The "could care less" thing annoys the fucking shit out of me. However, I'm sorry, but you're incorrect about the "holding down the fort" part. I'm sure you understand, when someone says "holding down the fort," it's not meant to be taken LITERALLY. They're not literally "holding down the fort" just like they're not literally "holding the fort." Those expressions are both metaphors, therefore "holding DOWN the fort" is perfectly fine to say.
