Just bought a 66 type 1. I noticed the floor pan had ALOT of fresh battery acid. I tried cleaning the mess up with baking soda and water. Then tried removing rust with a wire wheel. Do you know of any better methods? Great vids by the way!
@tospicy4ya Yes you have to have at least a scuffed surface to POR. As far as sandblasting the pan, we do it, just all depends on budget that the customer is willing to shell out.
Looks Good! I'd suggest wearing head phones when cutting and grinding so you can hear your wife yelling at you after spending too much time with your Bug and not with her! Thanks
haha! i did this on my bug, but i didn't have any cut off wheels and i was to antsy to wait to buy new ones, so i cut out the battery tray out with tin snips! lol!
Chris, I have looked up this welder online and found different ones with different apms... do you mind giving me some details on the welder you used? i need to buy one of those!
@bunorah just a basic mig welder from Walmart. Literally! Whatever they had I bought, I think it was like 300.00 or so. They have real cheap ones that did not have a wire feeder to it, but I stayed away from those.
@ShaurntheSheep . He should have finished welding it with small spot welds. With the finished product looking like one whole weld. But done with lots of tiny welds. Unless its welded 100% it will leak and rust out just as bad as it was.Id like to know where this " shop " is so i can avoid at all cost. The guy here did a half assed job by any standard.
Great tip, Chris. One thing I've seen a lot is where the bottoms of the heater channel is rusted out. They have replacements of course... the repair you're doing here is quite similar to patching up under neat that channel too.
Hello, rather than fixing or restoring the floor pan battery in the long term as it get rusted by time, is there any practical preventive method which is used to prevent/lower the battery leakage and hence damaging the pan over the time ?
Thanks, I remember fixing my VW back in the 70s with a streets sign that said 55 MPH. It was when they changed the speed limit to 65mph and signs were around. LOL old days
@zzzdogutube Portions of U.S. Route 83 up here in North Dakota were still 55 mph until a few years ago. I guess I'm old at heart because I still cruise at 55 mph.
if you did a video on fully replacing a floor pan, heater channel out of a bug i will pay 29.99 plus S&H as long as it goes in depth like this video. maybe also rust protection :)
@brighteyefilms I have that Bug Me Video on floorpans & heater channels. This was a good video for just the battery pan. Great video! Thanks for sharing.
or you can spray the pans with oil and throw sand on it... this works like a cement so it will never rust again

@redskinfaithful you are on the right track, just soak that stuff up and get rid of it.

Do u not have to wire brush all the surface rust before using por15?
Would this be the same standard on a show car?
What about sandblasting the pan?

If a remove the body is there any things that you would suggest to do before
MrOeric0 11 months ago
@MrOeric0 yes pick up the floor pan replacement video by the bugmevideo guys DVD. it shows you how to do it correctly.
brighteyefilms 11 months ago
My pans are not rusty and I have pur por15 on them but is there any other tips you have to make sure there is no rust
MrOeric0 11 months ago
@MrOeric0 Well the only sure way is to take the body off the chassis and really inspect everything. Or you have the car dipped.
brighteyefilms 11 months ago
my dad says that wouldn’t do in england it would have to be a continuous weld
ShaurntheSheep 11 months ago
@ShaurntheSheep Yes but a continuous weld will warp the metal from all the heat.

@menetoo Sure, just keeping an eye on your battery or have it sit in its own plastic tray will help. Or get one of those marine batteries.

The PO of my bug pop riveted on an old street sign from the bottom. No paint or sealant.
I guess I should fix it properly sometime.
