is it just me or does his guitar sound a little out of tune at certain points...he's so amazing as a guitarist to still be able to play so well despite tunung issues
Guthrie man, if you were out in the early 80's you would've been known today as the greatest of all time and are even still considered to be.....ABSOLUTE LEGEND
@luvmypit83 oh dear, Guthrie isn't hyped hes just incredibly talented and jealous egotistical people like you justify the fact you cant play very well by putting other talented individuals down
@luvmypit83 Actually, if you watch all of his videos, and note that he can play in just about every style thats invented, and do it equally as good or better than successful artists in that genre. If you can absorb that, then you will realize he actually TECHNICALLY is the greatest guitarist of all time. Possibly the only thing I haven't seen him own is flamenco.
Having said that, playing guitar is always two sided. I can't say I think he will ever be a composer that changes the world.
@mike Prefer who you wish, but technique's another matter: You may hate his music, but no one's technically better than Scotty. McKee's too individualistic to even judge technically. All he plays is "McKee Music". How could he be less than perfect at -that-? Scotty can play anything. Give him a day's notice,& he'd be ready to play McKee's stuff . Only contest McKee wins: His own open-tuning, new-age music, . Every other style he doesn't even show up.
@lazur1 Agree. Scotty Anderson is a terrifying guitarist who I believe can play absolutely anything if he tried. His Jumpin at the Woodside video I think is the single greatest diaplay of guitar technique I've yet seen on YouTube. Even the great Greg Howe in an interview from a couple of years ago was saying Scotty is the most talented guitarist he's ever heard. Now that's a compliment !
If you like this video, I'd urge you to check out some Scotty Anderson. He's one of the most talented guitarists around, and his right hand technique is simply extraterrestrial.. And the speed is pretty much unmatched. Take a look at 'Jumpin' At The Woodside' for starters. Terrifying ! A real guitarist's guitarist.
@drdranem17 - Nothing to do with the place, it's simply cuz it's country sounding, and that title sounds like the cartoon Rooster Rhode island red. It's a joke ;)
My first guess at who Guthrie might have "imitated" would have been Albert Lee, maybe the Hellecasters or even Brad Paisley or Geg Koch.....never heard Morse play like that but I'm sure he can:)
@Moviegod37 faster doesn´t mean better , i think he is a great guitar player but i prefer others musicians in that style , like tony rice for example.
That damn 3 finger style....I don't see how he does it! He doesn't use that pinky unless he absolutely has to, and he still shreds faster than I can. Hell, Guthrie shreds better with 3 fingers than I could with 7 or 8, but that goes for most of us lesser beings I think.
Becker, Lane, Gilbert... All great. But my fave is definitely Guthrie. He's just getting started and still getting better. Amazing future ahead of him. There's another version of this song performed in Spain that was recently uploaded here on YT. Check it out. It's faster and even more amazing than this one.
ok i took it a different way but yea your def right on that i cant wait to hear his future stuff ive already listened to erotic cakes like 500 times lol.
Shredding wise, I'd say that Paul gilbert is at the same level, maybe even a bit more extreme. Though I like Guthrie more, I don't care who can play the fastest.
"But it's possible for virtually anyone to get this good if you have the following three things: 1) lots of desire for guitar and music (and above most other things in your life), 2) lots of time to practice (hours a day for years), and 3) good tutoring and information (guitarprinciples[dot]com will help with that)."
wrong. technical/musical ability is at least in part a product of various genetic factors in addition to practice/dedication.
If I may point out? It's entirely possible for a reasonably healthy individual to reach these sorts of speeds and attain technical virtuosity of this kind of ilk. Yes, genetics is a factor, but a very small one and can be entirely overcome with enough practice.
definitely wrong in my opinion!! i know plenty of people who play all the time and work reaL hard and are very mediocre! i think natural ability is a huge huge factor!
Oh? First of all playing is entirely different from practicing. Just playing will not make you a good guitarist, unless like Yngwie, your playing resembles more closely to that of practice rather than noodling.
Natural ability is a huge factor if you don't really, really love music, but as Steve Vai had said, he had to work really hard at it; he felt others naturally progressed faster than him. Steve Vai was practicing 10 - 16 hours a day for years. Do the people you know do this?
...Quality of practice is of course important too. Most people, naturally, do not know how to practice effectively and intelligently. I've personally heard of people who have gotten things like carpal tunnel syndrome and had to stop playing.
Ney Mello and Jamie Andreas (virtuosos in their own right) who are also master guitar teachers, say they think anyone in a salubrious condition can reach the level of mastery they wish.
...If one wasn't born naturally gifted with a high degree of physical intelligence to allow them to easily create what they need to, then a master teacher is needed to show the way. This includes a lot practice too; experts say around 10,000 hours.
The human body is remarkable. I think people take it for granted. What it is capable of is staggering. Such a task to play like Guthrie is easy for the body, per se, if the nervous system has been trained sufficiently.
