Not only a total rip off but the Airforce actually has the nerve to denie that the song is stolen. There excuse being "Oh the advertisement aggency we hired for the commercial came up with it." Oh so what they are saying is, as long as an advertisement company makes it then its ok to steal an artist's music. Pffft when will the military in general learn they cant just go breaking copyright laws, when a musician cant even get away with it. its wrong.
I am glad they stood up, however too all of you blaming the Air Force, you do realize that they send out to a advertising company to make the commercial. The Air Force itself has nothing to do with the making of the commercial, all they do is pay for one to be made. The people you need to be pissed at, is the advertising company that actually made the video.
@Sketchtool Sketch im sorry but thats no excuse. Hiding behind the company is cowardly, Still want to join the Airforce. eg. Hey let go to do this wrong thing that we will get in trouble for. You get busted. You Tell your C.O it was another soldiers Idea.
Is that acceptable, no. So Why irregardless of the fact they hired a company, they dont review the ad before they spend the money for a superbowl ad. Copyright infringement is infringement. And its not like it was a back water song no one knew
@Nikolai00X Well, you example is slightly wrong. In this case it would be like punishing the Air Force for a contractor (ie Dino Corps, XO, Blackwater, Alpah & Omega, Haliburton, etc.) foxtrot uniform. I am sure the Air Force probably had people review it as well, however, chances unless they are having some low-grade enlisted person reviewing, it would not even be recognized. Remember it is most likely upper-brass reviewing (probably O-5 or above) nd unless it was a Dylan or Sinatra, the...
Air Force Official: "Hmm... Seems we need a song for our new commercial to pester the masses into joining something they don't want to join. What can we do?"
Other Air Force Official: "Let's re-do a song by that Stripes band from Detroit, badly! They'll never notice!"
Anyone know how the case turned out? I think Jack White has every right to sue. It's blatant plagiarism on the USAFR'S part. Stick it to those thieves Jack!
haha, it sounds all cheesy like a bloopers reel music or something. it's amazing how little they changed the song and still managed to totally f-ing destroy it
i like how everyone who takes issue with the war is careful to not upset the soldiers.. guess what? fuck the soldiers. going to kill brown people in exchange for college money? that's called a mercenary. the founding fathers would shit red blood diarrhea if they were alive to see this...this JOKE. every enlisted man i've ever met, people I knew from high school in college, have revealed that their true motive for joining up is some variation of playing a real life halo game. no sympathy
@rustyrim17 is that seriously your comeback to this? That has nothing to do with this issue. You comment is deemed dumb now and White Stripes obviously win in this because the guy who "composed" it already apologized. So no Air Force, you lose.
Obvious rip off - I first heard this song when it came out years back. That being said, listening to this song for YEARS and knowing it like the back of my hand, THIS IS AN OBVIOUS RIP OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To be fair, compare The White Stripes - Fell in Love With a Girl to The Pretenders - Middle of the Road. I don't believe Jack meant intentionally to mimic The Pretenders, but the ad company which did this Super Bowl ad for the US Air Force is a blatant rip off of The White Stripes.
The beginning they only made one change (they put guitar instead of saying fell in love with a girl) But at the end you hear jack going la,la,la,la,la,la
Fuck these people
P.S. Stripes are the best i also like the raconteurs jacks other band
I agree with gxxdmxn I'm, one of the White Stripes biggest fans and the way these people just took fell in love with a girl and said its not the stripes well fuck them. Its the same chords and all
@DJDFTDAV not only is it the same chords, looks like all they did was take an instrumental version and recorded a crappy solo (in the Melodie of the song no less)
Its the same b-a-d-e progression, slight timing difference. Obviously a rip-off. Astonishes me that they put this on during a super bowl and thought that no-one would notice. Its not as if the white stripes are unknown. Audacious move by the U.S air force, though they are soldiers.

hey the air force didnt steal anything they hired a production company to make a commercial and thats what happend like most people the air force members responsible for approving this commercial probably have never heard of the stripes.
That would still be copyright infringement, and illegal. The production company should have known the origin of the song, and were wrong in using it in the commercial. Jack White should sue their asses. Fuck the US.
When this aired, I played my guitar and sang along with it. Its not EXACTLY the same but it definatly has the exact chord progressions, tempo, and drum pattern. Its like a really lame cover.Fuck the air force, they need to pay jack and meg mad bank for stealing their song and using it to supply the world with bullshit.
