  • oh my Jesus ,

  • is it just me or does his guitar sound a little out of tune at certain points...he's so amazing as a guitarist to still be able to play so well despite tunung issues

  • watch?v=KZJKPLo32aE&feature=related

  • Looks like Jesus, plays like God. ...Divine!!

  • @alextw13jf Indeed, the trinity: God, Jesus and Guthrie.

  • If MY earliest memory was of holding a guitar, perhaps I could also play this well

  • Am I the only one getting a sort of Benny Hill vibe from this? I think this would make some awesome chase music! XD

    Oh, and this guy's a genius. :)

  • :[ ]

  • I can masturbate to this.

  • 1:41 "see, jesus? I pwn YOU"

  • albert lee who? just sayin'... ;-)

  • HOLD ON BOYS AND GIRLS!!!!

  • Guthrie man, if you were out in the early 80's you would've been known today as the greatest of all time and are even still considered to be.....ABSOLUTE LEGEND

  • @jembrannan He was known, but he wasn't American.

  • GUITAR JESUS

  • This guy is not all that he is hyped up to be... Good? Yes. Amazing? No.

  • @luvmypit83 Somebodies always a critic, you probably can't play green day, let alone this.

Post a video of your best playing, and who YOU consider to be the best...? Look forward to seeing it. lol

  • @luvmypit83 you're kidding right?

  • @luvmypit83 oh dear, Guthrie isn't hyped hes just incredibly talented and jealous egotistical people like you justify the fact you cant play very well by putting other talented individuals down

  • @luvmypit83 Actually, if you watch all of his videos, and note that he can play in just about every style thats invented, and do it equally as good or better than successful artists in that genre. If you can absorb that, then you will realize he actually TECHNICALLY is the greatest guitarist of all time. Possibly the only thing I haven't seen him own is flamenco.

Having said that, playing guitar is always two sided. I can't say I think he will ever be a composer that changes the world.

  • @Billbill80s Speaking of flamenco, he said he is saving classical guitar for prison, lawl

  • @mike52387 Totally different guitarists, both the best at what they do. Can't really compare. And anyway, its not a contest.

  • @proteoid haha i highly agree.

  • @mike Prefer who you wish, but technique's another matter: You may hate his music, but no one's technically better than Scotty. McKee's too individualistic to even judge technically. All he plays is "McKee Music". How could he be less than perfect at -that-? Scotty can play anything. Give him a day's notice,& he'd be ready to play McKee's stuff . Only contest McKee wins: His own open-tuning, new-age music, . Every other style he doesn't even show up.

  • @lazur1 Agree. Scotty Anderson is a terrifying guitarist who I believe can play absolutely anything if he tried. His Jumpin at the Woodside video I think is the single greatest diaplay of guitar technique I've yet seen on YouTube. Even the great Greg Howe in an interview from a couple of years ago was saying Scotty is the most talented guitarist he's ever heard. Now that's a compliment !

  • play on words i.e Rhode Island Red, a chicken, hence the chcken pickin' style. And boy what a style! Our Guthrie is THE man!

  • anyone know why this is called "rhode island shred" ? just curious...

  • holy shit

  • yalooking for some fun if you know what i mean just msg meh

  • If you like this video, I'd urge you to check out some Scotty Anderson. He's one of the most talented guitarists around, and his right hand technique is simply extraterrestrial.. And the speed is pretty much unmatched. Take a look at 'Jumpin' At The Woodside' for starters. Terrifying ! A real guitarist's guitarist.

  • Ya...I should have that down by oh around.......never! Holy shit.

  • damn awesome playing

reminded me alot of Andy Timmons' "Farmer Sez," except that Guthrie did his thing and turned it into something completely different

  • so why is this named the Rhode Island song?

  • @drdranem17 - Nothing to do with the place, it's simply cuz it's country sounding, and that title sounds like the cartoon Rooster Rhode island red. It's a joke ;)

  • eu queria tocar assim:(

  • yippie, a Suhr superstrat sounding like Tele - some sweet playin' here

  • hes too good

  • I REALLY like this guys playing!!!!

  • What a funny melody between 0:46 - 0:54 . :)

    Awesome

  • @SkankingKyle

its a jokey show piece. look at the mans other stuff, or better yet, since you like rap, look up the work hes done with Dizzee Rascal...

  • @SkankingKyle you think rapping is music? fuck you

  • don't be close minded. Just because we don't like rap doesn't mean it isn't music.

