  • you can fix the rattling by hot glueing where the blade meets the handle

  • @pelefan245 - Try to use a weatherproof epoxy if you can by taping around the handle to keep it from running but leave a little gap to squeeze the epoxy in. Or wet a leather lace and squeeze it between the blade and the handle. When it dries it will get a little hard and take up the slack. Hope that helps let me know how it works for you. - TMO

  • it all depends on the user, give a bamboo knife to an efficient survivalist he will make it no matter what.

  • @yocam420 - I agree, one needs to develop the frame of mind that one can look at the things around you to use for ones survival thus as I always say identify, adapt and overcome.- TMO

  • @ModernOutdoorsman Thank you sir, your videos could save lives.

  • Got a finnish sami knife 7" wields so nicely recommended allround knife! Bk2 heavy to wield but perfoms very well! My next blade will be the esee junglas i think the overall feel will be more like the bk2 weight in momentum but more efficient as a chopper due to the thinner full flat grind and length of the blade. I imagine that its plausible to divide the blade into a sharp region and a less sharp region for heavy and presicion work. Although i think it will not compare to the usefullness of

  • What about the U.S.A made Kabar knives??? Our troops used them in WW2 for almost everything, from killing enemies to opening can of food!

  • @MrKabarUser- love'em I have one from WWII, still doing the work most won't, the other is from the TDI series. This video had a list of brand names I thought were good and kabar was one but, the video was too long and I had to cut it. The intent of the video is to help those that have no experience with knives and prevent them from getting gouged by some guy selling an overly expensive knife, with the sells pitch that it can do everything as long as they give up their pay check for it.- TMO

  • what do you think abaout to hawe a wenger swiss army knife hwo the swiss army used from 1961-2008 as a surviver knife?

  • @sond009 Swiss Army knives are great! The quality is always good and I have yet to find one that was not of a good quality. As a matter of fact I gave each of my Daughters one on their 15th birthdays. Remeber, the best survival knife is the one that you have with you when you need it. - TMO

  • I like your video, bare bones, no BS. And the knives I make, I make to abuse by batoning, because it's super useful technique to learn, but also to use regularly, while keeping a super sharp edge.

Am gonna look at more vids and subscribe, thanks for posting!

Mike @ STKR Knives on Facebook

  • @STRKnives I would like to see some of your handy work, I tried knife making one time, did not work out to well. Please send me some pictures of your knives.

  • @ModernOutdoorsman

Hi, thanks for your interest. I'm a small time maker (full time instrumentation tech on research aircraft for the Canadian government), been at knife making for a year and a half, sold almost a few dozen so far, quite the the feedback from them so far (hard to dull is common), am quite proud of my 'getting it right' early on. If you search STKR Knives you'll be able to see my facebook page, and also there is a good review of my Scout knife on civilian sheep dog dot com

  • @STRKnives I like your scout neck knife nice work. Please send me an email, I would like to talk with you more on how I can order one, sorry I am not on facebook.

  • @ModernOutdoorsman

Thanks so much, the design I came up with for the basic blank has produced many useful variations, as you saw, tactical cord wrapped handle (two either have or are currently in Afghanistan with Canadian Army soldiers that got one, the one with the curly maple handle (most recent one) is in the UK right now with the proud new owner (he LOVES it, to the point of setting up an order for a tanto style knife with Kydex sheath). I'll post my email to you via message if I can.

  • "Tanto blade"? "Serrations"? lolol! Knifetestdotcom are clowns in strange masks who beat cinder blocks.

If and serious readers find this video, look into some BK&T knives; made in the USA and are great value for the money.

And fyi, it's not called a "Gurkha" knife, it's called a Kukri!

  • Another good point I saw on a video somewhere on Youtube was a survival knife is the one you have with you when you need it.

  • @1LRLRG - This is true, I always carry a EPP with me all the time.

  • I had a tanto knife frome the dollar store never broke the tip i broke the tip off my buck 55 in less than 10 days

  • It is good to hear a pratical definition.

  • Now that's a real knife review.

  • When you are talking about a survival/camp knife for medium batoning work, what would be a good, under $60, knife?

  • @macstmanj3 - I like my onterio 12" machette for $25.00 - go to knife test dot com and watch thier reviews, they really do a good job. - TMO

  • I am not familiar with that knife but, if it is as well built as my knives of Alaska "muskrat" then it is a good quality knife. Remember, a knife must fit your needs not others. :-)

  • i have a question are knives of alaska xtreme survival knife a good knife with 60-62 rc hardness 6in blade handle can open to store stuff in handle i think it will be very effective even tho they have bigger knives i think that one will be good please check it out and tell me

  • sir, a next tutorial can be a closer camera please??

saludos desde chile, muy buen video!!!

  • Heck Yeah! The $9 cheaper than dirt knife is great.. The add says, a knife that will take a beating. They offer 2 versions. When it arrived, it looks and feels great. Another asset to throw in the bugout bag. Good vids with practical substance.. Keep em coming.

  • Damn Cicadas in the background.

  • great video! it would help if you touched upon sheath materials. i like leather sheaths so in a pinch i can touch up the edge by stropping on the side. i like how you also brought up a relevant point i cant stress enough to others, never carry just one knife!

  • YOU FOUND MY SWISS ARMY KNIFE THANK YOU!

  • I like it!!