I'm all for The White Stripes but I have a feeling they're going to lose this one. The chords are just slightly different. Just the smallest bit will probably help them get away with it.
You can hear the guitar "say" FILWAG...or maybe it's my mind making that leap. Either way SOMEBODY totally ripped off TWS...and man, heads are gonna roll! 'It's called Karate, man. Only two kinds of people know it, The Chinese and The King. And one of them is me'.
Yeah I heard about this but did not actually see it until now. The song definately is a ripoff of FILWAG, the only difference is that lead guitar instead of vocals which are the same notes.
It's not just the guitar riff that is the same, the drums come in at exactly the same time as in the white stripes song and the drum beat is exactly the same. Count six seconds just about at the start of the song and then the drums come in, the exact same for both versions. Looks like the air force got sold a rehashed version of a song =O
@ ThisIsNotVincent-Yeah, and those same exact chords and riffs have been used millions of times by everybody that's ever picked up a guitar. It's just generic noise.
How can people actually contest that that was taken from Fell in Love With a Girl?! The words are out (except for the part at :14, I agree) and they cut and pasted slightly different parts in the music together, but it is definitely the same! ugh
Still I find it very classy that Jack and Meg just requested it be pulled from the air. They took the high road and it seems are not going to take legal action.
And, for what its worth, free publicity is a great thing. They are back in the spotlight for a bit. He and Meg are recording their new album as we speak and this certainly helps.
Why do people keep ripping of the Stripes! Fucking assholes! But I guess it just proves the awesomeness of this band! Btw, did Jack and Meg ever sue Magnum? Btw, this too: watch?v=COHT9vgbAhM
what a bunch of fuckers for ripping off the white stripes song. the air force should at least have the dignity to ask permission. whata bunch of arrogant douche bags.
@riotgrrrrl1288 What, do you think a job in the military is to write fucking songs? They hired a composer to do it, and HE ripped the song off, not the AF Reserve. He's already claimed full responsibility and the Air Force pulled the ad. Don't generalize us all as "arrogant douchebags".
Definitely sounds the same. Still not worth suing over. According to the reasons Jack is suing them for, the damage has been done, and money won't solve anything.
If you were to write a song that was essentially your breakthrough song that basically helped make your career, you would just "let it go" and not sue? Jesus Christ, you are a moron. Just because no one you know has never heard the song before, doesn't make the song non-existent.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Let it go White Stripes, nobody I know knew your song anyway. Now maybe more people might know it if you prove you wrote it. If they do have to pay, give the money to CHARITY. Those men and women in uniform are the bravest and the greatest wherever they are stationed. It does not mean they are recruiting just for a war. We need them everywhere.
This is depressing... This is definitely the White Stripes.
I'll admit there is a fine line where, yes, a lot of music uses the same chords/ rhythm (Nine Inch Nails' 1,000,000 and Green Day's Know Your Enemy opens with very similar drums) but this is totally the same as Fell In Love With A Girl. The riff is so recognizable and, not only that, the lead is the vocal part.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Geez, I'm in the wrong business. All you have to do these days is write simplistic garage-band songs and then wait. Sooner or later, that same simplistic crap will come out again and you can claim a violation. I hereby claim the 12-bar-blues as mine! Use it at your peril!
@bevo65 That's why my comment was voted down so many times, and yours wasn't. Oh, wait... It's a cop-out to say you were being ironic once it's made clear that even people on the internet who waste their time watching Youtube videos think you're an idiot.
@FMASteeb And the fact that you hide behind a bunch of YouTube votes makes you a sniveling wimp. Is it any surprise that a bunch of White Stripes fans voted my comment down? To someone of your meager intellect, it's probably quite a shock. But to normal people, it was to be expected.
@bevo65 Congratulations on your narcissism. Did you learn all of those big words in high school? I'm "hiding behind" a bunch of other people's votes? No... I'm using the opinion of objective observers to show you that you look like a dumbass. You're the one assuming that everyone who comments on this video is a White Stripes fan so you can act like that's the reason they don't like your OP, which, by the way, doesn't automatically make someone's point invalid, the last time I checked.