  • @SkankingKyle You don't know anything about music you fucking ignorant piece of shit

  • if you don't enjoy it don't write negative comments

  • @SkankingKyle as long as it's oldschool rap. All this new shit is just Retards Attempting Poetry

  • hmm, are you turning into an aboriginal redneck? Cody

  • Tremendous and fluid playing. I loved it.

  • is it me or does 1:00 to 1:04 sound like "whoikee,whoikee,whoikee.."??

  • WTF? Holy shit. Amazing.

  • My first guess at who Guthrie might have "imitated" would have been Albert Lee, maybe the Hellecasters or even Brad Paisley or Geg Koch.....never heard Morse play like that but I'm sure he can:)

  • This would make Morse proud. After all imitation is the highest form of flattery. I wonder if GG can play the classical guitar? Nice work G!

  • money

  • Such a cool song, guthrie is so modest about his skills aswell, found a tab of the first 50 bars, gonna try learn it

  • Could you email that to me, please?

  • fking monster

  • UR a fucking monster :<

  • Banjo on Electric Guitar clever!

  • hiiiiiiihaaaaa

  • BAR FIGHT!!!!!!

Cant hear this without picturing a Dukes of hazzard style chair across the teeth bar fight. Awsome stuff!

  • YEEEEHAAA!!!

  • this makes me wanna kill myself lol

  • learn it by the time you have it down your guitar skills will be incredible

  • that makes me sick watching that. . . he is just too good. . . lucky he seems like a nice guy!

  • 1:42 'thank you god for these awesome powers!!!'

  • HAHAHAHA u read his mind XD

  • holy shiat that guy is a fricking god!!!!!!!!

  • he is a true master and genious!

  • I swear, he can take any style, and learn to play it 5 X better than the guys who are renowned for playing in that style. Guthrie is just ridiculous.

  • he is the master of everything

  • guthrie i meant

  • @Moviegod37 well he can play it 5 times faster

  • @Moviegod37 faster doesn´t mean better , i think he is a great guitar player but i prefer others musicians in that style , like tony rice for example.

  • lol,noob.

  • hahaha stupid comment but funny

  • hillbilly pitch shifting for the fucking win LOL

  • yes, when he starts to use whammy pedal,it always amazes me and cracks me up at the same time

    GUTHRIE IS GOD!!!!!!!!

  • uff increible !!!!

  • That damn 3 finger style....I don't see how he does it! He doesn't use that pinky unless he absolutely has to, and he still shreds faster than I can. Hell, Guthrie shreds better with 3 fingers than I could with 7 or 8, but that goes for most of us lesser beings I think.

  • a 1.29min sbaglia una pennata ahahah daiii govan!!!!!

  • no wonder he can't ride a bicycle

  • everytime i hear him play there's something exciting going on and he's a funny guy as well

  • This man is amazing ! So brilliant in every style he plays...

  • Guthrie saved shred.

  • lol this just makes me feel inferior in every way hahah. Guthrie rocks!!

  • HEAVY METAL JESUS

  • My head cant stop moving to this jam. And a delicious jam it is.

  • Becker, Lane, Gilbert... All great. But my fave is definitely Guthrie. He's just getting started and still getting better. Amazing future ahead of him. There's another version of this song performed in Spain that was recently uploaded here on YT. Check it out. It's faster and even more amazing than this one.

  • hes just getting started? hes been playing for over 3 decades lol

  • Yes, but hes only becoming well known now. he has a full career before him now

  • ok i took it a different way but yea your def right on that i cant wait to hear his future stuff ive already listened to erotic cakes like 500 times lol.

  • JESUS !

  • I checked his instructional books the other day (creative guitar 1 and 2.) They're really good! Nothing's explained theory more clearly.

  • Awesome!!!

    Perfect tone,Great technique!

  • perfect guitarist ...perfect combination of technique taste and just plain knowledge of music and the guitar

  • Does he tape the tabs to the ceiling? ;-)

  • he's the cleanest shredder on earth who knos anyone better say

  • Jason Becker, well I wouldnt say that hes better but just about the same level.

  • He would be better till now . If only life was not such bitch...

  • jason becker IMO is was the best

  • Shawn Lane

  • Shawn lane is about the only guy I think of who might be cleaner. I agree.

  • Shredding wise, I'd say that Paul gilbert is at the same level, maybe even a bit more extreme. Though I like Guthrie more, I don't care who can play the fastest.

  • well i think Paul is the ultimate pattern player. But Guthrie is on a whole new level

  • t - a - l - e - n - t

  • i'm shittin' in my pants 0:18 - 0:24

  • Comment removed

  • lol, i feel... pwnd

  • GUTHRIE=IMMENSE!!!