  • i bring power tools when i go camping lol j.k

  • Great knife brand: Marttiini. The best knife survival knife model in the world is a finnish sami knife (finnish name: Lapinleuku) take a look from wikipedia.=)

  • @norkoilija - Thanks for the heads up, I will check it out.

  • I gotta tell ya, I respect you for putting up a video where you actually say something good about a cheap knife. Thats a good way to get attacked and insulted here on youtube. Im glad you showed it, I have always wondered how them 3 different style cheap knives from cheaper than dirt performed. Another cheap china made knife thats pretty tough is an M-Tech. Im just like you in a sense that I like a big blade. Good video man, thanks for posting.

  • @Reallybigmonkey1 my mtech is bad ass infact Im so proud of it I made a video cause Im sick of mtech getting a bad rep, I know they make junk but they also make a few knifes that are better then the co$tly knifes, like the 1 have, so Im on a mission to spread the word!

  • the tom a hawk looks like the sog's where can u order that one at

  • @curtispa - Sorry but my tomahawk is one that I had cut down from a 1940's camp hatchet because it made a well balanced, small, light weight hawk that was of good metal. So you won’t find it on the market for sale but, I do have a “Cold Steel” rifleman’s hawk and it is great.

  • Great video! I laughed out loud around 8:30 loud hawk being chased by a crow.

  • Crucible Steel in syracuse is still at it..

  • Some of the world's best knives are from New York State: Camillus, Ontario, Cutco, Ka-Bar, Schrade, etc.

  • im suprised you didnt mention camillus in good knife brands at the end

  • @2488terror - Your right I should have, I have one and they are good knives.

  • Great video, I bought a survival machete 6 years ago for £25 it sharpened up real nice I have put it through punishment since I got it and its still going strong.

  • I like kershaws

  • so romantic! i would never expect a knife for an anaversory.

i think thas how you spell it

  • @pants554 - Yes! It is very romantic when your wife takes the time to listen to what you want and give you something you will use on a daily basis, which reminds you of your love and commitment, you bet!, much better than something you place on a shelve and use every now and again.

  • @ModernOutdoorsman You nailed it right on the head there :)

  • @ModernOutdoorsman There is only one good survival Knife. It's the one you have with you at the time of the emergency.

  • @BIGMUDDYDOG - AMEN!! - TMO

  • Is the 22inch Ontario machete useful? Or do you guys find it to be too long? I was thinking of getting one with the d handle like his.

  • @ScalyOJ I do have the 22 inch as well and use it all the time but when it comes to tracking through the woods, hiking or just trying to compact my gear, in my "opinion" nothing beats the weight, size and usefulness of the 12 inch Onterio machete with the hand gaurd. – TMO

  • Great video, much enjoyed. My fav. is a 10 inch Bowie. A great all rounder. Many thanks.

  • i only buy american...

  • I like your videos! Informative and very thorough! good job! subscribing!

  • How can I find that $10 China knife?

  • @FreelanceComic Cheaper than dirt dot com, it's called a rough use knife and they have three models to choose from.

  • i put my ontario machette thru hell man its a work horse

  • The Ghurker regiment isn't in Nepal, it is a UK regiment of Nepalese men, specially selected and trained warriors

  • @SouthernCross33 - The men and knives are from Nepal the unit is British. However, if you research the history the first units were developed under the East Indian Training Company in India bringing the men from Nepal which was under British control at the time. I do believe they are based out of Britain solely now since Britain no longer controls India. The information that I base my comment from is that they are originally from Nepal.

  • @ModernOutdoorsman Yeah Kukri pre-date the military use, they're the everyday utility blade in Nepal. Used for everything from chopping wood to prepping food. Come in a wide variety of sizes apart from the military models which are usually around 11-12".

  • @ModernOutdoorsman

Did you ever checked out the Gerber Multi-Tools, i've heard that they even may outperform some Leathermans :)

And regarding "Made in China" knifes, they aren't always shitty, just as another example therefor is the "Spyderco Tenacious" simply a bang for the buck, although made in China.

Btw. another knife you may want to check out, "Glock 81", made out of spring steel and pretty though for the money you spend on it :)

Just have to be resharpen a bit, and you`r ready to go!

  • @peterthemonkey - Our video on multi-tools demonstrates that I own a Gerber multi-tool. China knives are getting better and I know that Spyder-co and Cold-steel are made there but, there are many cheapos coming out of China, my point was to show you what to look for in a sturdy knife. In other words if your looking for a good knife, just because it is a $400 dollar knife does not mean it is the best. You have to be comfortable that your knife will take a beating and not fail when needed most.

  • @ModernOutdoorsman

Yea i've just watched the Multi-tool Video :)

And yep absolutely correct it would be kinda hard to take a 400$ Knife into the woods and may destroying it :)

I really like the Ontario12 Inch Machete, and i've looking for one, sadly since then i've was only able to find the 18" Version which is too large for my purpose.

Especially the D-Handle is a feature, that i really like :)

Well then, have a nice day! :)

  • @peterthemonkey - Hey try this site for the onterio - wwwknifecentercom

  • Great vid, informative!

  • I carry a Ontario 18 inch Machete

  • @T4EVER1000 - Crooked wood fire starters makes the only tactical sheath for it that I know of, very nice. His contact info is on our website at our website in the resource section, great tool I don't leave home without it.

  • @ModernOutdoorsman Thanks man.

  • Thanks for the great video about survival knifes! Really put it in perspective.

  • Great video...thank you for sharing
