There's a street in a small town in southern Spain that I measured at 37%-38%, I'm planning to try and ride up it shortly... I'm also going to submit it as a candidate for the record. It too has stairs up the side. Saw a car parked on it one day and it just looked wrong!
i love this hill i've gone up it quite a few times and to me its not as hard as it looks although it is still tough. i've never actually done it with people though. im 13 right now and i ride a lot... this year is my first one doing the dirty dozen and im exited because its only 3 days away from now!
This "thing" happens every year. It's an epic event. Saturday after Thanksgiving. 10 a.m. start time at the Washington Boulevard Cycling oval. It's an all day affair of fun and climbing over 56 miles.
i live in cleveland so im not so far from there...its impossible to say how id tackle that climb because im sure the film doesnt do it justice..there were some steep hills in NC where i grew up
The people that live at the base have an excellent sense of humor. They actually put in a bay window to watch traffic try to go up it in the winter. It's no miracle to get to the top. Plenty of people do it. The trick is to stay to the right. The left has leaves and heavy moss growing that never leaves. Rookies in the wrong gear do fall over quite a bit. Ride is in about six weeks, Saturday after thanksgiving. Come on out!
So what happens if by some miracle you make it to the top? Do you just fall over and request help to get back down because your legs don't seem to work anymore? In Google Earth Street View, I love the tiny little crash barrier in front of the house directly across the end of the street. If anyone still lives there, those are some very, very brave (or hopelessly optimistic) people.
Steepest possible public road known...and I want to ride it someday on my bike...what is wrong with me? I'm gonna need a few things...including a new set of lance armstrong legs...
Nope, what you need is the sense to start in an easy gear and ride the same speed. The guys who blazed the first part were in too hard of a gear to continue, and would stop and fall while downshifting so much. Stay in the small chainring, and shift no more than seven cogs in the back.

I still don't think it's 38% because I looked at it in street view on google maps and it looks identical to the Manyunk Wall here in Philly, and that's only around 18%. Maybe it's a 38 degree angle witch sounds a lot more realistic.

38% grade really? Even with a compact set of gears i don't thinks it's possible. I have never heard of anyone riding up anything more than around 30%. Plus these guuys riding standing up with backpacks on that fast no way it's 38% grade.
can someone tell me how rough the cobble stone is? i want to longboard it haha

Did people really just fall going up a hill? I'm sure this isn't an easy climb, but never the less it is a short hill on concrete.
Hughbhurt 2 years ago
Hugh, so I am guessing that you were one of the 180+ that joined us on SAT to ride this "short hill on concrete".
mowreraj 2 years ago
concrete which changes to cobblestone. As it gets steeper

Does this thing happen every year? Rain or shine? Always the Saturday after Thanksgiving? What time does it start?

38 degree angle equals to a 78 percent gradient.
mados73 3 years ago
It's actually about 37% gradient which comes out to 20.3 degree gradient.
