Dude i dont know why your grasshopper came dull, Mine was RAZOR sharp. Still is, My dumb ass actually just put a deep cut on my palm with it while watching this. Not even joking
Got my Bug set today in the mail, heck they are even smaller than I thought. They are Great, the Tiny Bug is my favourite-is this the worlds smallest folding knife,I haven't seen one to beat its size.
I get the grasshoppaaa coz I grew up among other programes watching kungfu here in the UK I love My spyderco honeybee (first ever spyderco knife) and they should have the warning even though they are cheap they can seriously damage your wealth the quality tells even in these micro knives makes my debit card panic about what Im going to order next possibly the spyderco slippit big brother the UKPK maybe grasshopper but tenacious keeps saying buy me too :-)
I've got a bug. I dig it. It rides on my keychain, used for opening boxes, letters, threads, etc. It's got some micro-chipping for sure, little stained. But definitely worth the price. Love it!
i wear my grasshopper concealed around the neck on some paracord as a backup blade. mine came really sharp out of the box and is still holding it's edge after several uses. couldn't be happier with it.
@PaiRaiUno I could be wrong but I believe in very late 2010 early 2011 spyderco switched to 8cr13mov steel equivilent to aus8 My honeybee came out of the box hair popping sharp too but only got that a couple of days ago
i just got a Paramilitary 2 and a bug knife in the mail. I got the bug for the POU of key chain knife and am loving it! I have a knife on me all the time so if I'm somewhere i cant have said larger knife I at least have something.
Here are the steel specs as of now! The Bug and Honeybee still have the 3cr8mov blades, but the Grasshopper has 8cr13mov. They've also added the Kiwi3 to bugs, it also has 8cr13mov and runs for about $20. It also comes with stag scales, which add grip and make it look cooler but increase the price to $30. The coice is yours! : )
Just for your information: i just gut my grasshopper 2 days ago. The engraving on the blade says 8Cr13MoV. I don't know if spyderco changed the specs since your review!?
i got the grasshopper as a keychain knife. it's a bit large for a keychain but it makes a nice handle for taking my keys out of my pocket. i gotta say, i was impressed with the quality. mine actually came pretty sharp out if the box and the blade had no wobble whatsoever. definitely buying more. great vids by the way, keep it up.
Hey Nutn, any chance you are going to review an Ambitious? It's a pretty small package for a decent price. I know how you like those lighter weight small knives, and since you liked the Tenacious I am curious to see what you have to say about the Ambitious.
The word is that it is a Dragonfly on steroids. About twice the weight but overall similar characteristics.
12:09 Man. Mother and I had a discussion on what the grasshopper was more reminiscent of; mother said the Delica 3, I said the military titanium. So it continues. What do you think the grasshopper looks more like, the military or the delica 3?
After sliding off an icy Interstate into the only gap in the concrete K-Rails for miles (and following other vehicles that had only recently been towed away), my truck's front axle managed to double-fold and pin a heavy rubber/plastic base for one of those skinny construction pylons (not the barrel kind, the skinny kind).
Out of all the tools I had with me, my brand new Spyderco was the only thing that could cut it apart so I could free my truck and get out of the situation. Love them!
i know this has no significant value in the knife industry, but what you call skateboard tape is actually called grip tape, not trying to be a jerk telling you off for getting it wrong, but that just kinda bothers me. :/
@lasttonothing Thanks for the comment! I think Nutn has heard this before, but it just hasn't sunk in the way it should have....I'll tell him again. =) -- Veri
35-40 Bucks for the dragonfly? Thats extremely cheap where I live. At the nearest sporting goods store its 70 bucks! And the other Spydercos they have are even more! They have a delica for 95, native for 80-95, I dont quite remember exact pricing, and then the endura is 100 bucks for plain blade, 105 serrated! That is extremely expensive, so if I ever get a dragonfly its gonna be off amazon or ebay, where I can get for 35-40 bucks.
honeybee was my first spyderco, I really like it but the steel is really soft, 8Cr13 I believe. kind of sucks, but it' s still worth the price, this is probably a knife the policewont have a problem with where ever I carry it
My favorite is the Bug. I keep it in my back pocket and sharpen it once a month. It cuts like a big boy, and I use it to open packages and cut food like apples and sandwiches, and a bunch of other stuff.
WOW! Just got my first Spydies in the post and I am very impressed. I picked up the Bug, Honeybee, Grasshopper and Tenacious to make me feel better about having to sell my fixed blades! I cant get over the quality and out-the-box sharpness of these little beauties! The lock up on the slip joints is fantastic for such small knives and the cutting performance of all 4 blades far surpassed my expectations. Now I see why Spyderco are so damn popular. Only problem is I dont know what to get next!
The bug really does make for a VERY useful keychain knife, it's like a folding scalpel/exacto knife. I've used it cut rope/paracord, open mail, sharpen pencils, etc.
Anyone have any idea if they will take it away at the airport if it's attached to your keys? I'm guessing yes
I recommend putting about 3/4" of skate board grip tape on the spine of the handle, right behind the thumb ramp (thumb ramp itself is a little skinny to reliably attach tape). you may have to use a little super glue
There seems to be some confusion over the UK knife law. As a new UK subscriber I thought I'd try and help clarify things a bit. You can carry any type of non- automatic or assisted opening knife -but only if you have a good reason for doing so. If you need a locking blade knife for your work for instance, or if you are doing some woodland camping, you may also carry a fixed blade knife of any size provided you don't wear it around town. But for EDC, less than 3" no-locking blade only.
