  • lol done by euronews that explains a lot

  • don't do it iceland !!! the germans and french don't give a damn about you! england neither .. if you are a small country the only reason to join EU should be if you like to be bullied into beeing something german, france and england likes you to be .

and you will day by day loose you'r independence and become a part of the Impire... a part that is of no more value than a fluffer

  • Icland needs to adopt a gold standard currecy-maybe its own? Dont join the EU, they will destroy you"re fishing like they have destroyed their own. Iceland will rise again, EU is going down! EU politicians are like USSR they are Fat Lazy Money-Grabbers. Stay an independent-free trading nation.

  • @bbphnix Yep.. And? Who the fuck cares?

  • Comment removed

  • @bbphnix Yes but the fact that you pointed it out that there are cities and infact, villages with a bigger population then the entire country. really does not make comment worthy on youtube.

  • Við þurfum bara að kýngja stoltinu okkar og ganga í Evrópu Sambandið

  • @Halldor1994 nei alldrey evran er i verra ástandi en okkar peningur. 5 lönd í eu eru löngu orðin gjaldþrota.

  • What i dont understand, a lot of europeans on youtube seem to have a probelm with the UK on eu membership but not with countries like Norway, switzerland and iceland who havent joined.

They say they want europe to be united but have a big problem with the UK?

    someone explain..

  • Even if Iceland were accepted by the EU (which I doubt, as it needs one more flat-broke country like a bump on the head), it would not stand a chance against Super Germany in any business or industry, like all the other smaller EU countries. Icelandic fishing would be wiped out in a season, because German fishing is ten-times more cost efficient and productive. You would end up even poorer than you are now, and would become the Greeks of the north.

  • Iceland should go in a union with Norway insted of EU and get the Norwegian currency.

  • @helgimar867 this will be decided in a referendum and if you are right then the people on Iceland will vote against this. If you are wrong (which I hope), a majority of the people will vote yes to join the EU

  • Most Icelanders are against joining the EU..

  • Fuck Tony Blair.... Too many parasites out there

  • þetta eru nú meiri íslendingarnir

  • Even many of citizen of EU members countries don"t want EU. Why should I vote yes? O no, I will vote NO.

  • I would never want to join the corrupt, earth destroying, drainage of natural resources, and the early stages of a global government so called "EU".

  • If we join the eu we will get more debt it will cause us a bigger problem for the future.

  • Sry, but...... FUCK THE FUCKING EU I WOULD RATHER BLOW MYSELF UP THAN JOIN IT. :)

  • joining the union won't make you lose your independence!

being a great and strong union it's the only way for us (europeans) to survive to USA and not become a "part" of them!

  • If Iceland will join the EU it will never get over the debt.

Iceland recently found oil, when all of this is over the owner of the area will afford to drill there and money will flow in.

Also, joining the EU has partly the same affect as losing the cod war.

  • iceland should stay out of europe because it is like balkan of europe, greece and iceland is same, cheating corruption. israel is better than iceland

  • Icelanders did not bow to Harald Farhagri a thousand years ago, and they will not bow to the EU today !!!

  • you beautiful country you... come here and give us a big hug.

  • Ad the single European currency:

I am not great fan of the socialist EU, not at all! But one thing, one project is good and that is the euro. I can see many disadvantages of it, bot being objective, it is relatively more or less the most stable, wanted and reliable currency in the world nowadays..gaining on both US dollar and the tiny European national currencies outside the EMS.

The UK, Sweden and others should accept the euro ASAP for the sake of mutual strengthening.

  • I am looking forward to welcome Iceland into the EU :)

  • EU´s hug will warm Iceland

  • Icelandic independence forever! =)

  • That is irrelevant to Icelandic Independence. Whatever those banks may have stolen is not important to anyone who is not directly involved. Everyone is responsible for their own business dealings. Btw, I have never used any of those banks.

I would be willing to hand over those people responsible for those banks, as criminals; and if charges are made through the proper channels I would expect them to be brought to justice, but that's really not up to me.

  • Icelandic independence *is* about being able to directly control our government. If Iceland joins the EU then we will be relinquishing that control by our own volition, not because we owe anybody anything.