  • my god! for a while i thought alex hutchings was the new guitar god, but guthrie has taken back his title

  • u can tell his fingers are killing

  • who is best govan or omar rodriguez lopez???

  • hahahaha. seriously?

  • of course, im declined for Omar, but maybe im wrong

  • who cares?

  • we guitarists do!

  • why dose it matter, they both make good music, you can listen to both of them

  • I like how he makes only one mistake in that entire massive picking run at the end.

  • "But it's possible for virtually anyone to get this good if you have the following three things: 1) lots of desire for guitar and music (and above most other things in your life), 2) lots of time to practice (hours a day for years), and 3) good tutoring and information (guitarprinciples[dot]com will help with that)."

wrong. technical/musical ability is at least in part a product of various genetic factors in addition to practice/dedication.

  • If I may point out? It's entirely possible for a reasonably healthy individual to reach these sorts of speeds and attain technical virtuosity of this kind of ilk. Yes, genetics is a factor, but a very small one and can be entirely overcome with enough practice.

  • definitely wrong in my opinion!! i know plenty of people who play all the time and work reaL hard and are very mediocre! i think natural ability is a huge huge factor!

  • Oh? First of all playing is entirely different from practicing. Just playing will not make you a good guitarist, unless like Yngwie, your playing resembles more closely to that of practice rather than noodling.

Natural ability is a huge factor if you don't really, really love music, but as Steve Vai had said, he had to work really hard at it; he felt others naturally progressed faster than him. Steve Vai was practicing 10 - 16 hours a day for years. Do the people you know do this?

    cont...

  • ...Quality of practice is of course important too. Most people, naturally, do not know how to practice effectively and intelligently. I've personally heard of people who have gotten things like carpal tunnel syndrome and had to stop playing.

Ney Mello and Jamie Andreas (virtuosos in their own right) who are also master guitar teachers, say they think anyone in a salubrious condition can reach the level of mastery they wish.

    [cont...]

  • ...If one wasn't born naturally gifted with a high degree of physical intelligence to allow them to easily create what they need to, then a master teacher is needed to show the way. This includes a lot practice too; experts say around 10,000 hours.

The human body is remarkable. I think people take it for granted. What it is capable of is staggering. Such a task to play like Guthrie is easy for the body, per se, if the nervous system has been trained sufficiently.

    [cont...]

  • If it's fast muscle twitch you had in mind, the body is perfectly capable as it is to perform as such high speeds. It's the economy of motion that is more preeminent than speed, at least at first. The hands don't really need to go *all that fast*, once the economy of motion is down. Certainly speed can be trained for too, as Bruce Lee found out in the martial arts.

  • A plethora of knowledge master!! Just read the book Effortless Mastery By kenny Werner for more on this topic.. I also heard the book freeplay is goot too.... but also guthrie has been doing it for a mighty long time! I've been playing for just around 5 years and can't wait to get a couple more years of effective practice under my belt.... Cheers!!!

  • Wise words, man!!!!!

  • yeah now think of it this way, if the guys that progressed naturally faster than steve vai practiced as much as he did they would reach a whole other level above vai.

My point is, yeah you can be good at guitar even if your not naturally talented but a naturally talented person that practices as much as you is always gonna be better.

  • well. yeah. hes been playing when he was 3!

  • niiiiiiiiice

  • they should make a crossroads 2 starring guthrie govan. just gotta decide who plays ralph macchio's part, heh

  • this guy has major chops!

  • they actually sounded like major7 chops to me, haha

    jk

  • What kind of effect he used in 0:58?? ;> it's freaqy

  • digitech whammy pedal if i'm not wrong

  • You're right good sir !

  • you right you right!

  • Indeed sounds like a Digitech Whammy.

  • *Throws guitar out of window* I GIVE UP!!!!

  • Don't do that! Give it to me instead! I kid x)

But it's possible for virtually anyone to get this good if you have the following three things: 1) lots of desire for guitar and music (and above most other things in your life), 2) lots of time to practice (hours a day for years), and 3) good tutoring and information (guitarprinciples[dot]com will help with that).

    :o)

  • Oh, and perfect pitch. Sorry, but to get as good as Govan, you're gonna need a bit more than dedication.

  • What about perfect pitch? You don't need perfect pitch to get that good on a technical level. Although perfect pitch IS very beneficial to becoming a completely free musician - which is an ability which can indeed be developed, despite the common misconceptions and nescience of the subject.