i work in a factory and we have to break down alot of boxes and i fine i hardly ever have to cut the card bored its self we tend to cut the tape to break down boxes. Not saying you wont ever but just saying save your edge when you can. having that but on a key chain comes in handy. FYI i tend no to buy knives untill after i check your reviews nunfancy... i check others but if you say its good i dont even need to see anybody elses... thanks for the vids
Just picked up the honeybee and grasshopper for the collection. and i have to say if the grasshopper had a lock back it would be my only edc. worst problem with the grasshopper is the slip is real lose and it barely stays open. not sure if it's defective or not but wish it was more secure open love the fact its FFG though. and if it was made in the USA that might help the slip joint reliability but who knows.
Hey Nutn, if you like these little guys, you should get a ladybug 3 and make a review on it. It's just like a delica only tiny! I have a foliage green one and love it.
but i don't want my girlfriend to carry a knife like that except on keychain ... my girlfriend should care a small linerlock, framlock or lockback knife so she couldn't get cut that easly ... i'm more thinking about spyderco dragonfly , dodo knife, cricket , ladybug, leaf storm ... more in that way ...
@mochalucha Nutn hasn't found a Strider knife that he wants to do a review on yet. Frankly, he says he's not real impressed with them...they're expensive, many models have sharp handle edges, and they are a bit over-hyped. If he finds one he likes he'll do a review on it though. -- Veri
I just got the grasshopper for my birthday yesterday, this one was razor sharp out of the box and I love it, I also got a SOG micron I and that is also very good, very cool too, maybe you should have a look at it, I use it with a small lanyard and I keep it in my wallet.
If you want a realy quality knive, buy a Swiss Victorinox These are very good, and made from good steel with a lifetime warranty!! I own several of them, and if you want a real cheap utility knife buy a french Opinel in carbon steel sharp as a razor!!
@tengc For the Victorinox knives they use Stailess steel with a Rockwell hardness off 54-56 rc The steel is an alloy and it contains the following components. Carbon 0,52% Chrom 15% Mangaan 0,45% Molybdenum 0,5% Sillicium 0,6%.
The opinel knives are made of carbon steel, they are cheap, but very sturdy and with a little care they last for years. I owne two of them, the no. 9 and the no. 12
bought one of these after i fell in love with spyderco, mine was very sharp out of box and the blade does not play side to side at all... i nice knife to keep in your pocket or on your desk for opening letters or boxes stuff like that... great looking blade and doesnt look to mean or scary if you have to use it in public to open anything...love it...i have the honey bee sized one
...I have a Spyderco!!..it's only a grasshopper..£12 in uk..but it's a SPYDERCO and a serious little knife..mine from the box was actually sooo good ...cardboard did dull it after a while but it is UK legal....ha ha ha ha..good call Nutn!!
Well, I subsribed. I have watched your videos for a while but never did subscribe and I dont actually know why, because your videos are great, very thorough, detailed and of course. You seem to know a little about our laws ;) (UK) please could you make a video on which guns are available here because I live here and I dont even know myself. Thanks a lot and hope you get this :)
Thinking about getting this sweet little thang from "YCS". So cheap!
edit: Oh woah..the bug is sooo tiny! hahah I didn't realize did you compared it to your "cadet". Think I'll go with the "honeybee" or "grasshopper" for out and back hiking or just use around the house.
i was wondering, do you know if the grasshopper is disassemble-able and reassemble-able? im trying out a new project and the grasshopper seems like the perfect size and definitely in the price range. thank you!
btw i purchased the spyderco tenacious and kershaw skyline because of you =]
hey nutn do you think it is a bad idea for a 14 year old kid to get a knife? if so then why? if not do you have anything i can say to concise my parents otherwise?
Nutn/Veri, Is it me or does the honeybee have the smallest lanyard hole of the three, and does the bug fit 550 paracord? Also is satin cord good for a lanyard?
Hey Nutn! You should do some contests. that would be pretty sweet. And not just usa, do some canada and europe ones as well (but especially some canada ones) Try your hardest if you can.
Wow, the smallest one is $10 at my local knife store... I was actually gonna go pick it up to put on my keys before I even saw this vid... now I might just have to order it, depends on shipping cost though.
I have a Spyderco bug next to my apartment keys. Useful for very easy cutting tasks and it brings originality to your keyring. However, I'd like to warn future buyers that the steel scatches very easily. Don't let anyone unexperienced with sharpening even try to touch it up. The VG10 on this knife receives scratches like crazy. Excellent knife though apart from that.
I ended ordering 2 Bumblebees and one Bug from YourCornerStore and I love them! I'll be ordering many more; I'm always needing to open boxes and packages at work and these are perfect!
hey nutn check out "guns on campus" a senator in arizona has just made it so ccw holders will be able to carry concealed on public college campus. finally someone gets it. anyway this was on national news and she shares the same views expressed in gun free death pay.
@tac94540 yep i like it cuz we have some forested areas, in the mountains and we have desert and our gun laws are pretty generous compared to other state's
Lock-backs suck. My Spyderco's lock failed! Pocket lint got wedged in there just from floating around in my pocket. Went to use the blade to open a box and it nearly cut my finger off. Never again!
Good vid, Nutnfancy! A GREAT micro knife is the Byrd Finch. It is a phenomenal keychain knife and has a lockback, G10 handle scales and 8cr13Mov blade steel. It is one of the most pleasantly surprising knives that I've ever owned and mine goes with me everywhere. As for the "slipits", I've been digging my UK Pen knife big time. S30V blade steel, cool G10, no liners. Freaking awesome.
make a 1911 surival kit use 1911 lanyard mags with the lanyards and attach a honeybee and then wrapband aids around the 45.acp round then put it in a mag and repete then take the 45.s out when you need and take off band aid okay what i wrote was just stupid exept attaching a knife two themag hmmmm
dude...your reviews have saved me SO much time/money/frustration. THANKS!