  • So all that wealth was just based on boring money?

  • unfortunately... yes

  • Look you idiots! I am not even Christian but can any of you actually say 100% certain what the future holds? The future that will in many ways effect our lives and/or our children lives? NO! And so there for I think that any example of the possible future SHOULD be analyzed.

  • Don't join Iceland! If you enter the EU all of your laws will be made by an EU parliment instead of your own.

  • This video is already out of date. The chances of a YES in the referendum to join are now slim, partly because Iceland does not want EU trawlers taking all it's fish...like they did in Ireland.

    google : No2Lisbon2

  • Iceland! do not join, we have the same problem in Norway.

Policians who wants to join to get theyre part of the cake in bryssels.

    The people decide.

  • The EU is a union of EUROPEAN COUNTRIES and has nothing to do with the Holy Roman Empire

  • Its a prediction that was made generations ago and considering it involves all the territories that were in the Holy roman empire it could in face be seen as a true prediction.

  • What would replace it? The Bible shows that between now and the second coming of the Messiah there will be a union of 10 kings who will restore the Roman Empire (Revelation 17:8, 12-14).

This will not be the first restoration of the Roman Empire. Just 35 years before what is now called the EU was founded by the Treaty of Rome in 1957, Benito Mussolini proclaimed the restoration of the Holy Roman Empire.

  • All of the nations that once were a part of the Holy Roman Empire are today members of the EU. Interestingly, Britain was never a part of the Holy Roman Empire.

  • Um, do you mean the Roman Empire or the Holy Roman Empire? And no not all nations of the Holy Roman Empire are in the EU today. Swiss isn't a part of the EU. Well the Holy Roman Empire was an empire of Germany and Austria and Swiss with some parts of poland, czech republic and holland france and italy and luxemburg n belgium...all those country are in the centre of europe so its not a suprise they're in the EU :s

  • The EU and Mussolini and the holy roman empire have nothing to do with each other? Mussolini wanted to rebuilt the roman empire but not the Holy Roman Empire or? And maybe that was cause he was a facist and italian :p but that has got nothing to do with the EU :s

  • shut the fuck up with all the bible shit, moron

  • Who the fuck do you think yee talkin to?

  • ah youre a moron which believes those stupid theories hahaha. do u still live in middle ages??

  • One of Tony Blair's last acts as Prime Minister of Great Britain was to sign the new European "Constitution", effectively committing the nation to handing over yet more of its sovereignty to the European Union.

(Just one shocking fact on how corrupt the EU is)

  • On the other hand, a "yes" vote will leave America having to rethink its future course. Losing its most powerful ally in an increasingly unfriendly world would be a serious loss for Washington. The history of the 20th century shows that whenever America and Britain have fought together, they have always won. If the vote on the proposed EU constitution is "yes," it could very likely spell the end of the special relationship.

  • If you can call the iraq and afghanistan a win yes we beat the nations but made the people there hate us even more. It wouldn't really effect the relationsship at all since all nearly all nations of the EU are close allys to the US.

  • You're actually saying that you want your country to leave the EU ... well then you should be voting YES to the lisbon treaty so you can leave it cause at the moment your country can't. So why don't you just vote yes to the lisbon treaty make your own party and since the majority of britains want to leave the EU they'll vote for you and you can leave it. There you've got your democrazy

  • No. We will vote No to the Lisbon treaty and any treaty from the EU. Britain is not a legal member of the EU because the only people who have signed us up to it had no authority to do so. Her majesty the Queen would have to sign such things. I cannot believe that the EU will ever be democratic because they are far from democratic at the moment!

  • You want more democrazy within the EU but you say no the lisbon treaty - That's paradox. Today the Queen doesn't have that much power anymore she's more just here to represent your country but the most decisions are made by your government right?

  • Most powers have been taken from her but the biggest powers she still has. She can dissolve Parliament and declare.

If our prime minister goes evil she can have him shot. Most of the armed forces answer to her. This also goes for most of the Commonwealth nations i.e Canada and Australia.

These powers have not been used for generations but there has already been accusations of treason.