I didn't just say "dedication", I said "lots of desire" and above most other things in one's life. But going by the term "dedication", it would depend on HOW MUCH dedication!

  • I wouldn't say "free", with the exception of Mr. Govan, most people with perfect pitch aren't willing to experiment as much. I don't really know why I was talking so arrogantly but I do agree with you.

  • Well it definitely helps to becoming more free as a musician, but as you say, most people aren't willing to experiment as much. But the potential is indeed there if they so choose to utilise it!

I didn't detect any arrogance in your post.

    G'day :)

  • From what I've heard perfect pitch can be a hinderence - in baroque music, for example, where A is just below 440Hz, everything sounds slightly "off" and relatively pitching becomes difficult. However I imagine this is out of context :)

Don't get me wrong - he's an insanely good guitarist :)

  • Well, that has more to do with the person than the ability. Some musicians can be a little...hum...mellowdramatic, shall we say? ;) It never bothered Jimi Hendrix when he played his guitar that kept going out of tune. When you have PP, you learn by feel that there is a "range" of what A can sound like, like there is a range of what red looks like. Even if it doesn't abide to standard concert pitch.

Now I must return to practice. I have already done 8 hours today! Have a nice day :)

  • I can't seem to spell. Mellodramatic* :D

  • looool LightningStrat.... that was crack up man... ;)

  • Oh? I am glad you found such humour in my writings. :)

  • heh .... shouldn't you be practising?! Get back to it bwoi!! ;)

  • *Giggles*. I've only practiced 4 hours today, but I'm taking a rest today and had to organise some things. My full practice schedule is for 11 hours xD Soon to be following it every day for hopefully 2 or 3 years ^^

    Ah, but we are digressing!

    Guthrie rules :)

  • lol. yeah sure... I believe you LightningStrat ;) .. you reminded me of something I too might have once declared that's all.

True Guthrie is ridiculously good. Just makes me wonder what the human limit is ... or even if there IS one?

  • Hmm. I am indeed being veracious. I have written pages and pages of all my practice schedules and time spent practicing and what I practiced on my account on 43Things (I can link you if you are interested).

Well, Steve Vai practiced 10 - 15 hours a day. Yngwie would sometimes stay up for two days practicing and then fall asleep with his guitar! Zakk Wylde practiced 12 - 16 hours a day and often almost collapsed at school the next day!

The body needs rest, but you can develop stamina :)

  • Sure, there's a limit to what a person can achieve on guitar. But, it wouldn't really matter too much because so much can be achieved and enough for virtually anyone to be at a stage of complete artistic expression.

  • heh if zakk wylde practiced 24/7 he still wouldn't be better than a seagull at guitar. Stupid things ...all pecking away randomly and shit...

Anyhow I get what you're saying but... it's a bit different to what I am meaning. I say haven't you ever for even a moment wished to see what perfection actually looks like? Are we really completely content to just forever make do with that which was conceived from within the boundaries of what we already know is possible? I wanna see the unseen ...now!!

  • Oh yes, I have been obsessed with perfection since an early age, you see. Turns out Siddhartha Gautama was deluded, as were all the so-called "enlightened masters". Try Actual Freedom (Google is your friend here) ;)

  • Well then LighteningStrat... I look forward to seeing the fruits of your intrepid endeavor. I too am a traveller seeking perfection. I have realised that not only is it possible..... it MUST be possible. ...as I have seen and heard it. And it made me become alive. I don't want actual freedom. I want perfection. Both very different things!

  • guys like this definitely aren't married. If so, their wife is hatin' life !!!! ! ! ! ! ! !!!

  • This guy has sold his soul to satan.

  • he can't swim... so I win.

  • ***puts away guitar, to never pick it up again*** I'm humiliated

  • the right hand arpegios are solid alternate :D

  • This is so sick that I just threw up all over myself

  • lol

  • 0:58

    hahahaha xD

    Govan = God

  • and I thought Brent Mason was a hot country picker. HEHE

  • Extremely interesting playing

  • what kind of genre is this??

    Guthrie Govan Rules

  • country shred! ;-)

  • or like bluegrass flat picking, he also does some chickin pickin. country shed pretty much sums it up though!

  • NO DONT STOP!!!!!!!!

  • inhuman

  • he should play in chickenfoot with satch, that would be sick

  • Yup, the most versatile player ever.

  • Just AWESOME! This guy is just unbelievable. It's hard to enough to master just one style but Guthrie has mastered nearly a dozen: rock, shred, blues, country, fusion, jazz, funk, pop, metal, etc...
