Ooh, 'Movie In Not Like Real Life Shocker' - is basically what he is saying, added with he's thinks the point of the movie was to rescue Richie's career. Get over yourself Kermode!

Rock'n'Rolla is a riot.

He says he hates Ritchie movies, then later goes on to say he went to see movie with an open mind?! Puhlease! A great example of a man trying desperately to sound clever, who also loves the sound of his own voice.

Mark Kermode does make some trenchant comments about the Guy Ritchie oeuvre. I was like him when I first saw lock stock. Personally I believe mockney gangster films are even worse affectations and exaggerations than watching films about upper middle class types endlessly navel gazing. However, when I did see it, I liked the characters and the film does have a sense of humour, same goes for snatch. Cannot agree about Holmes either, I thought the movie was an interesting addition to the canon.

The good thing about Mark Kermode is that, despite the vehmance with which he does denounce certain things, he is always prepared to revise his opinion if need be, and also take's into account movies he wouldn't necessarily choose himself and judge's them on their own merits. Of course you have to make allowances....he is after all only a critic and as such is given to the whim of the moment and the odd tantrum. (;

@gerg1208 I was not entertained. I was bored shitless, because what entertains me is interesting characters, a well conceived plot and skillful direction. Rocknrolla had none of those. I wanted to slap the "rocknrolla" dude numerous times, and actually felt slightly repulsed when he basically violently murdered a bouncer for no apparent reason. Was this an attempt at black humour, or was it just... dumb?

For example, he gave Twilight a positive review and hated Inglourious Basterds. That's about as ridiculous as preferring Gigli over The Godfather. It's not disagreement, it's utter shock and doesn't allow me to take him seriously anymore. I still find him funny though.

And even though i do love him, he does slate a lot of films which some deserve and some dont. (I agree with the Rock n Rolla comments) But apparently 'there's no such thing as a good idea' so it must be hard to please Kermode lol

I think Ritchie made one good movie and lucky for him it was his most successful: Sherlock Holmes.

Maybe it'd because all of those were sort of learning experiences for Ritchie as he didn't know how to make movies before.

To all those who say Kermode just has prejudices towards films, it's worth pointing out that Guy Richie's latest film 'Sherlock Holmes' has been out a few weeks, and Kermode LOVED it. Mark just knows his films; he knows the difference between a crap film, and a good film. It's a shame the rest of us don't.

No bias against Richie whatsoever even though Swept Away and Revolver should've been enough to deter me from any Guy Ritchie film for the rest of my life. Luckily Sherlock Holmes was good.

I didn't think the movie was bad. Certainly not "GOOD" with caplital letters, but serviceable is you're in the right frame of mind.

Kermode's critizisms tend to be exagerated and if you're going to take his advice on movies you have to take prejudices into account and I think two of them are Guy Richy and "Geezer" films.

FWIW I like Lock Stock and Snatch but I hated Rocknrolla. And I saw the film before I even got into Kermode's reviews in the first place.
