One of the last films of any genre to have an overture. I've been looking for this for a while. Thanks!

Eerie and amazing that at 1.15 that lilt in the music foreshadows the theme music James Horner would use in Star Trek 2 and 3!

When my Dad passed, I chose this as the music before the priest gave his eulogy.
Still gets to me 7 years on.

This really inspires a sense of wonder about the cosmos. Thank you Jerry Goldsmith.

I'm creating a Sci-Fi adventure myself someday. And I'm thinking about creating an overture similar to this one. An overture inspired by this one. :)

Thanks for uploading this, I can remember hearing the overture before the movie from my VHS copy. Is it still contained on the DVD and Bluray versions? Well, if not, the piece is called 'Ilia's Theme' on the soundtrack.

The overture was put back in the movie for the director's cut version I saw from the DVD box set which has the first 10 Star Trek movies.
For the director's cut they this simple flying through space past stars effect instead of a blank screen.
The part at the end of the overture where the song suddenly resolves to main theme is beautiful. It gives me goosebumps.

@Kefka44 For memory it was about $125-$150 when I bought it as a gift for someone 3 years ago. It may be on Blu-Ray now too