@FMASteeb Oh, I definitely agree that you're the mental giant here. The one who takes offense at a comment, takes comfort in the fact that others have voted it down, and responds by calling the commenter a "moron." Which brings me to high school. I know your kind. You were the little punk who would crack wise when surrounded by his buddies, then crap himself when confronted by himself. Your parents must be very proud.
@bevo65 First of all, I never said I was a mental giant. I said that you made a comment that others thought was dumb, and then pretended you meant the opposite, and you were a god of ironic observations; everyone else was just too dumb to get it. You against everyone else. Sounds like narcissism again.
Secondly, you don't know me at all. In fact, I could say the same exact thing you said about me based on how you're acting. What, do you think I feel safe because of all these White Stripes fans?
@FMASteeb You have absolutely no ability to focus, do you? Let me recap: I comment that the song at issue is simplistic and IMO not worth getting upset over. I then add an obviously flippant remark about the 12BB. For some reason, you decide to call me a "moron." I call you out. You justify your unprovoked insult by hiding behind the votes of a bunch of strangers ("That's why my comment was voted down ... [nyah nyah]"). I call you out again. You keep trying to change your tack ("narcissist").
@FMASteeb So yeah, I know your kind very very well. I see it all the time. You're an insecure little jerk. You insult everyone, indiscriminately. You insulted me, then you insulted the very people you're hiding behind, calling referring to them as "people on the internet who waste their time watching Youtube videos." You want to talk about narcissism? Okay, let's talk about why you have to elevate yourself through name-calling.
@FMASteeb PS, you dumb ass, this vid was posted by an obvious fan of the White Stripes. Take a look around. It's a pretty safe assumption that this page is viewed by White Stripes fans (including me). I'm sure you'll argue otherwise, but then again, you're not that bright.
@bevo65 And again, I'm saying that just because the people commenting on this video may be White Stripes fans doesn't mean that their opinions about your comment, or whether or not the songs sound alike, are invalid. You seem to think that it's some kind of conflict of interest to like a band, and then try to compare their music to other songs. Your original comment that you were going to copyright a song structure (12-bar blues) had no similarity to two songs with the same melody and harmony.
@bevo65 Your first post was not insightful or clever at all. You've now changed BACK to saying that you don't agree with the White Stripes, your original opinion before I called you out. I'm done with your petty bullshit. You got offended over a youtube comment. You lose. Go home and cry.
Similar, yes. The same, no. It's incredibly similar, but there are very slight variations to the riff. However, they may have a case with that lead guitar mimicking the vocal melody.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm pretty sure 99.9% of all rock uses the same 4 chords. If you're gonna make a 3 or 4 chord progression, there are only so many options. Try something besides power chords and see what that does for you...
Chord progression is the same, drum beat is the same, and the lead guitar lick on top is the melody to "Fell in Love with a Girl". What else is there to say?
i just think is funny that 90 percent of everyone complaining probably illegally downloads their crappy music of the internet so they dont got room to talk. i think white stripes should just take a midol and get over it
What, do you guys think a job in the military is to write fucking songs? They hired a composer to do it and HE ripped the song off, not the AF Reserves. He's already claimed full responsibility.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I never heard of that song before, so I would not have known. It is all about the buck to some people. Give it a break Stripes and suck it up. No one signs up for the armed services because of a song.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I hear songs that I like and know or don't know in ads, but that doesn't make me want to buy or pay attention to what they are selling because of a song. It is the message of the product that makes me want to buy or use that product. I heard that song and it does not make me want to sign up for the Air Force. So let's agree to disagree. A song does not make anyone do anything they do not want to do. :) P.S. What is so stupid? Not all ads have music.
whether the ad makes you want to join the air force or not is not the point. the white stripes put time and effort into creating something, and the composer hired to put music to the commercial took that song, changed it, and called it his own without the band's permission. it's not about ad effectiveness or suing for money, it's about theft of intellectual property.
No, what i'm saying is that if music played no role in advertising, why would advertisers place music in their adverts. In response to your statement that, 'not all ads have music', true, but - come on. A very high amount of advertising has music. Music plays a very important role in altering the recipient's mood.
And by simply saying 'let it go' is so unfair on the white stripes.
