Oh my god, thank you SOOOOOOO much for this post! I've been having this problem for quite a while now and this can really help me! The only benefit to the gross part is that I'll at least know it's MY hair that's in the drain.
If you need to remove your bathtub drain for cleaning or just to replace it with a new one, I have the fast and easy solution for you. Try this amazing new bathtub extractor the EzXtractor. It will only take you a few minutes to remove and replace the drain. No plumber costs just the satifaction of being able to do a good job fast.
Mine is also the type without a slot for a screwdriver. The threaded shaft (that moves up and down to open and close the stopper) is affixed to the drain so only the stopper/cap comes off. Don't remove the little handle from the top of the cap. Set the cap in the closed position and gently turn counterclockwise a few turns, and the stopper will lift off.
This is a good video on how to clear this type of drain, but viewers should not put the top nut (or any other small pieces) down next to the drain when they are working as shown in the video. Small parts can fall down the drain. This rule holds for any plumbing work around drains.
this was extremely helpful and I was able to remove the fake chrome topper. But underneath I see a slot for a flat head. But you would need a giant one for this slot, nothing I have will work and I do not want to strip it. Can anyone help?
our drain does not have the screw in the middle its just a metal rod type thing and we have to hold it with pliers of some sort to turn but its not turning
Someone else posted that they couldn't find the screwdriver slot in the middle. Mine didn't have that either. Just tighten around the entire middle piece after removing the top and unscrew it.
I have this same stopper but when I try to unscrew the bottem part it wont budge, I even checked for the little screw that some have and I don't have one, it just wont come off, what can I do?
Great video... Mine didn't have a screw under the spin-off cap either (more like a smooth bolt-head... weird.)
Instead, I just used a thick screwdriver and "popped" it off... Better that then not getting to the clog... All the drain-O in the world wasn't going to clear the stoppage...
@vibrantjourney Zomg my mom was on my youtube acount looking for thing because my cat practicly owns my bath tub and it was clogged so they were trying to fix it........... Lol :P
I'm in college and had no idea what to do, since this is something my dad usually does...lol GROSS. Thank you! Now I can take a shower without the water reaching my knees!
Thank you thank you thank you! I Googled high and low for this info, and it seems like every DIY site out there teaches how to undo every other type of drain stop except this one. It's so easy, but if you don't know the secret and are afraid of breaking something you end up opening the drain stop 500 times hoping it will do something different. You are the man!
@devastateurface You do that too? Trying something over and over hoping it behaves different the next time. Optimistic aren't we. Didn't help in this case for me either. Glad you got that drain opened up, enjoy.
@donscott67 I'm not sure if there is a way to remove it. Need to another video where I use a paperclip or hanger to get at more. Thanks for commenting.
Oh my dear lord thank you sooo much! My husband is off on business and I need this done STAT. Now that I know how to get the stopper out, I am good to go. THANK YOU SOOO MUCH. P.S. Your Commentary is hilarious. LOVE IT!

thanks so much, i live in apartment and i had no idea how to clean this thing! i know i could have called maintenance but they take forever to reply to service calls. now i can do this myself. thanks!
I have a Moen pop up bathtub stopped in my combination shower jacuzzi bathtub. I NEED to get the stopper out so I can fix a clog but it won't budge! I have removed the top but there is no place for me to put a screwdriver so I can twist and remove the main component of the drain. I also cannot find a screw beneath the main plate where I can twist and then remove the whole thing.
Some of you may not have this exact type of stopper although it may look like the one in this video. If this is the case, check out the YouTube video by dtrebacz: "How to remove Moen popup bathtub drain stopper" I can't post the link unfortunately.

I was able to get it off! I just muscled through with the channel locks. I met with a lot of resistence, to the point I thought it was going to break. But after two full roations, it loosened enough for me to unscrew with my hands. Thanks got getting me going with this video and the helpful comments. I made a video of the assembly underneath on my tub that has no place for a screwdriver, and I'll try to figure out how to post it to this string of comments.
@salamandermusic I saw your video response and it is now posted here as a video response. Everyone should check it out prior to starting on their drain in case it is like yours. Very helpful. Thanks.