Hey Nutnfancy!
i was wondering, do you know if the grasshopper is disassemble-able and reassemble-able? im trying out a new project and the grasshopper seems like the perfect size and definitely in the price range. thank you!
btw i purchased the spyderco tenacious and kershaw skyline because of you =]

Great knives. Keychain, add to a Photo Freedom Light, etc.
Looks like a toy, but it is not. Takes a great edge and holds it.
Perfect box, envelope, and clamshell opener.
Thanks Nutn for turning me on to these. Great value.

not vg10 steel..at 00:09 on the blade you can see aus-8 stainless stamped on it.

Thanks, Eoin.

Sorry but I just don't see the point of carrying a knife this small. A tiny knife is just a tiny knife. Reminds me of doll house furniture.

Wow, the smallest one is $10 at my local knife store... I was actually gonna go pick it up to put on my keys before I even saw this vid... now I might just have to order it, depends on shipping cost though.

I bought so many of these things.... 3 of each i think and some came very sharp and some came not so sharp, but as you said they sharpen very well.
DJJimCowley 1 year ago
I have a Spyderco bug next to my apartment keys. Useful for very easy cutting tasks and it brings originality to your keyring. However, I'd like to warn future buyers that the steel scatches very easily. Don't let anyone unexperienced with sharpening even try to touch it up. The VG10 on this knife receives scratches like crazy. Excellent knife though apart from that.

Lock-backs suck. My Spyderco's lock failed! Pocket lint got wedged in there just from floating around in my pocket. Went to use the blade to open a box and it nearly cut my finger off. Never again!

I saw a Honeybee at a knife store in Amsterdam while trying to replace the Leek I lost in Poland—€22.
Everything in the store was overpriced by at least 50%, but I laughed out loud.

What do you say when you compare this knife with the Ka-Bar Dozier knife, also with AUS8 steel, also lock back and more than 20$ less?
Great video.

In the sub-compact category the Kershaw OD-2 is an extremely good,
quality and CHEAP knife.
It has a really nice bang-for-the-buck ratio, about the price of the Grasshopper, but made with much bette quality materials.
I ordered one myself. It's definitely worth a try, guys!
I'd like to see a Nutfancy review about it too.
Anyway, thanks for the review, Nutn'!