When we leave the EU I wont have hard feelings. I will wish you all the best of luck!

    :-)

  • but the people of most of these states aren't as rich as the european ones

  • and the problem is that china india etc become reacher while we get poorer by time because they take over alot of our work and don't need us that much anymore.

    3. Yes im european im from germany

    4. i don't really know what japan will do but japan is no superpower either and europe has always been until the second world war and by the EU we are one again.

    5. depends on how u define rich ...the richest states are the ones with oil such as saudi arabia ..

  • If/when the EU does well,

If you answer these simple questions correctly can you honestly stand up and put your hand on heart and say we got there with nothing but honesty , duty and respect?

If not was it worth while?

  • It's not wrong to be proud on your country I'm also proud of mine apart from the last century but by globalisation the national states as they used to be don't exist anymore and I don't see a difference between a german and a french spanish greek whatever our culture is pretty much the same and what would it change for you if europe was onecountry?instead of voting for the british government you'd vote for a european government?it doesn't make a difference except that u livein a stronger country

  • Oh aye? And whats the capital of this country? Who is the current head of it? Are they a president or a prime minister? What is the law? What is the first language? what is the anthem? What if the flag? Is it a democratic nation?

All this does not matter to us. Only to you. Our majority have already decided that we do not want to be part of the EU. Give a vote, accept no, let us out of the EU, let every EU nation have this opportunity and by doing so you will show the world you are democratic.

  • Agreeing to the lisbon treaty wouldnt make a new state but well I guess that Brussels would be the capital since it's the capital of the EU but it doesn't make any difference if its 1000 or 500 kilometres away :s. I'd go for a president and we already have a EU anthem. It'd be most likely to take that over. Flag = EU flag. Ofc it would be a democratic nation. The first language would most likely be English since it's the language most people can speak.

  • London Birmingham and Manchester are all bigger than Brussels.

We have a prime minister and a Queen so we don't need a president.

You say first language English but the anthem is in German... So that means the majority wont be able to sing the anthem let alone understand it.

I think at the end of the day it is best all around to say that the British people are happy with the flag we have. We want to join Switzerland and Norway. :-)

  • yes Berlin is also bigger than Brussels but that's not what matters (New York is also bigger than Washington yet washinton is the capital) and the NATO headquarters is also in Brussels...

Yes you do but u'd agree that u can't ask of all europeans to accept your prime minister and Queen

the anthem is NOT in German. the anthem was made by a german componist but the EU has left the text out so no country gets favoured.

  • Well actually Washington state is bigger than New york state but I get your point.

you say so no country gets favoured but there are already favoured countries. Belgium for one seems to control the EU. Germany & France has an EU house of Parliament. France has had European capital of culture four times Some nations have never had it.

Barosso named the EU an empire.

Germany and Britain have had empires so you should know as well as we do that there is always a head nation of an empire!

  • Belgium doesn't control the EU Brussels is just the capital of it and I guess Brussels was a pretty good choice since it's Belgium is not one of the BIGGER countries of Europe and it's pretty much in the centre. Germany doesn't have a house of Parliament Straßbourgh is in France but well it's really near the boarder so I get your point. yea they should really give it to other nations as well. Well yea it kinda is an "empire" but i agree its the wrong word for what it is now but it couldget one

  • We did this centuries ago and did a better job. England Ireland Scotland and Wales.

We called it a Kingdom! That is enough for us. If we could do that back then why cant they do better now? Pfff Even 'family' would be a better name.

But look. Its very simple. The very fact that we have been denied a referendum since it was the common market makes us decide that its no to the EU.

The EU it self decided that for us.

  • centuries ago Great Britain was also a superpower and now its not anymore and all of Ireland was a part of the UK back then. Centuries ago also Germany Spain Porutgal France etc. were superpowers but today we aren't anymore. The times have changed and we have to accept that we can't have the same influence as we used to and stay with our little national states only. We now have the chance of building a stronger europe, a peaceful and united europe don't fuck it up ;)

  • Great Britain at one time had more money, power and land than all the other nations put together.

This is the very reason that we don't want to be a super power now.

