cont'd verdions too. I know Mary sang it in Japanese and it is the only one recording she sang in Japanese. And i know a Japanese guy saying with him the most best song of Mary's is this one. Thanks for leaving lovely comment. Regards, Tomoya xx.
This is a quality song. It doesn't surprise me that it didn't go down so well with the public, it is very elegant and refined. I know the song from the great Francoise Hardy's attempt to break into the English market, If You Listen. I'm afraid such songs are not obvious enough for immediate impact and are likely to get drowned out. I believe Tony Visconti recognised the quality when he heard Francoise's version and brought it to Mary. Both versions should be better known than they are.
This got panned by the critics in 1971 and I have to say I agreed with them at the time. Not now, what a great song. maturity brings greater appreciation.
@talentrading yes! Ive bought You look Familiar, new Post Card & new Earth Song / Ocean Song altogether in this coupke of months. This dong is included as a bonus track in the new Earth Song / Ocean Song. You Look Familiar is very nice with her and her familys rainbow coloured fantastic songs. All the best, Tomoya
I heard Mary's famous songs when I was young but I didn't know that is her. Her voice sounds like from an angel of Heaven . I heard the "Goodbye" again two weeks' ago and I was amazed with her voice and lovely face(the 1st time that I see). It's a sweet song by a sweet girl.
When I was a kid me and all my buddies thought Mary was the most beautiful woman we ever saw. I am 54 and Mary is still a beauty and her music is as lovely as ever, I still love her voice, she will forever be a star to me.
Mary Hopkin - Let My Name Be Sorrow is one of her recordings made while signed to Apple 68 - 71. It does appear on the collection " Those Were the Days"
I Haven't heard this song for years, i forgot just how great it is, and just what a stunning voice mary has. After hearing it again i cant get it out of my head!!
The Japanese version (at my ch.) and French version (at richpat ch.) are too beautiful. Enjoy them too. Mary sings not with karaoke but sings with real band there!! This means these songs are different from TWTD.
In my country Toshiba-EMI releases 3 Apple Days albums of Mary's as special so called paper sleeved issues in fall 2005. They ARE still today available at certain disc stores nearby (but efforts needed to find them, luckiness and tolerance of my feet ;D". Maybe re-release will be made shortly.
Well I have thought that Toshiba-EMI always re-releases Mary's 3 Apple days' albums nearly when almost all stores have no stocks of them. At neighbor town I met 2 of them in this April. The latest re-releases were in 2005 (paper-sleeved special) and in 2007 (limited ed. album Those Were The Days), I know.
She is Mary Hopkin, my everlasting sweetheart. Her "Those Were The Days" / Turn! Turn! Turn (B-side) is my first purchased 45 r.p.m. record, that was really world-wide No.1 hit then (in 1968, arranged and produced by Paul MacCartney as one of 4 releases from the Apple Ltd. estimated by the Beatles.
She is Welsh and grown in welsh-speaking family. She is so talented artist then I have never met any lovely lady until now.
Visit Mary's own level shown in my information collum or at Ms. richpat's replying.
First time I met her trademark MHM emblem, "MHM" lady, I have understood MARY WEARS KIMONO, Japanese traditional formal dress!
I really have seen the MHM-emblem like Japanese papercraft work, origami, at a craftart shop in Japan, in my country, though I even now I have no idear where can I buy the origami work in Tokyo.
Ive never seen anyone so beautiful. In this anything goes, if it feels good do it, low class culture damned world, she is a light more brilliant than the sun to show forth the Son. Amen.
Here in Japan, Apple and its agent (then Toshiba) released in English and in Japanese versions. So, "Let my name be sorrow in Japanese is the only one song Mary sang in Japanese! It's too very beautiful.
Mary was born in Pontardawe, Wales to a Welsh-speaking family. She released an EP of Welsh language songs for a local record label called Cambrian who were based in her home town, before signing to the Beatles' Apple Records. The model Twiggy saw her winning the British ITV television talent show Opportunity Knocks and recommended her to Paul McCartney.[1] She became one of the first artists to record on the Beatles' Apple record label.
Thank you very much for your correct and good informations.
"Mary was born and grown in a Welsh-speaking family" IS maybe very important, since English for her was a secod (foreign) language. This makes her singing in English very beautiful and very easy to listening to for me and people who are not native English speakers, I think.
Thankyou for posting.Although the song shows what Mary can do with her voice it was more a "b"side than an "a"side.Speaking of b sides in Britain the b side to this song was Kew Gardens. That song introduced me to the rest of Ralph McTells songwriting and records. Its cost me a fortune!
I am a fan since the "Those were the days" was released (in 1968). I attended her valued live at Osaka Expo in 1970. This song was released about one year later after the live at Osaka. Two versions were released in Japan, one is in Japanese and the other in English.
This is the only one song Mary sang in Japanese, so I thought that it was my duty, as a sincere fan for Mary, to post this song in both languages.
But when this was released in June of 1971 Mary was still on top and had never yet had a flop and in the British music papers reviews of new singles this was considered a hit for example in Record Mirror. This was released the same week as the headlines stated that Mary Hopkin was going to change style and pure image from cabaret to folk, but as the reporter wrote, "not on record".
In Japan the agent Toshiba (now Toshiba-EMI) strongly recommended and did arrangement with Mary directly to release her "Que sera, sera" (when the Expo Tour)...I hear.
I have only found "the top #20 weekly list" for that days from the website now. Detailed charts are supplied as written materials, then I need further library work, I shall do it however.
From available information on the web, Mary's next single "Good bye/Sparrow" was released on 1/4/1969 and entered the top #20 chart 26/5/69 and kept within top #20 for 7 weeks. The highest position was #13.
For Mary's "Those were the days". Only limited information available from the website. I need maybe a library work but I will :D Single "Those were the days/Turn!Turn!Turn!" released on 05/12/68. 16/12/68 #18 23/12/68 #6 30/12/68 #2 06/01/69 #3 13/01/69 #2 20/01/69 #2 27/01/69 #1 and next 9 wks keep whithin #20. Hey Jude was released ealier on 10/09/68, the highest position was #5. There was large language gap at that time. Almost all songs other than these two hits are Japanese POPs.
Thanks for posting this alternative version again. Can you tell me some information about this slow version? Both two versions are excellent. Thanks again.
I am not familiar to the mixture software then the whole period is 120%-rate slowly played in that slow version. I listened to the slow version so repeatedly that made me that was correct, since Mary's voice was just sweet enough and of her own in that slow version...
