  • My son is 6 and has autism, he also echoes, it's so embarrassing sometimes, he likes to do it if he hears a foreign accent. Your boy is beautiful.

  • @Nicolap14 that's pretty common, I used to get embarresed too lol, he doesnt do this any more....

  • Wow, you must get REALLY sick of people saying "does he really have autism?" or "he doesn't look autistic". He's gorgeous xxx

  • @Jen3910 ya lol, even more so now that he is very high functioning and 7 years old. if you get to know him you would start to notice IF you know what to look for. He is aware that his stims ae embarresing so he has asked for help to hide them infront of people and friends BUT he does them so much! they are not that obvious but after a while.....lol I love my boy, hes been through a lot these years and hes still going strong...

  • "Alright, thanks you" "alright thank you...pickles" that was cute....but the good thing about repeating is maybe he will be one of the politer children, and if he talks to other people he will say please & thank you!

  • thx for posting this, how's he doing now? my neice is diagnosed with PDD and has similar symptoms as your son.

  • @MsKsendza He is doing great! he is in regular Ed., has friends and play dates, has become mostly independent in some self help skills, still struggles with some social concepts but that will be on going as he gets older and will have to to learn the "new" social rules.......thx for asking!

  • This is a crucial age to start developing Santiago's thinking and feelings. I wish you all the best.

  • The problem is: If a dad says what he does, and the dad believes he has autism, he gets diagnosed with Autism, because he can't really say anything against it. I was diagnosed with Autism because my shitty dad believed I had autism. 2 years later I was able to test for autism again, and they diagnosed me with completely nothing and they couldnt even see 1 autistic thing. I know my sister learned to speak by just saying what everybody else says. Isn't this what you believe he has and not reality?

  • @YourComputerExpert He was not diagnosed based off of his echolalia. We were in denial the first 6 months when he was labled "at risk" at 2 1/2 years, he recieved his first diagnosis at 3 1/2 years and a final diagnosis at 5 1/2 years.

I do agree that just because a child echos it does not mean they are autisitic. Typical children echo words to learn.

  • my nephew does this and it's funny because he will repeat the things his mom says, things that she doesn't want repeated LOL

  • i miss them so much i wish i could c them i miss u and love people kk

  • heyy i know he has that

  • don't be too qjuick to label this kid. I had a daughter who learned to speak through ecolalia and now she is 10 and speaking on her own completely. Your son doesn't seem to have any other signs that I can see like strange gaze, flapping etc. He seems to be fully engaged also. Consider the possibility that he may have a different way of learnjng communication just as my daughter did.

  • @KSitz77 Thank you for your opinion BUT my son does have Autism and this is just a short clip of his echolalia. He has many autism characteristics you can not see in this 20second clip. This video is just to show what echolalia looks like in an Autistic child, even though it can look different in every child THIS is just one example.

  • @cricket1r OK sorry. I just think the label "Autism" is put so quickly on kids these days. My daughter is a perfect example. I kept telling professionals that my daughter was not autistic and they just thought I was in denial. But, I am her mom I just KNEW. Now they admit they were mistaken.

  • @KSitz77 Also, you are the mom. You know better about your son than any of the professionals do. If you say he is Autistic, then he is.

  • @cricket1r My 3 year old grandson is on the severly range and he does the same thing. He doesnt use words in the correct content but he repeats some things and remembers phrases. His phrase for yes is "there ya go"

  • When you said his name, he did look over as if preoccupied. If you would have got his attention would he have responded?

  • @Learningbyhearing he was responding to his baby brother crying in the other seat. I dont think he would have responded to me, back then it was part of his routine to do this at drive thrus .

  • @cricket1r I took another look at the video, I seen the part you are talking about. It did kinda look like I threw him off when I talked to him, like he was going to look my way but stopped and shiffted his eyes back to Dad quickly as he was waiting on Dad to see what els he might say that he could echo. hard to say though.....

  • @KSitz77 he has autism i kno because im his auncle

  • Watching this video felt completely comfortable (because this is what it is like if we go through a drive thru!) and broke my heart at the same time, because my son does the same thing...his therapists have tried many ways to stop it, but it just persists.