Look at every super power in history! British empire, USA, Nazi Germany, USSR. What do they all have in common? They were all hated and accused of being the world bully. I do not want that for Britain or Europe. I admire the Swiss for being one of the most peaceful nations in the world. Not the USA for being the most powerful.

  • I seriously doubt you've had more power than all the other nations put together one time but uve had the biggest empire ye

Well I can understand that nazi germany was hated:P and I think the USA also has alot of allys in the world and is not only hated :s :P And not only big empires are hated, just look at Iran and north korea atm and most arabs country hate israel and it's really not the biggest country. And just because you have a big country it doesn't mean you cant live in peace

  • You've misunderstood me. At the time of the British empire we had that power compared to the other nations at that time.

I am sure that Europe can develop a super power without Britain. I would rather see Britain as an independent, peaceful nation with just enough to defend herself from threats. We can do that and when the people are listened to we shall. I don't really see why the pro EU Europeans are so Kean to tie us up to this when its so clear that our people are against it.

  • I guess we could but Britain wouldn't be less peaceful than Europe as long as it's in the NATO cause we'd probably always be fighting in the same wars. You'd have to go neutral like swiss if you want to be a peaceful country and since you have really close connections with the USA I doubt even more that your government would decide to leave the EU , NATO and go neutral

  • Britain would be more peaceful out of the EU and has been more peaceful in the past compared to the EU today.

The British relation with the USA in no way effects Britains decision on the EU. The best path for Britain is in the eye of the Briton.

The voice of the majority of any nation should be the choice of the government in relation.

  • Sorry but britain wasn't more peaceful in the past than the EU :s. There has been no war cause of the EU yet. The afghanistan war was a NATO mission so britain would have joined if they were in the EU or not and actually Britain willingly went to iraq (probably cuz of the relations with the US) while EU countries like germany and france didn't. So hows britain more peaceful than the EU?

  • 1, Who does Germany belong to?

2, Were they asked weather Germany should a part of the EU?

3, The nations that were asked that question all voted no, does that mean thy are no longer part of the EU?

4, If Britain and Holland are now part of the EU did their official heads of state sign to agree to this?

5, Is it wrong to be a nationalist to your own nation but right to be a nationalist to the EU?

  • No we weren't asked but it doesn't have any negative aspect for us also? For now the eastern europeans benefit more than we do but once they have a stable economy etc. all of europe will benefit from it and bringing Europe closer doesn't have a negative aspect in my opinion. No it doesn't mean they are no longer a part of the EU but every state should know that if they join the EU that they have to give up their sovereignty more and more. its not just a economical union

  • People of Iceland, this will be the biggest mistake you will ever make don't enter in the name of your country and God

  • Well said!

  • thank you nice to know someone agrees with me :D

  • I think you will find a large majority agree with you! It's just that the majority that do agree are busy hard working people. Where as the people who are for the EU tend to be unemployed idiots who talk all day about how good the EU is but don't realise what a negative impact it has on the British work force and the country as a hole. The EU is obsessed with stats, mandates, risk assessments and so on. They stop the workers from doing their jobs. This has caused massive problems in our economy.

  • as they demonstrated with this recession, bureaucracy is a bitch

  • after getting raped during this recent economic recession i can see why they want to join.

  • Eu is bad. Iceland should strive for a common Nordic union like Nordek. Thus it's not only culturally and politically tied to the rest of the Nordic countries but also economically. EU is corrupt and continue with stupid things as the CAP.

  • If you look on a map iceland is not tiny at all :D!

  • I will freak out if iceland joins the EU ! They only want us so they can use our natural resourches!, such as the oil and also the fish ! Iceland and Norway are special and the best countries who shouldn't join the EU

  • You Iceland people are the most Arrogant people i have ever seen. Thinking you are better then other Europeans yet you don`t even have a financially stable nation and currency. Such an arrogant and financially unstable nation shouldn`t be admitted in too the EU. Ps. We have a brilliant fishing industry in the Netherlands. Again Iceland arrogance thinking they are better. How sad.

  • Comment removed

  • HEY ! I'm not saying we are better than anyone else here! Stop calling us arrogant you don't know anything about icelandic people so just SHUT UP!!

