Vachon was a legit badass, everyone in the wrestling biz knew not to fuck with him, and those outside of wrestling ie in bars that wanted to challenge him, are missing an eye today, etc.

Listen closely to the threat he makes Piper at 0:59 (probably just an inside joke at the time), but outside the ring to a stranger he could make it happen if they wanted to start something.

What's ironic is Vachon does the insulting, but Piper compliments him (probably the point).

Now you know why.
