  • great song

  • So, is this song about Heroin?

  • @threeblades its about obsessive love. which can be an addiction. but no, the song is about going to any lengths to get what one wants from another.

  • so good, many thanks.

country gravy on a spring morn mmmm......

  • this is one of my favorite patton tunes..love the slide work on this...thanks for posting :)

  • I love this... it's okay by me!! and Happy Charlie Day~

  • If this is about drugs and going to jail, that really upsets me. Drugs should not be illegal... A lot of other things that should be, are not...crazy world this is

  • Happy birthday Charley (5-1-1891/ 4-28-1934) !!

  • Thank you, Thierry~ This is wonderful!!!

  • excellent Delta Bluesman, thanks!!

  • How'd he die?

  • 0:39.That's Robert Crumb's illustration.

  • Freakin' brutal playing and singing, amazing stuff.

  • I believe this song must be older than anything Willie Dixon did. So the influence may have been reversed.

  • right. there was a tradition of 'borrowing' among the delta bluesmen, so it's really hard to be sure to be sure who was the creator of a traditional blues song. the mississippi delta country blues was created by men who had no schooling, so most were illiterate. they didn't write, literally, anything. they created, brilliantly. this is an indictment of the racism faced by African Americans working the cotton fields in the Delta from 1866-? Mr. Dixon was a child when this song was first played.

  • I think Patton is incredible...he had made a unique style of blues, out of all the categories...in my opinion is the strangest one, including probably skip james...

  • this song is about blow

  • I still think the chord progression is really neat.

  • Some of his songs and stories recounted by his "disciples", friends, and relatives were apparently about times he spent on a reservation with his Indian relatives.

  • Rest in peace Papa Charlie. You were the best.

  • what race was he (not that it matters) i cant tell from the pictures

  • he was mixed black-white or black-native american. many people who knew him described him as very very light skinned.

  • They say he was a mix of afroamerican and native indian from the oklahoma territories since there is evidence that, his grand mother was a full blooded cherokee. Whatever the case there is no doubt that his race won't make a difference to understand that he was and he will remain forever the one and only founder of this great and true music straight from the soul of them good old bluesmen across the southern states. peace to the masked marvel..

  • Heeey333 you don't know jack shit if you think rappers have as much talent as anybody who plays the blues much less people like howlin wolf or muddy water.

  • The chord progression in this song is really neat.

  • awesome. thanx! Been a long time since Ive heard this one.

  • This is also my favourite Patton song...thumping away and getting faster towards the end..notice how both this one and the Howlin' Wolf Spoonful the title word is actually sung? lol

  • This guy was one hell of a musician, but was a bad mother as well...he had his throat slit whilst playing a session and just carried on. would put all these pants gangster rappers to shame. not only has he more talent but sings about real pain and suffering these rappers will never experience again. god bless the pre war and chicago era blues artists...

  • why are you putting rappers in the mix??? This is Charley Patton singing and playing the blues...

Jeez, this is why so much shit gets stirred up so easily..

  • I like his style best

    Rattlesnake bleus is my fav

  • i wish there were more pictures of Charley Patton and also video of him performing.

    very bizarre!

  • There are only a few pictures of most blues musicians from the era.

Not that bizarre. He wasn't exactly old when he died.

  • Probably no video footage... would be neat, though. He's really good.

  • There is only ONE picture of him. Forgeddabout video!

  • apparently there is another one!! It looks nothing like the picture we know, its of a big guy with a moustache, looks almost white.

I dont know where it came from but its from a reliable source so im told and its been put on a couple of cd covers. check out the document records site and search for him!!

  • all his contemporaries said he was a small man

  • For centuries to come... listen to the mood, into the music..., never to mention rhythmic or timing or, melodiance or... anything..., just, ..enjoy,.. experience,.. untill bounds.... be....ecetera...

  • This is one of my favorite Charley songs!

  • Definetly!!!

  • Very good video, thanks a lot!

  • Thanks

  • <3 the blues ! thanx for sharing

  • This is really cool stuff. You can hear how he influenced Robert Johnson through his crazy slide techniques. If you have more, please put them on. Thanks

  • I find it hard to listen to Charlie Patton unless im in the right mood. Can't really listen to his music in a relaxing way like I would Peetie Wheatstraw, The Mississippi Sheiks or for a Songster such as Henry Thomas or Frank Stokes. I think Patton sounds good quietly in the background.

  • The real Blues started with Patton

  • it's so good to see that he still has a big fan base. his genius is timeless. i love that he never touches upon a 12 bar phrase in any of his recordings- not many people have the balls to do so.

  • Antológico...,uma pérola do Delta Blues!Muito clássico.

  • Charlie Patton is awesome

  • I think this song was adapted by patton from Papa Charlie Jackson's "All I want is a Spoonful"

  • Miss. Dockery's. Drew. The home of the blues! A Hero !

  • Charley Patton, "Father of Delta-Blues". This one is good and many tried to copy it. Mississippi J Hurt did one version and so forth. The b-side of this recording is " Shake It And Break It, But Don't Let It Fall Mama". Just useless info, but thanks for sharing.

  • Shake It and Break It happens to be my favorite Patton song. Always lifts my mood when I hear it.

  • I can't tell if Charlie is a good natured person or not. What do YOU think? PEAcE.

  • thats a good question... he was in trouble w/ the law alot: "tom rushen blues" is about the shriff who constantly arrested him. plus not too long before his last session he had his throat slashed- who knows..

  • First of all I better say that I'm VomitPart2. OK.

Now...That's true, but than AGAIN man...he sure did make alot of songs about his mom dying and about

God so... I mean, Robert Johnson on the other hand...I don't KNOW how he found the stupidity to drink that poisoned beer even after Blind Boy Willam..SON? (the harmonica player..) slapped it out of his hand TWICE and it STILL kept comin' back...with the cap off. PEAcE.

  • ...yeah, it's hard to imagine someone who could write so many beautiful and sad songs (ex. "prayer of death", "poor me", "hammer blues" etc.) could have no heart. i agree though, it's easier to see Johnson as a prick- hell we did write "i'm gonna beat my woman untill i get satisfied"- haha.

  • I heard he was quire vilolent when he got drunk and would get into fights with his women, and he was meant to have had a big mouth that got him into a lot of trouble(someone once tried to slit his throut and that left him with a ugly scar across his neck).

  • Also, keep in mind that this song is about his cocaine habit.

  • This one was recorded Friday 14 July 1929, Paramount. Many bluesmen have been inspired. I am for sure !

    Thanks for sharing !

  • I hate all these titles such as "Founder of the Delta Blues" or "King of the Delta Blues" and what not which are thrown around by record companies. I think they hinder people making proper judgement of the music.

  • wish there was different pictures of Charley Patton.

  • I don't. Check it out...does it NOT make him seem even MORE legendary? ...and don't say yes. PEAcE.

  • I agree with that, there being no pictures make him seem, well, I wouldn't say legendary, but mysterious. He is certainly a man of legend, but there being only one picture, doesn't give him any representation.

I will always love Mr Charlie Patton however, a man of mystery, legend and the blues.

  • I love R Crumb's Heroes of Blues, Jazz & Country illustrations!

    Thanks for posting this, Otis!

  • Nice one son. This is a great little video for one the greatest pieces music ever recorded. Well done!

  • thank you, sounds good

  • This is great Uncle Charlie Patton was great.

  • Founde of the Delta Blues. What a voice...

  • well done.. love this song too.

  • thanks i enjoyed the song.
