Whereas Marvel comics tend to be about sublimating the cultural shift that was going on at the time: the metamorphosis of America from revolutionary underdog to a rather monstrous empire.
@Jcolinsol Kind of depends on which Marvel comics you're talking about, Jack Kirby's Thor stories for instance with touches like his hammer Mjolnir and the entire pantheon of gods and Kirby's original concept of The Silver Surfer & Galactus are IMHO rooted in mythology.
superhero comics didn't really hit here in Australia until the early 1980s with the advent of the comic book store. Before that news-stands were too slow and unreliable. We read Tintin and Mad Magazine.
thats a little bit unfair to say that marvel comics re invented the comic book genre, sure most of their heroes at that time were results of freak accidents sucha s my all time favorite the incredible hulk but dc(publishers that later would become dc anyway) also did have bizarre characters in stock, such as spectre, plastic man, metal men, aquaman, atom etc. put credit were its due...
@moroihunter I'd say Marvel revitalized the superhero genre, Not that I mean to put down what artists like Carmine Infantino, Gil Kane, Alex Toth, Murphy Anderson, and many others did in doing a revival of DC's heros like The Flash, Green Lantern, The Atom etc, but for me Marvel gave us characters that you could identify with and art that leaped off the page to pull you in thanks to greats like Kirby, Ditko, Steranko etc and gave the superhero comic a vitality not seen since the early 1940s.
@MarreroBoss91 presentation wise i will agree with you, but after that shitpitt that was shadowland, i think dc has the upperhand (for the time being, for me anyways). image is gd too. chew is awwwwsooommmmme
@Hellride7 LoI I Respect that, and shadowland was awful but for me growing up on the uncanny X-men of the 90's I Suck up everything Marvel does comic wise.Batman (in my opinion) is the only major dc hero that has a darkness in the tone of comics.
I Love that pic of stan at 9:02 of him with the little cigar, he almost looks like JJ Jameson!!! Stan once said he based JJ on himself! Which i cant see cause i met him last week and he was such a wonderful man, very gentle like a grandpap you wanted to hug!
But Stan didn't usually write scipts. Stan would give him a brief summary of the next issue, Jack would draw it, telling the story anyway he wanted, leaving space in every panel for dialogue. Then Stan would place the Dialogue based on Jack's drawing. To answer ur question, if u were gunna draw a picture of a person just standing there, u would of course leave space because, noone would want to just see a person standing there without saying anything. Basically, u just know
Jack Kirby would simply have any important artistic elements of the panel near the center, while leaving room near the top of each panel for captions and dialogue.
Did Stan just make that story up about coming up with the "Marvel" name? I remember seeing Golden Age "Timely" era comics that had insignia saying they were "A Marvel Comic".
marvel means amazing or astonishing stan took it off of timely comics first comic title which was marvel comics dc also uses this dc stands for detective comics which was the title batman appeared in
The narration on this thing is odd. I can't identify the accent at all. I do know that's not how you pronounce Marie Severin's first name or John Buscema's last name. Also, did y'all notice that when he said Marie's name they showed her picture, but when they said Ditko they showed Big John B? Ha!
Steve Ditko was/is a very private man and doesn't like having his face shown. He said his art spoke for itself. The artist behind the art is unimportant.
From what I've read, DC worked in the usual format: writer writes a story and then an artist would illustrates it. Marvel, on the other hand, many times had an artist illustrate parts of a story and then a writer would write a plot around it.
not exactly...the marvel way was to have the writer (or editor) provide a general outline...then the artist would draw the entire story, and the writer would fill in the dialogue...however, many times the artist just did the whole thing
JACK KIRBY MADE MARVEL and the new fans of comics need to know it. Kirby was clearly not just drawing Stan's ideas. THE FACTS: Kirby joins Marvel and shortly after, they have a thousand new and inventive characters. Kirby leaves Marvel and creates an entire universe of characters for D.C., many of which are still huge. Stan, at this time, QUITS WRITING. Jack comes back to Marvel and creates more characters that are still quite big. The facts are undeniable. Stan was GREAT but JACK WAS THE KING.
A differences between Marvel and DC was the marvel super heroes had some flaw. Peter Parker(Spiderman) outcast nerd with financial problems, Don Blake(Thor) Lame. Robert Bruce Banner (Hulk) a temper. Matt Murdock (Dare Devil) Blind. Fantastic Four always squabbled. Submariner villian almost as often as a hero. Hawkeye, Black Widow, Quick Silver and Scarlet Witch started out as villians and became heroes. Later more extreme the Punisher(killed), and Elektra (an assasin).
I grew up as a DC guy always loved DC but I've laltley been on a Marvel kick especially Spidey, X-Men, and the Fantastic 4 love the stuff

How did Jack know how much space to leave for dialogue "bubbles" that Stan would add later?
FlamingoKicker 2 years ago
Usually a script is written before the art is done.