Wanted to say thank you for posting this video. It turns out that I am a visual learner (nothing new here), after going though a few forums and help articles I decided to go for the video approach, and can't thank you enough for the cyber help.
I just want to say thank you so much for this video!! It helped me so much! I will be saving it on my favorites so I can always come back to it when I need it!
Thanks man you helped me solve the problem with the bath in my wife's bathroom which had been bugging me for ages. There was actually a metal chain wrapped around the stopper shaft so no wonder it was holding up the drain. Now my wife thinks I'm a handyman genius for fixing it myself :)
LOL, I WATCHED THIS VIDEO AND WENT TO THE SHOWER AND UNCLOGGED MY DRAIN ALL BY MYSELF CAUSE UR VIDEO HELPED ME OUT ALOT! IM SO EXCITED! THEIR WAS SOOOO MUCH HAIR! EWWWW! THANKS ALOT FOR YOUR HELP!! LIVING WITH 3 GIRLS CAN BE RUFF! HAHAHAH THX : )
As a single mom I thank you HUGELY for making this video. My lift-and-turn was a little different in that the knob on the top doesn't actually come off, I had to pull up on the top to reveal a little screw underneath. Grabbed my screwdriver and all I had to do was lefty-loosey that screw and the top came off the post revealing one of the grossest things I've seen in years. Needlenose pliers to the rescue! And you're right, there's much more there than you'd think at first glance. YAY for DIY!!!
@vibrantjourney The funniest thing is that when I asked my landlord how to do it years ago, he said "oh just call me, you need a special tool to get that cover off" -- and then when I actually get down there and look for myself the "special tool" required was a phillips screwdriver, lol. Like a single woman wouldn't know what such a device was, let alone possess one. XD
Just want to share this for anyone having a similar issue. Mine didn't have any screws when the top is off.. it just had a flat tip in there which confused the heck out of me. Later, after days of research I found somewhere that you just have to lift the stopper like 1/8th of an inch and turn anti-clockwise.. just turn with some force(i used my hands) and voila, its coming out.. thats it... clean your dirt and water flows merrily. Hope this helps someone like it did for me.
Man I love you tube, instant knowledge... I need to clean my tub, can't get the stopper off, seconds on you tube and bam I'm in business. Thanks for posting this vid for the plumbing ignoramus such as myself.
@Knamic Glad it helped. I too am a "plumbing ignoramus" and felt like more of an ignoramus after realizing how much we'd spent in the past to get something quite simple done. I like saving the cost of a plumber for when I really need their help.
My stopper is all one piece... the top doesn't unscrew. I found out how to remove it if you have one like mine: Close the stopper and while it's closed turn it counterclockwise. After a few full turns, it will be released and the whole stopper then comes off.
I have this same drain...both my bathtubs and in particular the one in the master bedroom are both draining slow. It takes almost a day for 1 just to drain from a bath. I'm having a hard time turning that second piece but I'm gonna keep trying because its so annoying. Thanks for the vid.
you have no idea how long iv tried to figure that out! finally i felt like an idiot typing "how to take out a bathtub drain" on google. thanks so much!!! :D lol you can imagine what the drain looked like with a household with nothing but girls!
Oh thank God I came across this. I worked on this thing for an hour before I gave up and went online, found message boards, but nothing made sense until I came upon this video. Drain unclogged. Time for a beer. Thank you.
THANK YOU! I have a brand new house that isn't even a year old. I was scared that something was wrong with the tub when it was installed or something. Turns out I just have really long hair that was all caught under the stopper.
WARNING! KOHLER cast iron tubs mayNOT use this exact type of stopper. The Kohler plug I have (or had) is ALL one PIECE and there is a set screw that you can loosen underneath the stopper. Examine your plug closely to insure it is not all one piece or you'll end up like me.
@LionheartRix If you take off your ring, be sure you put it in a safe place. Nowhere near the drain. Or somewhere else you might lose it -- I'm still reminded of the day I lost a wedding ring. Not fun.
Thanks!!!!! On mine, after i got the top part off (had to use BIG adjustable pliers, small ones didn't work) There was no screw under it, instead i had to turn the thing you put the screw driver into. I found a piece of paper or something like paper, covering half the drain, i removed it and any "gunk", cleaned up the parts and put some Vaseline on the threads, put everything back and it drains fast as normal now! Thanks!
I tried this and failed. It turns out, my plug looks EXACTLY the same except all I had to do to take it out was close it and turn counterclockwise. Without tools, using my own bare hands. Voila!
thanks for this! just cleaned out my bathtub drain in my new place of what has to be at least a decade worth of hair. everything is working perfectly!
Thanks! I used to be able to just twist the crazy thing out but lately I just keep turning and turning and it doesn't get out of there.
Now tomorrow I'll be pulling my wife's hair out of the drain.... yeck!! It always feels like I'm pulling hair from somebody's head stuck in the drain BLECK!!!!
What if the channel locks don't work? I have been working on this for 15 minutes - it is stuck and all the channel locks do is scrape up the stopper. This doesn't work for me at all. There must be another way to get this stopper off.
Thank you Youtube and vibrantjourney! When in doubt,Youtube it out!Gotta love the day and age we live in.I can sleep in peace tonight! Thanks again! No more foot baths with our showers!
I'm a 20 yr. old master of the universe now, as I've done this myself with my hands and a butter-knife. I had no idea how to get that stupid stopper off! Thank you so much for this, my roommate and I are very grateful :)
Thanks so much. I had no idea how to remove the stopper...I had been buying a little plastic tool to stick down the drain. Now no need to buy those...I can just use the tools I already had. I just did it and it took only a few minutes for this mom!
Simple! Great Vid.

