The deal is- they discuss the "unscientific" nature of magazine tests back in the day and then repeat that approach here by choosing apples and oranges car comparisons in terms of the way each car is equipped as well the size of the cars. The AMX would be better matched against a Corvette or against pony cars. The other cars need to be similarly geared and engined as well as set up with similar suspension options to be meaningful. The tire smoking rating was totally superfluous.
They picked a Hemi,454 LS-6,Olds H/O 455 and the buick 455 stage 1.But with the Pontiac they picked the 400 RA III and not the RA IV.I guess since the RA IV car beat them all last time they chose the lesser of the Pontiac engine to make it fair. Plus they couldn't picked a heavier buick then a convertible skylark with air.
unfortunatley a lot of these cars didn't really have good performance options, the chevelle had 3.31 posi and a turbo 400, they should've got one with 4.11's and a m22
@09corvettezr1 The GTO was the standard RA III with a hyd cam with a .413 lift. Compared to the chevelle ,520 solid lifter camshaft, alum intake, square port heads with 450 hp,on paper it should have been a low 13 car. A RA III is more comparable to a 396 cubic inch wise, and 383 in mopars.
@390fe390 That is indeed impressive... it sounds like The "Boss-9" was a little under-rated in its time, but here, the truth "QUICKLY" came out! LONG LIVE THE BOSS!
This Test was BULL SH%T!!!
The Challenger and Mustang were PONY CARS!!!
They should of used a Charger or Road Runner and a Torino or Cyclone

The Boss 429 is a beast! Five seconds to 60 on a car that is 40+ years old is very impressive!