  • The EU has an unelected president, and an unelected governing commitee beneath that president. The only people you will be able to vote for, is MEP'S from your own state or in Britains case, a dimished region. This region will be governed by other European states including France. Surprise ,surprise. We English will no longer have our own country. That is not nonscence, that is a fact!

  • So you've personally voted Gordon Brown to head your government, or the Queen to be your head of state? I don't think so.

As you said, yes, MEPs are the only fully elected body while the rest are representatives (who represent memberstates and states interest). I fully support increasing the power of the European Parliament, but that will also make the EU more federalist.

  • haha:P oooke:D

  • Iceland is one of a kind. Don't join the EU, it will take you down with it.

  • Comment removed

  • It's "liar" you arab loving whore. Europeans are like pests.

    Long live the EU-free Iceland.

  • Why do you care about Iceland in EU and Europe when you are a stupid american freak?

  • stay in your america and do whatever you want with your flag but don't ever talk bad things of Europe you motherfucking slut

  • why do you think that Switzerland/Norway chose NOT to join the EU?

    Answer: Because they're just better.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm not lying lol

  • The Eurobanks set the rates on the currencies. They have impoverished Iceland just like they do third world countries. The huge loans cannot be paid back. Then they will dictate internal policies in Iceland just like they do in the US & UK. Their intention is to destroy all economies and eliminate the middle class. Ten years from now this will be complete. Read a history book. This is what power always does: steal and consolidate. The EU was instituted contrary to national laws & w/o a vote.

  • No, don't join the EU.

As posted previously, you will lose your own identity. It may see like a good idea when things are tough. But I am sure they will find their feet again.

  • There's nothing with the EU that makes you lose your own identity.

Also when it comes to identities, there's nothing saying you can't both be Dutch and European, or Iceland and European, or British and European at the sametime.

  • But we are English and British, Scottish and British, Welsh and British and Irish and British.

Your saying we should be English, British, European? What next? English, British, European, Earthling?

WE ARE HAPPY WITH ENGLISH, BRITISH!

  • Dude come down from your britsh hype ....you're also a european and also a earthling if you want it or not. And the thesis that the EU has only had better influence is just bullshit. We need the EU if we europeans want to keep our influence in the world. the rising economic powers as india china russia etc. won't take about the little european countires in the future that's why we need a strong and united europe. The EU makes the UK stronger and not weaker get over with it

  • That's exactly what they want you to think isn't it! Well look....

1, Why would China, India and Russia's economy matter at all when we could trade with them anyway? The USA has had a stronger economy that ours and that's not caused any problems.

2, Are you European yourself because I'v only heard yanks say dude.

3, Explain what Japan will do as such a small nation competing with the big?

4, Why are the richest European nations out of the EU?

Oh and like I said I'M ENGLISH.

  • 1. I've got an question what's the reason why you are so against a united europe? And dont answer cuz the EU is corrupt or anything because u refuse to see yourself as an european also :P so there must be more behind it

    2. the thing is that the USA are the closest allies of the most western european countries and economically the EU is stronger than the US and china etc. isn't an ally as the US to the west and they wont cooperate with europe as the us does

  • Icelanders don´t join EU, your country is very rich, i know the crisis was very bad to your country but if you join EU you will have much more problems EU is destroying the cultures and identities of the countries... In 50 years Europeans will be a minority in their own continent. Europe for Europeans! I say yes to an economic, military and political partnership but no to this imperialism that is destroying our countries. Sorry for my english.

  • I completely agree with you.

  • I hope we will join EU. Icelanders have never been as eurosceptic as foreign media have said. Go to wikipedia and look for "Iceland EU" there you can see a table of polls all the way back to 2005 and most of them are favoriring admission application and even joining without knowing what the contract would like and also support for picking up the Euro. In fact, the euro currency is our main reason for wanting to join.

Nej! Behov jeg sige mere!

  • Iceland's self-sufficiency is what makes Iceland, well, Iceland!

I do not believe joing the EU is any solution to the crisis in Iceland; the crisis is happening all over the world and Iceland's amazing sense of nationalism is what will get them through, not the EU.