Meh... the chord progression is nearly identical, but the lead guitar is just dissimilar enough that I might take the author at his word that it was unintentional. If the song had been used in a Barack Obama spot and not one related to the military, nobody would even care. Get over it.
suing isn't over the top. if artists don't protect their work, it's used without their permission for uses that it was never intended for. if it wasn't the fucking air force idk if the stripes would be so pissed. it's like the coldplay and the stevie ray vaughn or whatever guitarist that was that got ripped off.
Do you download free or pay for CD's? I bet you have not purchased a CD in a long time and use free downloads. So that is not really supporting a group either, if you don't buy it. Does your web page pay for the music you play on it? No I don't think so. Get over it.
i don't understand your logic... but all the more reason to sue when your music is stolen in the public eye. i buy cds actually. as a musician i feel that music is a performance art above all things. i support by going to concerts when i can. there's a lot more satisfaction for an artist when there's a good crowd rather than just good record sales.
Nobody? It got tons of radio and MTV play when it came out. It won an MTV breakthrough video award. They played it live on the MTV Movie Awards and on Letterman. Joss Stone did a cover of it that received a lot of air play. But you are right.. nobody has ever heard it.
Are you kidding me? Fell in Love With a Girl was number 12 on the U.S. Billboard Modern Rock Tracks in 2004. Just because you're ignorant doesn't mean we all are.
while i agree that jack should be upset of the obvious rip off for a cause he doesnt support, i think he should be satisfied that they take it down and apologize, and not press charges for monetary gain. im sure has more than enough money, and it just doesn't seem like the right thing to do.
Those are the EXACT same chords as Jack's song. The lead guitar in the commercial is almost mimicking Jack's vocal notes as well. Wow, I didn't think it was going to be so blatant.
I kinda hear it, but it sounds like typical cheesy fake rock music, unless you know what to listen for, then it's like oh yeah... Fell in love with a girl
yeah, i mean it's pretty standard rock music, it's not a particularly distinctive song to begin with. i wonder how many crate diggers know jack white's dirty little secrets.
it's hardly the most complicated song in the world, probably fairly easy to do. imagine if the ramones tried to sue everyone who used the I-IV-V chord sequence.
Music copyright is a joke anyways. Bunch of overpaid crappy artists complaining about people stealing "their" music. I can't think of a more ridiculous idea than calling a group of audible sounds your own.
A quote from Kem Kraft who "wrote" the song for this ad. The USAF wasn't involved in the creation of this song.
Kraft went on to say that if the White Stripes want to call me and talk to me, as far as Im concerned, Im responsible for this. Just me... Im pretty much a one-man band here. It doesnt have anything to do with the Air Force. They didnt know anything, and I didnt know anything either.
yea exactly identical it's really unfortunate that people aren't standing up for this obvious rip-off just because of legal stuff. it's not fair to such a good band as the white stripes. And who cares if the guy is standing up and saying "i did this, call me, my fault...etc..." He did it in the first place he gosh darn knew what he was doing.

Let it go White Stripes, nobody I know knew your song anyway. Now maybe more people might know it if you prove you wrote it. If they do have to pay, give the money to CHARITY.

Geez, I'm in the wrong business. All you have to do these days is write simplistic garage-band songs and then wait. Sooner or later, that same simplistic crap will come out again and you can claim a violation. I hereby claim the 12-bar-blues as mine! Use it at your peril!
bevo65 1 year ago
Seeing as how you can do tons of melodies with a 12-bar blues format, and only THIS melody with THIS melody... Your comment makes you a moron.

@bevo65 That's why my comment was voted down so many times, and yours wasn't. Oh, wait... It's a cop-out to say you were being ironic once it's made clear that even people on the internet who waste their time watching Youtube videos think you're an idiot.
FMASteeb 11 months ago

FMASteeb 11 months ago
@FMASteeb Oh, I definitely agree that you're the mental giant here. The one who takes offense at a comment, takes comfort in the fact that others have voted it down, and responds by calling the commenter a "moron." Which brings me to high school. I know your kind. You were the little punk who would crack wise when surrounded by his buddies, then crap himself when confronted by himself. Your parents must be very proud.
bevo65 11 months ago
@bevo65 First of all, I never said I was a mental giant. I said that you made a comment that others thought was dumb, and then pretended you meant the opposite, and you were a god of ironic observations; everyone else was just too dumb to get it. You against everyone else. Sounds like narcissism again.
