...There are many different ways to read into Quran and Mohammed's teachings, and many of them aren't positive. How can you praise such writings as divine, when they can be so flawed and bring so much torment to both - its followers and deniers? If there was a deity responsible, it wouldn't deserve my respect, nor would I feel the need to worship it. You have to admit there is a lot of evil (in modern perception) found in these writings (as with most archaic scriptures).
...Then there is the possibility of these religious beliefs to be untrue, and it all fits together a lot better: scripture is man-written, and as with all literature it can be interpreted differently and therefore there is no absolute truth, just opinions, in this case it's people clinging to mythology, either because they live in underdeveloped societies, or find some of the teachings too good to miss. I know which possibility i find more appealing.
@Vienalgs To be honest, as an educated person (by the way, my education was based in the states and the UK) I do not see any evil or flaw in Islam (I do not like the expression Mohammad's teachings as he was only a messenger conveying a message). If you have anything in mind bring it up on the table to discuss it. Bear in mind please that things related to modern life belong only to our recent life and so it is unfair to apply our century standards to the 7th century ones or vice versa.

if he cited quranic references at the beginning where he states that there should be violence against apostates and such then there would be cause for debate because i found nothing which stated this in the quran. i think he dislikes wahabbis but he umbrellas many scholars and doesn't mention their school of thought, of which there are multiple. i agree that there are corruptors who use religion for ulterior motives but this isn't exclusive to islam and it isn't condoned by it either.

So in general I actually like what Pat has to say immensely and am often rolling in laughter at it. But this narrow, insular, provincial bullshit about not wanting to learn languages is a bit much. Apart from the Qur'an Arabic is also useful for communicating with 300 million people. I'm a Euro-American and a staunch secularist but I've taken the effort to learn Arabic and the world would be a much better place if we spent more time talking to rather than at/about each other.

Fundamentalist islamic groups thrive in the middle east and africa, the KKK on the other hand does not have very much support. Christianity is pretty much done with their extremism and influential powers which began in the dark ages and is near extinct now. islam has been around for 1400 years and in that time we have set to see any reforms. it will take a long time for islam to catch up with the modern world and we need to recognize that.

So, this issue is a political one and goes back to leadership rather than an islamic legislation. A clear and accurate reading to the verses mentioned below say it all. I would recommend that you read about Abdullah ibn Abi Alsarh who left Islam and what the prophet did to him when he conquered Makkah. Just tell me one name whom Muhammad had killed because of Apostasy.

Islamic law also treats on Muslims as 2nd class citizens.. Did you know if a non Muslim goes to Mecca they are KILLED, preach another religion you are KILLED-not one church or synagogue is allowed in

Egyptian Christians churches/houses burned, Christians attacked, Egyptian army KILLED peaceful protesters-Christians have no rights or compensation. Christians in Iraq are now persecuted and being eliminated-there are almost NO Christians left in Bethlehem because of persecution by Muslims.

4. Regarding beating women, what about this (The best among you are the best to their wives) [Altermithy & Ibn Majah]. Muslims are commanded to be of a good behaviour especially to the closest ones such as wife and parents. The verse you mentioned talks about the Nashez woman. Apparently, as others do not know what “Nashez” mean! Then how dare you talk of things you do not know?

@TaylorMonica1 we will need to examine the behavior associated with a particular dogma.. reading the quran itself is useless, we only need to see what quranic teaching produces.. we can do this on the aggregate .. (e.g. women's rights under islamic governance..) that would be a good place to start.

Differences are only in legislations. Other religions have been distorted severely over the ages. And so God has sent his final messenger to abrogate and correct the fallacy in these distorted religions and He the Almighty may do whatever He wishes. Mohammad also asked his adopted son to divorce his wife so he could marry her, and because of that he made adoption illegal in Islam. Mohammad saw Aisha when she was a baby & said he would marry her. He married Aisha when she was 6, had sex between her thighs, and consummated sex when she was 9 yrs old.

Continued.. I, as a Muslim, pay full respect to others and offer the help when needed regardless to faith or ethnic background. At the same time I feel annoyed when disrespected. "And We have certainly honored the children of Adam " (17:70). And because of this I would never wish that other do not exist, I would rather wish that they are guided and find the straight path.

...There are many different ways to read into Quran and Mohammed's teachings, and many of them aren't positive. How can you praise such writings as divine, when they can be so flawed and bring so much torment to both - its followers and deniers? If there was a deity responsible, it wouldn't deserve my respect, nor would I feel the need to worship it. You have to admit there is a lot of evil (in modern perception) found in these writings (as with most archaic scriptures).

...Then there is the possibility of these religious beliefs to be untrue, and it all fits together a lot better: scripture is man-written, and as with all literature it can be interpreted differently and therefore there is no absolute truth, just opinions, in this case it's people clinging to mythology, either because they live in underdeveloped societies, or find some of the teachings too good to miss. I know which possibility i find more appealing.

@Vienalgs To be honest, as an educated person (by the way, my education was based in the states and the UK) I do not see any evil or flaw in Islam (I do not like the expression Mohammad's teachings as he was only a messenger conveying a message). If you have anything in mind bring it up on the table to discuss it. Bear in mind please that things related to modern life belong only to our recent life and so it is unfair to apply our century standards to the 7th century ones or vice versa.