  • what is echolalia

  • yeah he was at all regulary chek up at doctor and all vakcines but, thanks god he never geat sick flue so we wore on ly at regulry chek up s and now at yune he turn 3 year and we domand 4 kindergarden we will see what doctor says!i hope its all ok! i spoke whit some pedriaritians and teachers in the kinder garden they tell me its all ok they now some children no one word in 4 years than suddenli like an big pearson!they all ceap tealling me GVE HIM TIME!!!tnx 4 advices and again apol.4 my eangli

  • what u thing my son have autism or maybe was wrong at age 1 he wach tv in eanglish and start talk eanglish a then at age 2 we turn in our leanguage but dont want always tal he pointing finger if u ask who is that what is this ecc,if u ask him whats his name no answer can anye of u healp me im little worry didnt slept 4 days,

  • Well all Autistic children are so different from eachother but they can have some simular characteristics but if you are worried you should have your child evaluated by a Developmental Pediatrician or Child Psychologist. Some children learing 2 languages take longer to speak and that is normal but please get your child evaluated, early intervention is the best!

  • first im apologise 4 my eamglish not so good!when i watcede all this videos,im little wory!my son is 32 months old,he dont put toys in line, and know they purpose if is a car he psh an make eangine sound, plane olso know what he can!!he talk few things lioke dady i want a donat, dady lets go out and 10 maybe things.but im wory be coas he dont woant listen to me if he touch staf he souldent go in the refrigirator open shugar box ant puth all over the flor or coofie same thing, toalet paper srotolate

  • Yes he has autism.............he was diagnosed at 3 1/2 yrs of age.

  • Hi, i work with a young boy age 12 who has tourettes/autism/adhd, he never spoke a word up until he was 12 and professionals never thought he would, he understands most of what is said to him, and now will give a variety of answers and will prompt for conversation. Now because of his tourettes/autism he has have you repeat the words, until it is said perfect other wise we have challenging behaviour, but there can be breakthroughs and theres plenty of time :)

  • Your son has such a cute little voice. I recall my son, Cameron, not saying his first word until he was about 2yrs3mos and then only began saying others at about 2 1/2, which is when we realised he was autistic, Reading up on autism I remember thinking how I wished Cameron would echo words because then at least I could hear what his voice sounds like, He is now 3yrs3mos and although still has serious speech delays he is making nice progress.

  • We always got a lot of comments on how cute his voice is, and thank you........we are very greatful that he echoed and had some words (and now speaks full scentences) I could not imagine how it would be for him to be non-verbal........my friends son with autism is non-verbal (he regressed in words and now has none) and I know she longs to hear him speak again :(

  • Yes we used it. You have to know when to use it so that your child doesn't go around saying "I don't know" for every answer. You need to be able to know when your child really looks puzzled and doesnt know. You usally introdce the "I dont know" when your child has mastered the "make a choice" questions and stopes echoing thoses,so when he does echo on a make a choice you know he dosen't understand so you can then promt him/her to say it "I don't know" I hope I explained that well enough....

  • What do you think of the 'I don't know' approach?

Which is to encourage a child with Echolalia to say 'I don't know' instead of echoing the sentence he/she doesn't understand?

I'm not for/against this approach I'm just curious to find out if anyone has tried this.

I've heard it's been used in conjunction with Applied Behaviour Analysis.

So one Prompts a more socially 'appropriate' response.

  • sometimes they might just mirror you because they like to copy you and imitate you for fun. They look up to you right? savvy? Does it necessarily mean autism?

  • yes,all children echo as a form of learning but in the case of autism the children over use echoing and do not understand what they are echoing. They have no spontanoius speech of their own to let you know they are hungry, thirsty ect.Our son at that age was only using 1 word to communicate "chip" "cup" ect... but able to to use 3 word combonations or more when echoing.Another was you could ask, do you want candy or rotten eggs and he would always echo the last choice,he didn't understand.

  • OMG, my son does this. Not to this extreme. Its only with special words. If I say "MADONNA MIA" (we're Italian), he echo's it, same with paparazzi....big words. He was actually doing it in the supermarket today, so much I heard a lady laughing at us (not mockingly...just chuckling cuz we were cute) This video is a PERFECT example of echolalia. Anyone watching, take notes. THIS IS IT!

  • and is he autistic? mine does it a little bit too and he is almost 3, but he lets me know ehrn he wants something. He des not sya "yes" only "no"