  • We in Britain are demanding to join the United States. To join an EU wich is full of corruption and is based on a Soviet Union style government, is just madness! So far the only country to gain from the EU finacially is France. I got nothing against the French, but they get more from the system then anyone else! And immigration is a problem for us British. We have now lost our country to colonising foreigners that the EU has allowed in! They ordered us to drop our borders. We were left powerless

  • Corruption? Why are you saying this? That's just ridiculous, the EU works, and it is a democratic ELECTED organ.

The problem is that the people don't know what it does.

Communist government? Ridiculous: how would you explain the EU policy of privatising all manner of sectors to make things cheaper?

Only France benefits? Without the Euro, we'd be bankrupt by now. Also, all ill-developed countries that joined the EU have gone through an unprecedented rate of development.

  • Please don't let yourself be educated by the many sensasionalist newspapers you have in the UK. They are full of crap. You have plenty of information in the Internet about the EU. Google it, confront sources and use your brain to make your own opinion. Don't just follow what you read in the newspapers.

There are many things about the EU we can criticize, but what you wrote is a complete nonsense.

  • I don't get why people say "The EU is corrupt", when it is a superpower with the most moral power in the world.

The parliament is a democratic organ, with elections held to determine who represents a country.

Fishing quota are determined to preserve biodiversity and to prevent overfishing.

It is understandable that fishermen want to make more profit, but you can't have both.

If the Icelanders want to join the EU, well then, they are welcome if you ask me ;)

  • Iceland in, England out.

    That's more like it.

    EU4ever

  • For Guds skyld, ikke bli med i EU. Fight din regjering, opphold selvstendig! Vi i Storbritannia kjemper for vår frihet og selvstendighet! Ikke gi bort din frihet! Dens en av lifes edle varer!

  • Dont worry, the icelandic priminister will be murdered if they try to get us to join the EU.

It looks like its going to happend. The Samfylking party are trators. They are not icelanders to me.

  • Iceland should prepare for mass immigration and Spanish fishers on their coast if they join the EU.

  • I think it would be great if Iceland joined the European Union. Iceland is an extremely modern country and is well on it's way to becoming the worlds first hydrogen econamy. Which alot of poluting countries could follow as an example.

  • Go fishing, listing to björk-crybaby and shut-up .... we dont want you at EU, stay with yourself in your overprized country and keep up your incest-game!!

  • Do not join the EU, please!!!

  • I think the Icelanders would benefit much from EU, a country with roughly 300 000 people wont stand strong in a time with global economic difficulties.

    Hälsningar från Sverige

  • Hope they join, expansion os good of the EU.

And most of the so called "Eurosceptics" here are uneducated morons who decide their political ideology by watching ShitNN.

  • yeah eu can make your life to hell if it wants to

  • which eu,sud america para siempre!!!

  • Fight-on!

  • Nice future waiting for us.

In couple years from now fascist BNP in UK will gain power enough to largly influence birtons' brains. After their anti-eu, anti-muslim, pro-nation campaign the britons' will rise with screaming out their blood, cultural superiority over continent and muslims. Civil unrests, possible genocide and Kristallnacht about to come.

Already now you are described as police state, though you yourself prefer new term database state.

  • I hope that iceland will not join the EU!

Ég vona að ísland fari ekki í evrópisambandið!

  • Europe has indeed no need for many Muslims swarming over their nice countrys, whos only intention is to smash our churches down and put some mosque instead, and trying to rape our nice politics against us ourselfs, for example in the Netherlands its almost that far that you may not critisize Islam, totaly insane, our system is just binding itself with so many laws that it has almost no power anymore, i say more power to the EU and more police on the street and way less Islam in EU

  • Fuck The EU!!!!!!!! Fucking EU and their fucking Mass Immigration, if Iceland joins the EU, than fucking Muslim terrorist will start moving there in the thousands and fuck the country up!! Look what the EU did to Sweden!!!

  • what did the muslims do to Sweden?

  • Nothing, BjornThor is a xenophibic racist that should go to prison.

  • Bjorn, there probably is not much around a terrorist might find it worth the effort to blow up. So chill.

