  • Well, he DID say that he wanted to 'build something really crazy' and gentlemen - I DO believe that he has succeded! ha ha That is - without a doubt - the most powerful manpack radio system I have ever seen, The weirdest was the HW-101 and small honda generator on a frame backpack - but I think that one was made as a joke.

Thanks for posting! de Ray / W7ASA

  • Bob is having a lot of fun,I would not transmit on that thing but can see on a backpacking trip where you could use something like this,we need more fun in our lives.N4DRR

  • I love Bob's craziness. This is one of the things which makes the hobby as durable, even after 32 years of it as in my case. Since we both have broadcast histories, it'll be cool to talk shop. I sincerely hope to meet him sometime.

  • I think this is very cool, I know health wise it's crazy but I dont think BoB is using this thing normaly, maybe only for quick demo's. Somebody should explore and refine this system, add into it a retractable reel of say 50 ft of cable and a detachable antenna and then you would have the ultimate portable emergency system. Someone can hike with this thing during emergecies then reel out the antenna and be ready to go.

  • FCC man seemed pretty cool, nice project, LiPo batteries are changing a lot of things..

  • and none of his credit cards work LOL

  • @enfieldpolice That reminds me. I once had to get my bank card remagnetized, not due to RF, but a really strong electromagnetic exposure nevertheless. During '98, I worked at a TV station and we still used copious amounts of videotape from M II through 1". The station had a huge bulk tape eraser and I had to use it before recording new material. Once, I forgot to leave my wallet out in the truck, turned it on, and next day when I needed a withdrawal. Having to explain it to the bank? Grrrrr!!

  • This is the HF Pack equivalent of the Manpack Minigun that Jesse Ventura used in Predator. There is no thrill like overkill!! 73 VE4RAI

  • At that power level He will cook the inside of His Noggin and His Nuts

  • That is way cool. Who cares about OSHA ? It s a matter of choice if he wants to use his amp. That is one Kool DUDE!!!!

  • Even at 500 watts this violates RF Exposure regulations.

  • Pretty cool! Best regards from WQ8M / M0GNK

  • OMG, a 2 KW backpack amp for FT-817

  • He used to be a white guy before he put that thing on.

  • innovation should be acknowledged, not derrided

  • This man cannt be too bright.

That much EMF right next to his head cannt be good.

  • Ever heard of RF exposure limits??

o.o Cool never the less but get away from me when you key...

  • Over 2000 watts!!!!!

Im sure his sperm count is very low lolol....

  • It seem like the white guy was making fun of the black ham. Anyways thats alot of power it cant be good for your health mainly your eyes.

  • There are two white guys (Jeff AC4ZO, doing the interview, and Bill Cross W3TN, the FCC guy). And I think they were both were poking fun in an "I can't believe Bob is doing this" kind of way. Which is pretty much everybody's reaction. That power/distance does violate the OSHA guidelines.

  • a friend of mine cooks hotdogs with a 1.7 megawatt linear amp he built

  • 100% Awesome!~

  • Darwin award candidate.

  • Load that baby up, Key down and use that antenna to do Vasectomies on W1s and W2s. in the Dayton Boneyard.

This would keep 20M a little more clear for DX. and thin out some pileups.

we need more 4s. There are not enough 4s.

  • Die laughing!

  • WOW. That is so cool. And the new technology in the Lithium Polymer battery is amazingly small for the power applications too. Simply amazing, thanks KC3VO Bob at the 2009 Dayton Hamfest for the demonstration. Be careful Bob, talk about safety too...LOL I only push at least 100 watts on HF.

  • I see it mostly as a novelty piece. I wouldn't dream of pushing more than 20W that close to my head on a regular basis. I could see the occasional 100W if i really needed to. And even then, i'd want the antenna well above my head, with some shielding.

I could see it as something to take into a disaster area, stoping and setting up an antenna at the end of a long coax to operate anywhere near full power.

But in the end, that kind of power is rarely—if ever—needed.

  • I Love my Ham SMOKED !!!

  • Hey Bob! Loved the video and your backpack!

    You rule!

  • If he's smart enought to build this, my guess he's smart enough to run QRO backback, ;)

  • Anybody think the added soundtrack "music" is a little loud?

  • Nicely presented video. Definitely not the smartest design though.

  • This is going to lead to the worst RF burn in medical history.

  • I hope he doesn't operate RTTY on that unit.

  • Could it be used as a substitute for cancer treatment radiation therapy?

  • a 2 kw radio system on his back. Innovated, yes.

    Smart? No.

Who in their right mind would run 1kw+ with the antenna just inches from your head? Plus there is no counterpoise/rf grounding system on the antenna.

    Can't be good.

  • o_0 --(wow.)

  • He also has or at least last time I saw him a really nice Goldwing with a trailer and a Yaesu Quatra setup in it... Very Cool!!!

  • Thats cool that would be good in my truck when WA6MFJ is jamming me.

  • With a sling shot and a di-pole great portable Ecomm. Put a tarheel "bubba" on there and kill all that rogaine growth!!

  • I've seen 2kw on a motorbike but this is The Business!!!!! :-)))))))

  • I wonder if he has hair left under that cap after a 2kw run !! seems to me it cook a little or stand up nice and straight
