WORTH fighting for.
Stop with the political opinions. The EU won't unravel, the big nations will simply force the smaller states to adhere to certain principles. The PIGS will have to abandon this gov funded safety nets and policy of socialism that have bankrupted them. Their leaders were clueless to what major corp would do to their nations (come in, exploit them, and rip them off) America has maybe worse problems, just a different dynamic (class warfare, instead of nation state ideological warfare)
It is a shame that the world does not actually think the way that is spoken in this speech. "if one hungers we all hunger" that's just some made up bullshit for some prick to be remembered. What did those same people do just a few years after this, oh they double crossed the Palestinians and sanctioned the state of Israel. Nice one yeah, and have they actually tried to rectify it, NO, they put up smoke screens of peace talks, just more bullshit to make another prick be remembered. Meaningless!
@experimentpromo - Do you know what drew England into WWII? HItler's invasion of Poland. Then guess what? England (Churchill) gave all of Eastern Europe to Stalin at the war's end in 1945, including Poland. At that time, many Islamic countries worked with Hitler. As far as I'm concerned, too bad for Palenstinians. They should have worked together w/the Jews and built it together. Today, they can't even run the part they control and still want Israel to provide them with water/sanitation.
@experimentpromo - This speech was inspirational. I'm sorry you fail to realize the greatness of western enlightment which is embodied in the U.S. Constitution . You are the kind of person who thinks - 'If the U.S. isn't perfect, then it is not good.' Very naive.
@socalcraigster To suggest that international governing bodies would always be dominated by some hegemonic power is as ridiculous as suggesting that all democracies will turn into fascist dictatorships. The UN is a terrible example of internationalism at work. I don't wish to argue the merits of internationalism and free trade on YouTube, though.
@DokkyDok - I did not suggest that it "always" is the case but it has occurred rather routinely throughout history. Can you provide examples of "international bodies" not dominated in such a way? National self-interest trumps "internationalism" everytime. Some salient examples - divisions between countries like Germany & Greece are causing the EU to unravel, France's leading the charge to remove the Libyan dictator.
@socalcraigster I have come to think about this as well. Self-interests trumps idealism everytime.. but idealism shapes interests over time. We only see change in the span of a lifetime and beyond.
great speech you gotta think almost every one was fighting germany and we were on their side at first but then we double crossed them cause we thought we would be taken over so in my behalf i do not think hitler was a bad man i do not think anyone was bad besides the jap's cause they dishonored their self bye attacking us when no one knew it was coming
@liltwix96 Dude... What about the People Hitler put in camps, Hitler started the war, Though, your right in saying no one was completely Righteous, but some were more Righteous then others
The one thing I don't agree with is when people say stuff like "oh if it wasnt for America everyone would be screwed". I find these comments very ignorant....It is called a team effort...Russia, America, Britain and even those who rebelled against Hitler even the Polish and the German officials involved in Valkyrie were fighting TOGETHER. We all fought an one and worked together to eliminate the evil that plagued the world. Im an American, but I honor all who fell that fought for what is right.
Roosevelt was a great speaker just like Churchill, "A Day that will live in Infamy" how can you beat that? I especially liked the video and tears came to my eyes at seeing the flag raised on Iwo Jima. My late father was on Iwo and saw both flag raisings. I still have his dog tag on my key chain. He was infantry replacement and laid cable for field telephones for forwar observation for 155 mm howitzers, the island was so small howitzers could reach anywhere
Amazign speech, i just wish kids now in days could learn more about FDR... this kids dont have any respect or any idea what our soldiers went through for us to have our freedom.. Kids now in days should have a reality check..
I used to think John F. Kennedy gave the most moving speeches but these have to be the greatest compilation or words spoken in the history of the world. I have never been so moved by one man's words. Yes, yes Thank you FDR and I wish my generation had a man like you to lead us out of this current nightmare.
This just blows your mind. Whether FDR actually meant what he said, or whether he didnt.. It does not matter. What matters is the essence of his words, it's mind boggling. One for mankind hey...
every single one of those crosses equals a life taken.....but just how much did we lose?? think about it, any of those lives could have been future singers, authors, poets, sport players, scientists, inventors, politicians....and anything in between.....war destroys parts of our potential future....which parts??? we may never know.
@qwirberbil war also forces us to open our eyes to the atrocities around us. it is sad that it cost us that much but the lessons learned hardest are the ones the stick the longest.
bravo you are a total idiot. More people have been slaughtered "In the name of God" then for any other reason. This speech is all about faith in mankind to be good. It has nothing to do with "God" ( I don't believe). However it should be noted that many of these idealistic views FDR shares came from his Christian headmaster who believed life should be lived helping those less unfortunate
This is by far the best passage I have ever heard. The video is pretty incredible too, with the graveyard in the end as a symbol for those honestly giving their life to make the world a better place
MARCH towards the clean world our hands can make. yeah baby!
We have a God that has and desires the same ideas of Franklin D. Roosevelt, he desires for all men to be saved by his son and come into a knowledge of him. He desires like Franklin to have a world that lives in peace and love with each other, these ideas however were from God that Franklin not from Franklin...but these ideas Franklin was encouraged by God to share with the world.
@bravo45th who the fuck cares where it came from or who said it, all that truely matters is the meaning of the words. If you must know this was a prayer written by Stephen Vincent Benet
So powerful. Type in Mount Legend on iTunes to find the soundtracks for the series. I could watch this series so many times, never gets old.
