You can fire a .223 round in a rifle chambered for 5.56. But in most cases not the other way around. A lot of newer manufactured rifles chambered for .223 are also capable of firing the NATO round. Manufacturers did this due to the large aping of surplus military ammunition being sold.

Oh. Forgot to finish about his 'm14'. The rifle. He has is a Springfield M1A that has be set up as a m14 clone. Still a fine fine firearm.

When the M16 was first put into manufacture and use it was chambered in the then new .223 rem round. NATO later adopted this round and designated it the 5.56X45 NATO. The m14 as used in Korea and Vietnam was select fire semi-auto/ full auto/ single shoot and this weapon is currently use in the US military as a sharpshooter weapon. The military version can not be owned by a civilian with out a special permit from the ATF.