@salamandermusic I saw your video response and it is now posted here as a video response. Everyone should check it out prior to starting on their drain in case it is like yours. Very helpful. Thanks.

I unscrewed the cap and underneath is a flat metal piece, no place for a screwdriver. There is also no screw on the shaft underneath. I'm stumped. I've tried putting it back together and just unscrewing counterclockwise with the whole assembly, as described in other videos, it just spins. Help!

Wanted to say thank you for posting this video. It turns out that I am a visual learner (nothing new here), after going though a few forums and help articles I decided to go for the video approach, and can't thank you enough for the cyber help.

Thanks man you helped me solve the problem with the bath in my wife's bathroom which had been bugging me for ages. There was actually a metal chain wrapped around the stopper shaft so no wonder it was holding up the drain. Now my wife thinks I'm a handyman genius for fixing it myself :)

@loamo08 Glad it helped. I love everyone's story. Perhaps we should get pics of everyone's drain glob -- nah, too disgusting. :)

DaysFlyBy007 11 months ago
@DaysFlyBy007 Another great story and tips for others. Perhaps we should be collecting photos to see just how gross these collections can get. :)
vibrantjourney 11 months ago
@vibrantjourney The funniest thing is that when I asked my landlord how to do it years ago, he said "oh just call me, you need a special tool to get that cover off" -- and then when I actually get down there and look for myself the "special tool" required was a phillips screwdriver, lol. Like a single woman wouldn't know what such a device was, let alone possess one. XD
DaysFlyBy007 11 months ago

Knamic 1 year ago
@Knamic Glad it helped. I too am a "plumbing ignoramus" and felt like more of an ignoramus after realizing how much we'd spent in the past to get something quite simple done. I like saving the cost of a plumber for when I really need their help.
vibrantjourney 11 months ago
My stopper is all one piece... the top doesn't unscrew. I found out how to remove it if you have one like mine: Close the stopper and while it's closed turn it counterclockwise. After a few full turns, it will be released and the whole stopper then comes off.

@Jeff3210 Cool, sounds simple -- once you know the secret. Thanks for posting, I'm sure it will help many people.

I have this same drain...both my bathtubs and in particular the one in the master bedroom are both draining slow. It takes almost a day for 1 just to drain from a bath. I'm having a hard time turning that second piece but I'm gonna keep trying because its so annoying. Thanks for the vid.

@lisa9047 Wow, a whole day -- keep trying. Check out all the comments. Others have noted their unique situations, one may be similar to yours.

WARNING! KOHLER cast iron tubs mayNOT use this exact type of stopper. The Kohler plug I have (or had) is ALL one PIECE and there is a set screw that you can loosen underneath the stopper. Examine your plug closely to insure it is not all one piece or you'll end up like me.
dwb2dwb2 1 year ago
@dwb2dwb2 You should post a video reply so people can see how your stopper works.
vibrantjourney 1 year ago
Thank you SOOO much! I just couldn't figure this out... good video.
PS> Take off your ring(s) before trying this.
LionheartRix 1 year ago
@LionheartRix If you take off your ring, be sure you put it in a safe place. Nowhere near the drain. Or somewhere else you might lose it -- I'm still reminded of the day I lost a wedding ring. Not fun.
vibrantjourney 1 year ago
Thanks!

Thanks so much. I had no idea how to remove the stopper...I had been buying a little plastic tool to stick down the drain. Now no need to buy those...I can just use the tools I already had. I just did it and it took only a few minutes for this mom!