Secondly, you don't know me at all. In fact, I could say the same exact thing you said about me based on how you're acting. What, do you think I feel safe because of all these White Stripes fans?
FMASteeb 11 months ago
@FMASteeb You have absolutely no ability to focus, do you? Let me recap: I comment that the song at issue is simplistic and IMO not worth getting upset over. I then add an obviously flippant remark about the 12BB. For some reason, you decide to call me a "moron." I call you out. You justify your unprovoked insult by hiding behind the votes of a bunch of strangers ("That's why my comment was voted down ... [nyah nyah]"). I call you out again. You keep trying to change your tack ("narcissist").
bevo65 11 months ago
@FMASteeb So yeah, I know your kind very very well. I see it all the time. You're an insecure little jerk. You insult everyone, indiscriminately. You insulted me, then you insulted the very people you're hiding behind, calling referring to them as "people on the internet who waste their time watching Youtube videos." You want to talk about narcissism? Okay, let's talk about why you have to elevate yourself through name-calling.
bevo65 11 months ago
@FMASteeb PS, you dumb ass, this vid was posted by an obvious fan of the White Stripes. Take a look around. It's a pretty safe assumption that this page is viewed by White Stripes fans (including me). I'm sure you'll argue otherwise, but then again, you're not that bright.
bevo65 11 months ago
@bevo65 And again, I'm saying that just because the people commenting on this video may be White Stripes fans doesn't mean that their opinions about your comment, or whether or not the songs sound alike, are invalid. You seem to think that it's some kind of conflict of interest to like a band, and then try to compare their music to other songs. Your original comment that you were going to copyright a song structure (12-bar blues) had no similarity to two songs with the same melody and harmony.
FMASteeb 11 months ago
@bevo65 Your first post was not insightful or clever at all. You've now changed BACK to saying that you don't agree with the White Stripes, your original opinion before I called you out. I'm done with your petty bullshit. You got offended over a youtube comment. You lose. Go home and cry.
FMASteeb 11 months ago
@FMASteeb Yeah, that's what I figured. Bye bye, girlie-man. You won't be missed.

I'm pretty sure 99.9% of all rock uses the same 4 chords. If you're gonna make a 3 or 4 chord progression, there are only so many options. Try something besides power chords and see what that does for you...

Well that's stupid - if nobody is influenced by the song, why would anyone put music in their adverts??
grassy88 1 year ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
I hear songs that I like and know or don't know in ads, but that doesn't make me want to buy or pay attention to what they are selling because of a song. It is the message of the product that makes me want to buy or use that product. I heard that song and it does not make me want to sign up for the Air Force. So let's agree to disagree. A song does not make anyone do anything they do not want to do. :) P.S. What is so stupid? Not all ads have music.
payge30 1 year ago
whether the ad makes you want to join the air force or not is not the point. the white stripes put time and effort into creating something, and the composer hired to put music to the commercial took that song, changed it, and called it his own without the band's permission. it's not about ad effectiveness or suing for money, it's about theft of intellectual property.
ethuhmastuh 1 year ago 3
No, what i'm saying is that if music played no role in advertising, why would advertisers place music in their adverts. In response to your statement that, 'not all ads have music', true, but - come on. A very high amount of advertising has music. Music plays a very important role in altering the recipient's mood.
And by simply saying 'let it go' is so unfair on the white stripes.
grassy88 1 year ago
Meh... the chord progression is nearly identical, but the lead guitar is just dissimilar enough that I might take the author at his word that it was unintentional. If the song had been used in a Barack Obama spot and not one related to the military, nobody would even care. Get over it.

suing isn't over the top. if artists don't protect their work, it's used without their permission for uses that it was never intended for. if it wasn't the fucking air force idk if the stripes would be so pissed. it's like the coldplay and the stevie ray vaughn or whatever guitarist that was that got ripped off.
crunge91 1 year ago
Do you download free or pay for CD's? I bet you have not purchased a CD in a long time and use free downloads. So that is not really supporting a group either, if you don't buy it. Does your web page pay for the music you play on it? No I don't think so. Get over it.
payge30 1 year ago
i don't understand your logic... but all the more reason to sue when your music is stolen in the public eye. i buy cds actually. as a musician i feel that music is a performance art above all things. i support by going to concerts when i can. there's a lot more satisfaction for an artist when there's a good crowd rather than just good record sales.
