I believe he genuinely tried to find his way and do what was right and may have felt like such a failure for not being what he felt people wanted him to be, just way too hard on himself. It seems that with rehab or therapy or whatever, they mainly focused on the drug problem and not his depression problems. I've read that a number of times and it's probably true.
