actually switchfoot do say they are a christian band and publicly say so not to mention they consistently play at creations fest which is the biggest christian music tour out there
ok please everyone can we all agree that this song is awsome and not have to analyze the fact of wether or not it's a christian song or a christian band, and we also don't need to express our hapiness that this is a song that some of our religions approve of....can we just comment about the song(not religion) please, even though i'm being hypocritical by talking abouth christianity in this comment!(-:

Do you need to analize and break down every detail about these things? Sales, perspectives, what places bands do their gigs at - who cares?
Love reading everyones comments.... Christians aren't humanistic? When was the last time "piratemvp" listened to a Christian Band? "Its hard to reach others thru narrow roads!" We hear IT in many genres of music. You also forgot the "committed Christian part, about Jon Foreman on Wiki.... interesting. Switchfoot reaches all!

Typical Switchfoot. Deep words with mediocre tunes. I used to be so crazy about these guys back when they released Beautiful Letdown. But, then I saw that it is the best they could do. Since they cannot evolve, their popularity has dropped as a result. Mention Switchfoot to anyone, and they think Meant to Live. Not Stars, not We are One Tonight, not Oh!Gravity, just that song they wrote 6 years ago. That's sad.
Beside the fact that you're horribly over-generalizing, you're just wrong..."People" think of Meant to Live who don't listen to Switchfoot probably. Every band has their singles that their non-fans will know them for. Anyone who listens to more than Stars, One Tonight and Gravity will know that they have better songs. You're just ignorant. And if you were crazy about them at their lowest low, Beautiful Letdown, I'm not sure you know them well either.
I think I know them quite well. I have purchased every album from the beginning up to Oh! Gravity. I also subscribed to their newsletters. And, I will not be purchasing their newest one. Beautiful Letdown was their best one by far, and the sales figures support that. I was all excited when Nothing is Sound came out, and I was terribly disappointed. I decided to give them another chance with Oh! Gravity, but after getting disappointed a second time, I decided to give up on Switchfoot.
really? i thought nothing is sound was great! although oh! gravity was disappointing these new songs are great! just because something is different doesn't mean it isn't as good or better.
That's just the point. This song is not different. It is the typical thing they've been putting out there for years. Of course you'll always have people who like a band, but my comment was focused on mainstream reception of them, and that has diminished greatly ever since Beautiful Letdown. I've become bored of their style of music, but that's just my opinion. The only good song on their last album was the title track, so who knows how many good songs I'll like on this new one.
Another thing; the reason I was disappointed with Nothing is Sound is not because it was a bad album (it was quite the contrary) but because it wasn't as good as Beautiful Letdown and it didn't live up to the hype that it received from most people.
well i respect ur opinion.....but i think that Switchfoot is just changing their sound and makin music that enjoy themselves and musically being what they want to be and not what a record label wants of them or anyone else for that matter...that being sed i think this song really ROCKS!!! :) big Switchfoot fan btw
They have evolved no question about that. But, they have become the band that only "thinking people" would be interested in. And, the reason why I say this is typical Switchfoot is because when you listen to it, you just know it's from them. Not necessarily the same sound or tune, but you just know it's surfing boys from San Diego.
Because an album sells a lot of copies (and i'd like to see those sales figures you were refering to) doesn't mean it's necessarily good. Don't get me wrong, I love everything these boys have put out since day one, but saying BL is their best because it sold a lot of copies....makes no sense. BL was a low because it was their first album with a huge record label, which came out in their sound. it's bland and average.
Beautiful Letdown was not a low. It was their first big hit into the mainstream market, and it's a historic album for them. You may think that their music is better now, but the fact is that when it comes down to it, sales is all that matters. The better your album, the more sales you will get. And, BL sold overa million copies I believe, which no other album of theirs has even come close to matching.
That's actually the OPPOSITE of the way it usually works.
As a fan of less-than-radio-friendly rock, I find that the worse an album is, the more copies it sales (IE - Comatose (Skillet) VS Collide (Skillet). Comatose sold way more, but Collide was a much better album)
Well, you're citing Skillet, and that's a bad example. The Christian music industry runs totally different from the mainstream industry, as al Christian music fans would well know. Fact is that Switchfoot is not Christian, so we must look at them from a mainstream perspective. And, in the mainstream market, better albums make better sales for the most part.
No, if anyone's retarded, it's you. Here's from Jon Foreman's own mouth: "For us, it's a faith, not a genre. We've always been very open and honest about where the songs are coming from. For us, these songs are for everyone. Calling us 'Christian rock' tends to be a box that closes some people out and excludes them. And that's not what we're trying to do. Music has always opened my mind—and that's what we want".
Have you heard Jon Foreman's singles? They are VERY Christian. No, Switchfoot may not label their songs as Christian(even though they still play at Christian festivals, and gatherings) their morals and inspirations(lyrics) are Christian.
No...albums with more radio friendly songs make better album sales. Radio Friendly =/= good, neccesarily. It can, but it is not always true. In fact, it's usually the opposite. You want a mainstream example? Linkin Park. Minutes to Midnight is one of the best selling albums in any recent music history, and LPs best selling record.
I hated Minutes to Midnight. Hybrid Theory and Meteora are FAR better, in my opinion.
Christian and Mainstream are no different to me...if it sounds good, I...
I just tend to find that albums with less "popularity" among the masses tend to be better, because, as a whole, I have vastly different tastes than most people.
Well, as long as you appreciate the music, that's what counts for you. I'm just talking about it general and from a business standpoint. And, I'm the same as you. I listen to Christian music and some secular stuff if it's good. As long as it isn't against God it's fine with me.
You don't think they are Christian? Ok, look at Jon Foreman's singles. Their single "This Is Home," on a Christian based film. They go to Christian festivals to play time to time. Jon doesn't put Switchfoot's music as Christian, but their morals and inspirations are Christian.
That's debatable. Take a look at This is Your Life, or especially, We were Meant to Live. Those songs (and there's others I can't think off the top of my head right now) seemed rather humanistic. And, if they are not, they were at least written so that a Christian could get something out of it and a non-christian could too. That's not real Christian music. They're just writing songs to appease everyone, and so they are right not to call themselves Christian.
That's partially true, but people will not buy a bad product no matter how well it's advertised. Apple has one of the best advertising campaigns of any company. And, they still own a miniscule section of the computer market.
A funny fact though is that for this new album switchfoot worked with Mike Elizondo who is a producer for mainly hip-hop and has worked with dr dre and eminem.
Shoot, the sound quality is amazing! Awesome! I'm already in love with this song and 'Bullet Soul.' I think I'll refrain from listening to any other songs before they're released though, I can't wait for the album! Or looking at a sooner time, the first single!!!

But as someone who has listened to all of thier albums quite a bit I have to say that Switchfoot has evolved a lot as a band.
While Beautiful Letdown is thier most accesable work thus far thier new stuff is more complex - musically and lyrically.
Also - of thier albums have a unique feel to them Meant to Live, Stars, and Oh! Gravity are very different songs.
And personally I don't see how this new song is 'typical switchfoot'. and I've heard the album version too.
