In my opinion, the best breeds for police/military work, personal protection, Schutzhund, PSA, French Ring, etc. are the man stoppers (Dobermann, Rottweiler, Beauceron, Dutch Shepherd Dog, German Shepherd Dog, Belgian Malinois, etc.). The man stoppers are more loyal, obedient, protective, and socially dominant than breeds such as the Airedale Terrier, Giant Schnauzer, Bouvier des Flandres, Kerry Blue Terrier, the bully breeds, etc.
this video doesnt even begin to describe the greatness that is the Bouvier, also, i dont know about the U.S., but here in the Netherlands their ears and tail are no longer being cut, which in my opinion is a good thing, i like the hanging ears much more then the spikey ones, and offcourse no more unnescesary (forgive my poor english) puppy abuse, although the long tail took some getting used to. And i agree with bank80, popularity only creates inbred dogs with health issues...
@cwooley89 it gives them a less fierce and agressive look i think , before our current Bouv we had one like yours, floppy ears with short tail, and although im all about not cutting things off, i must say i like them the most like that :p the one we have now has a tail, and it really wasnt the tail i was expecting somehow, its very curly haha, it didnt fit right in my mental picture, but i love em all the same ;)
i have two bouviers, two girls, the oldest is lucy whos 8years old she has fawn fur and the youngest is sadie whos 1 years old and she has black fur with some white fur comming in. My parents, brother and i love them very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My first bouvier was scruffy who was put to sleep when he was 9 years old cause he had a lot of health issues when he was a pup. his fur was kind of like sadie's fur now, black fur with white fur comming in

I grew up with a Bouvier. She was a 7 year old retired police dog when my parents got her. I was one year old at the time. Apart from the Rottweiler we got later on, we have never had such a gentle and protective dog. And unlike the Rottweiler, the Bouvier aged really well. She remained alert while our Rottie started suffering from loss of sight, smell and hearing once she reached 10 years. Knikker the Bouvier lived to be 16 years old, a good age for a big dog. The Rottie is 12 years now.
Anyone who has ever owned a Bouvier knows that they are one of the best breeds possible. They are the epitome of the phrase "Gentle Giants" but are also extremely conscious of strangers.
I lost my Bouvier around a month ago. Not having him greet me with his great bark and his loving pushes as I walk in the door is one of the hardest things that I've ever had to get over. We weren't too creative with his naming, and called him Flanders.
Its a shame that such an amazing breed is still so unknown
@nobillygreen I'm so sorry for your loss! I've had a Bouvier too. He was 15, when I lost him. The best dog I could ever have. I loved him so much, I didn't get another one. I just know, that no other dog will ever replace him. I probably need a couple of more years to think about getting another dog. I'm just not ready yet. I got him, when he was 7 weeks old. It took only 2 weeks for him and he was fully housebroken. He was very smart, loyal, always wanted to please, protctive. My Fuzzy :-(
@nobillygreen Trust me, its a good thing that this breed is relatively unknown. It's not a shame at all. For anyone thinking about buying one of these dogs, please beware of the fawn, light colored bouvs and people that breed them to be oversized. Also, bouvs can be a real handful and are a dominant dog. As they say, they are not for inexperienced dog owners or for people who don't have time to take care of the high maintenance coat.
Great dogs, I had family members who owned a Bouvier, they would always tell how the dogs would instinctly walk between bodies of water and children, in order to protect them.
That's just *SAD*!! At :45, the dog can't even maintain a grip on an Outer Arm bite, while being worked In Prey Drive?!?! -That's NO Protection Bouvier! I'm not saying that the owner shouldn't love her show-bred Pet, but it makes me sad that THIS is what Animal Planet chose to represent the spirit of the old KNPV/Police & Protection Bouvier.
great video, My Bouv - Gretchen she is 2 yrs, She is protective of yard and us, but not too many people are around us on a regular basis. We have found that certain people when they turn there back to her as in walking away. She will go after them, only on one occasion she bit a friend in the butt. But he entered the house when we were not at home. I think he was lucky that was all she did. I love this breed and consider it the most human like dog I have ever owned.
Actually heard that the main reason that they almost went extinct as a breed during WWII was because Hitler pout a bounty on their heads because He thought it was an affront that Bouvier's were tougher then their pride of the Rikes dog
@Templarzealot89 I would think that if Hitler was afraid of any tough French dog it would be the Great Pyrenees. My Pyre is the biggest dog I have seen in real life, she is huge, has 2-3 inches of fur, it works like armor when she play fights our German Shepherd, our GSD can't even hurt her.
everybody speeks about all of the good qualitys, but never mention their inteligence. this is without a doubt the smartest breed I have ever been around. We are on our 2nd ,our first lived to be 15 years old. We now have a 12 week old! I cant say enough about the Bouvier..love them ..love them!!
I had a bouvier that lived to be 10. She was great. Very well-mannered. Very well-behaved. Very intelligent - she knew many words. Hypo-thyroid though - watch out for that. She was protective but not overly so; I never had to put her away when company was over. It was funny how she didn't like strangers petting her. She would just step out of the way. It took me a long time to see it wasn't just coincidence. I am ready for another. Who has pups?
I met my Bouvier girl Sasha around 3 yrs. ago, she was neglected sad, lonely and I thought with tears in my eyes the most miserable dog I had ever met. Lucky for us her so called owner abandoned her and before I knew it Sasha had "chosen" me and I was in love. So I researched the breed and learned we were a match and within a minute we were like an old married couple!
I have had dogs my entire life and loved them all but the Bouvier is a very special breed & I am now a devoted fan for good!
i have a Bouvier! his name is Axeleration! but Axel for short:P but we only call him axel..he is a grey/blonde/black brindle and is 2 years old. he is the best dog ever and we are going to breed him and his puppie's name will be Nitro :D
I have 3 of them and they are really great dogs to have. My oldest one saved my sister's life when she went to get a ball from across the street from my house in incoming traffic, Kayla (my oldest) pulled my sister from the street about 2 seconds before a car came. They are good dogs but they are also fluffy! I spend hours on just doing hair alone!
the way he says bouvier des flandres is really funny ........ oh wait the way he says everything is really funny like when he says boooooouvs sounds like boooobs
