This is such a shameless hatchet-job by a shameless fifties-throwback.
Ooh, 'Movie In Not Like Real Life Shocker' - is basically what he is saying, added with he's thinks the point of the movie was to rescue Richie's career. Get over yourself Kermode!
Rock'n'Rolla is a riot.
He says he hates Ritchie movies, then later goes on to say he went to see movie with an open mind?! Puhlease! A great example of a man trying desperately to sound clever, who also loves the sound of his own voice.
One of the funniest aspects of these reviews is that his anger and venom directed at the films makes me want to see them to confirm that they can actually be that bad!
What I really love above everything else in a Kermodian rant is the moment when he throws in breathlessly-"And the WORST thing about it is..." genius.
Mark Kermode does make some trenchant comments about the Guy Ritchie oeuvre. I was like him when I first saw lock stock. Personally I believe mockney gangster films are even worse affectations and exaggerations than watching films about upper middle class types endlessly navel gazing. However, when I did see it, I liked the characters and the film does have a sense of humour, same goes for snatch. Cannot agree about Holmes either, I thought the movie was an interesting addition to the canon.
@BelatedCommiseration He actually went on to praise Sherlock Holmes, eventually calling it Guy Ritchie's best film. I've uploaded that review as well.
@TulseLuper Excellant. Glad to hear he came to his senses in the end. The good thing about Mark Kermode is that, despite the vehmance with which he does denounce certain things, he is always prepared to revise his opinion if need be, and also take's into account movies he wouldn't necessarily choose himself and judge's them on their own merits. Of course you have to make allowances....he is after all only a critic and as such is given to the whim of the moment and the odd tantrum. (;
I kind of agree with Mark here. Although I enjoyed Lock Stock and Snatch (purely as comedies). I was [sligtly] entertained by Rocknrolla, but the way it looks [and this is really a problem with all Guy Ritchie films] put me off. And of course Gerard Butler can't act for shit
For fucks sake...take a chill pill...this dude talks too much...the problem is he has seen all the movies that hes mentioned cos it is his job, but the guess what...the normal man dont have soo much time on thr hands and chances r they might not have seen all the movies that supposedly this movie has ripped off from...hence i was quite entertained by this movie...i was having a bad day, this movie cheered me up...thank u very much, i like it, and dont tell me i dont.

kermode what a knob!! stuttering fuck! rock n roller is a classic, you hate geezer movies cuz you aint 1,ive never heard so much shit come out of someone's mouth, there's no school like the old school and im the fucking headmaster!
@gerg1208 Nobody is arguing that movies aren't about entertainment. But I can think of thousands of films more entertaining than Rocknrolla, and three of them are Guy Ritchie movies: Lock Stock, Snatch and Sherlock Holmes.
@TulseLuper doesn't mean that Rocknrolla is shit? Batman begins was a good film does that mean it's shit because there's many movies better some of them being Nolans films, inception and dark knight? no. I liked Rocknrolla. I thought it was alright not the best but worth buying, i haven't got lock stock but i have seen it which i think is a practice of snatch.
@gerg1208 I was not entertained. I was bored shitless, because what entertains me is interesting characters, a well conceived plot and skillful direction. Rocknrolla had none of those. I wanted to slap the "rocknrolla" dude numerous times, and actually felt slightly repulsed when he basically violently murdered a bouncer for no apparent reason. Was this an attempt at black humour, or was it just... dumb?
@BigBoss7777777 Why are you looking towards critics for validation? So what if that's what he thinks? You should listen to Kermode to hear his opinions and make your own mind up.
@BigBoss7777777 You're losing respect for a critic just because you disagree with him. If that's why you listen to critics then you're never going to be happy.
@TulseLuper It's not just because I disagree with him, it's the ridiculous extent of his opinion on certain movies that make me lose respect for him. For example, he gave Twilight a positive review and hated Inglourious Basterds. That's about as ridiculous as preferring Gigli over The Godfather. It's not disagreement, it's utter shock and doesn't allow me to take him seriously anymore. I still find him funny though.
@BigBoss7777777 Well, he judges movies based on their own individual standards. And hey, I hate Twilight as much as anyone else, but I couldn't care less if he likes it. If anything, his opinion goes against the grain so much that I appreciate the opposing POV. But to each his own.
HA ha ha - I love Kermode. Just read his book 'Its only a movie' Really good.
And even though i do love him, he does slate a lot of films which some deserve and some dont. (I agree with the Rock n Rolla comments) But apparently 'there's no such thing as a good idea' so it must be hard to please Kermode lol
i agree . the film was awful.. pointless film making... guy ritchie is not a good or even a ordinary film maker .. his a sorry excuse for a film maker .. avoid his film at all costs.. i watched rock n rolla and it was rubbish .. absolute rubbish
Rocknrolla was unbearably dull. I watched it with a few friends and I've never been so bored in my life... Okay well maybe that's not true but it was pretty boring.
@PRAGMATICIST I agree completely. Revolver wasn't bad. It was mind numbingly awful. There are worse movies, the Swedish Göta Kanal 2 comes to mind, but we are talking the very bottom of the barrel.
He likes loads of films. If you bothered to watch/listen to all his available reviews, you'd be aware of that fact. As for Watchmen, his reasons made perfect sense. All style and no substance, which is something loads of people have said.
@crusadah actually, like tulseluper says, he likes loads of films, and even on the subject of guy ritchie, he quite liked sherlock homes. to be fair, i disagree with him on a few things, but i can't argue with this. rocknrolla was a truly terrible film
To all those who say Kermode just has prejudices towards films, it's worth pointing out that Guy Richie's latest film 'Sherlock Holmes' has been out a few weeks, and Kermode LOVED it. Mark just knows his films; he knows the difference between a crap film, and a good film. It's a shame the rest of us don't.
Yeah and as someone who likes Lock Stock and Snatch, I thought Rocknrolla was terrible even though I went in expecting to be entertained. No bias against Richie whatsoever even though Swept Away and Revolver should've been enough to deter me from any Guy Ritchie film for the rest of my life. Luckily Sherlock Holmes was good.
I didn't think the movie was bad. Certainly not "GOOD" with caplital letters, but serviceable is you're in the right frame of mind.
Kermode's critizisms tend to be exagerated and if you're going to take his advice on movies you have to take prejudices into account and I think two of them are Guy Richy and "Geezer" films.
True but I do think he goes into films with an open mind. After all, he liked Sherlock Holmes and he has even started to warm up to Keira Knightley recently after really slagging her off.
FWIW I like Lock Stock and Snatch but I hated Rocknrolla. And I saw the film before I even got into Kermode's reviews in the first place.