If it's fast muscle twitch you had in mind, the body is perfectly capable as it is to perform as such high speeds. It's the economy of motion that is more preeminent than speed, at least at first. The hands don't really need to go *all that fast*, once the economy of motion is down. Certainly speed can be trained for too, as Bruce Lee found out in the martial arts.
A plethora of knowledge master!! Just read the book Effortless Mastery By kenny Werner for more on this topic.. I also heard the book freeplay is goot too.... but also guthrie has been doing it for a mighty long time! I've been playing for just around 5 years and can't wait to get a couple more years of effective practice under my belt.... Cheers!!!
yeah now think of it this way, if the guys that progressed naturally faster than steve vai practiced as much as he did they would reach a whole other level above vai.
My point is, yeah you can be good at guitar even if your not naturally talented but a naturally talented person that practices as much as you is always gonna be better.
But it's possible for virtually anyone to get this good if you have the following three things: 1) lots of desire for guitar and music (and above most other things in your life), 2) lots of time to practice (hours a day for years), and 3) good tutoring and information (guitarprinciples[dot]com will help with that).
What about perfect pitch? You don't need perfect pitch to get that good on a technical level. Although perfect pitch IS very beneficial to becoming a completely free musician - which is an ability which can indeed be developed, despite the common misconceptions and nescience of the subject.
I didn't just say "dedication", I said "lots of desire" and above most other things in one's life. But going by the term "dedication", it would depend on HOW MUCH dedication!
I wouldn't say "free", with the exception of Mr. Govan, most people with perfect pitch aren't willing to experiment as much. I don't really know why I was talking so arrogantly but I do agree with you.
Well it definitely helps to becoming more free as a musician, but as you say, most people aren't willing to experiment as much. But the potential is indeed there if they so choose to utilise it!
From what I've heard perfect pitch can be a hinderence - in baroque music, for example, where A is just below 440Hz, everything sounds slightly "off" and relatively pitching becomes difficult. However I imagine this is out of context :)
Don't get me wrong - he's an insanely good guitarist :)
Well, that has more to do with the person than the ability. Some musicians can be a little...hum...mellowdramatic, shall we say? ;) It never bothered Jimi Hendrix when he played his guitar that kept going out of tune. When you have PP, you learn by feel that there is a "range" of what A can sound like, like there is a range of what red looks like. Even if it doesn't abide to standard concert pitch.
Now I must return to practice. I have already done 8 hours today! Have a nice day :)
*Giggles*. I've only practiced 4 hours today, but I'm taking a rest today and had to organise some things. My full practice schedule is for 11 hours xD Soon to be following it every day for hopefully 2 or 3 years ^^
Hmm. I am indeed being veracious. I have written pages and pages of all my practice schedules and time spent practicing and what I practiced on my account on 43Things (I can link you if you are interested).
Well, Steve Vai practiced 10 - 15 hours a day. Yngwie would sometimes stay up for two days practicing and then fall asleep with his guitar! Zakk Wylde practiced 12 - 16 hours a day and often almost collapsed at school the next day!
The body needs rest, but you can develop stamina :)
Sure, there's a limit to what a person can achieve on guitar. But, it wouldn't really matter too much because so much can be achieved and enough for virtually anyone to be at a stage of complete artistic expression.
heh if zakk wylde practiced 24/7 he still wouldn't be better than a seagull at guitar. Stupid things ...all pecking away randomly and shit...
Anyhow I get what you're saying but... it's a bit different to what I am meaning. I say haven't you ever for even a moment wished to see what perfection actually looks like? Are we really completely content to just forever make do with that which was conceived from within the boundaries of what we already know is possible? I wanna see the unseen ...now!!
Oh yes, I have been obsessed with perfection since an early age, you see. Turns out Siddhartha Gautama was deluded, as were all the so-called "enlightened masters". Try Actual Freedom (Google is your friend here) ;)
Well then LighteningStrat... I look forward to seeing the fruits of your intrepid endeavor. I too am a traveller seeking perfection. I have realised that not only is it possible..... it MUST be possible. ...as I have seen and heard it. And it made me become alive. I don't want actual freedom. I want perfection. Both very different things!
Just AWESOME! This guy is just unbelievable. It's hard to enough to master just one style but Guthrie has mastered nearly a dozen: rock, shred, blues, country, fusion, jazz, funk, pop, metal, etc...

Have a nice day :)

heh .... shouldn't you be practising?! Get back to it bwoi!! ;)

*Giggles*. I've only practiced 4 hours today, but I'm taking a rest today and had to organise some things. My full practice schedule is for 11 hours xD Soon to be following it every day for hopefully 2 or 3 years ^^
Ah, but we are digressing!

lol. yeah sure... I believe you LightningStrat ;) .. you reminded me of something I too might have once declared that's all.
True Guthrie is ridiculously good. Just makes me wonder what the human limit is ... or even if there IS one?
nicemutant 2 years ago

LightningStrat 2 years ago
heh if zakk wylde practiced 24/7 he still wouldn't be better than a seagull at guitar.
I wanna see the unseen ...now!!
nicemutant 2 years ago
