you know when to add or subtract depending on the number sign... for example he subtracted five because it was positive. if it was -5+2x, he would have added 5...

@danman745 i dont really know, but in my algebra book, there is what is called Case 1 and Case 2. Case one is the first equation seen in this video, and Case two is the second equation in this video. So yeah!

but i think you do two equations because sometimes you have to plot them in the graph if ur asked to and it shows you what the relationship between the two equations. either they are an "and" or an "or"

@NewYork17 Because an absolute value could be negative OR positive. Absolute value is just a marker that could mean negative or positive. It just means the distance from zero is regular units.

in simpler terms, you want to make the x(or any other variable) stand alone. so add or subtract on both sides of the = sign
