In any case, saying that it is "just" a pentatonic does not detract from what the bass line adds to the music - it's a great bass line regardless of haw you classify its pitches.

The studio version to me sounded like they came up with a good song via traditional instruments and then Thom was all like "we have to be different guys! lets use loops, synths and a bunch of effects". The end product was a very stiff song that completely lacked dynamics. Unlike this version which is just plain brilliant.