And yes. Better stay off. If Iceland join, the EU WILL swapp Iceland around for Madagascar geographically by non-democratic decrete.... JUST FOR FUN!

It WILL put Madagascar where you are now and Iceland near the South Pole, turn Penguin-fishing into your main industries and expell the trolls. We don't have any in the EU anymore, so they must go (or al least be registered and tagged).

  • What Iceland need are permanent immigrants to power their economy and society.

  • alot of peoples will exchange their freedom for security when they are starving

  • Check dailymail co uk today, there is an article about iceland being fasttracked to join the EU!

    Oh dear :-(

  • Please, don't ever ever join EU.

  • And why my dear Caimlly?

  • Because EU suck..

  • What a highly qualified comment xD

I have to worm arguments out of of you, huh? Or is it just a feeling deep in your heart? ^^

  • It's nothing good about EU.. It's like, Hitler number 2..

  • ^^ you never read a history book, eh? The third Reich was a dictatorship, the EU is a democracy... Do you know the difference? Apparently not! Give me an example what the third Reich has in common with the European Union!

  • Democracy....Zimbabwe style maybe !

European taxpayers are sick & tired of FUNDING the EUs own propaganda campaign ; MEPs who can become millionares by fiddling their expenses and thousands of un-elected meddling burocrats.

European democrats are fed up with the EUs top -down ` democracy ´ and ever increasing intrusion into our national affairs the EU are now telling German bakers how to bake their bread ! The EU plans sweeping school reformsyet has no legal right to do so etc.

  • Does Iceland need this madness ?

The Lisbon Treaty (Article 33,paragraph 6) allows the EU executive (WITHOUT CONSULTATION) the right to change or declare null & void ALL rules;regulations;laws present in existing treaties relating to the ECONOMY ;TAX ;CIVIL SOCIETY ;environment etc.

    « Sorry,this is a dictatorial constitution » (Prof. Schachttschneider, University of Erlangen-Nürnberg).

Vote for true DEMOCRACY in this summers European elections & save FREEDOM in Europe !

  • @Spenner56: I totally agree with your last point: Vote for true DEMOCRACY in this summers EUropean elections & save FREEDOM in Europe! Vote for a party that supports a United Europe :)

  • I would like to remind you that the EU is not in any way democratic as the only democratically elected body is it's Legoland "parliament" that has NO POWERS TO LEGISLATE ! This is a betrayal of the very concept of democracy.

I believe in a "united" Europe too,.. but not an un-democratic US of Europe that only panders to big business. An EU that spent over 2 Billion Euros of taxpayers money on it's own propaganda in 2008 according to Open Europe figures.

    Thanks for your comment.

  • Your elected heads of state and the European Parliament Members are elected by the people. The European Parliament by the European people and the heads of state by their countries people. Regarding the "power to legislate" I think there are lots of examples that there is a a legislative power for example the energy thing etc. but you are right if you think that the EP needs any more power, like the whole foreign policies and so on

  • The heads of state are elected to run their own countries,...not elected by voters to be part of a European "elite" whose main job seems to be supporting big business.

    One example :

The right to strike in the EU(but not really).

If the strike restricts movement of capital.goods, persons & services( the whole point of strike action ! ) then it is against the law.

    European Court of Justice rulings : C-438/05 & C-341/05.

Give us back "government for,of and by the people".

  • actually the european constitution treaty and the currently discussed lisbon treaty aimed to transfer more power to the EP... but saying that the EU is not democratic in any way is pure nonsense. There are some montesquieuan problems with the intitution as the heads of state make up both the EU "government" (excecutive power) and the main legeslative body.

However, all the influential persons have a democratic mandate from their respective countries like Aussergardloge already pointed out.

  • European voters are getting tired of being lied to ! To suggest that a national electorate chose a party & leader on the basis of who would be best suited to sit on an EU Commission or Council is ridiculous at best.

Here are a few other well known EU lies : There are no plans for a European superstate ; there are no plans for a European Army ; the Constitution is not comparable to the Lisbon Treaty ; the Commission respects the Irish NO vote.

