The only bit that does is the guitar solo towards the end when he slides down the fretboard at the start and then uses some effects pedal (maybe wawa not sure).

I think Nirvana's performance is much more of an FU because they actually convinced TOTP to let them sing live and it is the funniest thing in the entire universe. Kurt totally screws with the singing as they very clearly fake playing their instruments. Nirvana was such a force at the time that TOTP caved because Kurt refused to go on unless they could at least sing live. But this is funny too.

September 26th 1991 was the final Top of the Pops - at the time - to be broadcast from Broadcasting House. This was also the final show in which most of the acts mimed - with the exception of Rozalla and Sabrina Johnston. The following week - October 3rd - was the "year zero" relaunch, from Elstree - in which producer Stanley Appel insisted that ALL acts, from then on, would have to sing live. This continued until Ric Blaxill became producer in February 1994....

Blur's "There's No Other Way" was taken from April 1991 - hence the miming rule being in force then. Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was broadcast November 1991, during the live vocal rule.

Bit anoracky, I know, but as a very big TOTP fan of the 90's (and someone who still has most of the shows on VHS), I think you'll find the above to be pretty accurate.

Your date is right so I don't doubt the accuracy of your statement. Nirvana lore has two different versions of the tale and I was unaware of that. The other version is Kurt did get pissed because they couldn't play their instruments live and because of that he did his vocals "like Morrissey" (his description of the singing) and being very obvious amount pretending to play their instruments.