  • Spenner, you are so blinded by your agenda that you don't even care whether the things you say are true or not, you just spout fearmongering oneliners. The EU is not perfect and its administration could certainly need improvement, but all the decision makers are in one way or another democratically elected and as an institution it's weak and low budget. I would just like to know who reveals all the big truths to you about all the evil intentions of the EU about becoming a tolitarian superstate.

  • *"truths"

    **totalitarian

  • As regards building a totaitarian state, please ponder on this : scores or EU "working groups" (who meet in private and are not even allowed to reveal their work to MEP's) have already drafted over 1,100 new laws that turn most Europeans into criminals as no-one can memorise 1,100 new pieces of legislation. Two typical examples : since January 2006 it is ilegal to work on your own car; as of Jan.2010 it will be ilegal to sell fruit in any weight other than kilos.

    Freedom, what freedom !

  • The President of the German liberal party FDP in the European Parliament, Silvana Koch-Mehrin, said: "if the EU itself applied for membership of the EU, it would be refused. The reason would be: no democracy". She added: "Meanwhile more and more competences have been transferred to the EU level, without the EU structures having become more democratic".

    (German daily Handelsblatt newspaper ).

"Goverment of the people,by the people and for the people" ( Abe Lincoln ) is what Europeans want !

  • "you are so blinded by your agenda that you don't even care whether the things you say are true or not, you just spout fearmongering oneliners"

Oelergodt, that's the perfect portrait of every europhobe I have ever encountered.

  • "The heads of state are elected to run their own countries,." .... Well, I would think people by now realize that the government they choose, will also be a major player in the EU. Right?

  • rabelai2006. Yes I know Iceland is a member of the EEA, I lived and worked there, but becoming a full member of the EU, the embyonic 'European Federation' is a whole different ball game.

The Icelandic people will do as they wish, but taking action because of a current crisis may be a decision they live to regret. Such action could totally change the complexion of Iceland in a very short period of time.

  • Actually mulungungozi, Icelanders have favored admission to EU for some years now but the ones favoring it never put EU as a top priority where as the anti-EU voters did. This is changing now and I believe and hope we will both join EU and pick up the Euro.

I don´t think you realize how involved EEA countries are with EU. Of the EU rules Sweden adopts, Iceland has adopted 80% of them. The only difference is Iceland gets the rules sent in the mail but Sweden has representation in Brussels.

  • €.U. and ICELAND

  • Always the same, when nation polls are reported in the news about EU it is always like this: 60% want to begin admission talks with EU. They "forget" to mention that let´s say 20% asked did not take a stand and only 20% did not want to begin admission talks.

The fact is that about 60% Icelanders directly want to join EU, 40% not. 80% want to begin admission talks to join, 20% against, and about 80% of Icelanders want to pick up the euro.

  • Discussions about what is or what is not good for Scotland has no place here, this thread is about ICELAND.

I have a great regard for the Icelandic people as I lived there for five years. I honestly feel that joining the EU out of fear and panic would be a huge mistake for many reasons.

Iceland is a small nation and it could all too easily drown in the EU. Losing control of its borders could be one of the biggest dangers, as could be the loss of its currency and possibly even its language.

  • Losing control of it´s borders? Iceland is already a member of EEA contract, and therefore part of the free trade area of Europe just like EU countries. We are also members of Schengen area.

  • "loss of its currency and possibly even its language."

    More anglo bullcrap.

No country has ever been forced to 'lose their currency' - those that wanted to join the single currency joined, those that didn't didn't.

Lose their language? Even Maltese is protected by the EU, for Chirst's sake, even though only a bunch of people speak it.

  • no it wouldn't, we'd be richer than england as they wouldn't have control over our oil resources anymore.

    try reading before talking shit.

  • It shows that only enemies of european people want to the conteinent to be divided. It is euroskeptics who run iceland at present. Why do they want the continent to be weak and divided?

  • Why not issue a gold backed currency instead of handing out your economic freedoms to the eurosocialistic central committee in Frankfurt? I wouldn't be shocked if the central banks did that by design to get Island into their claws by integrating it into the eurosystem.

  • That would be a dream, but don't see it happening.

Ron Paul for prime minister of Iceland!
