Up here on Grand Lake, we have sirens that blow when they open the spill ways. They sound just like tornado sirens so we really never know what's happening!! We can't figure out if it's for the opening of the gates or a tornado!

they've always worked in my experience, but i dont know if they've ever failed. in a real tornado they sound much louder, sometimes they'll go off if theres just a really bad storm so there is some warning, but there was a time i only had minutes to get to the hall

also in addition to sarkazma's comment, in my city, Midwest City, we would also get a emergency warning on the TV and/RADIO with a computerized automated voice giving details and instructions. usually, we get about 15 min or more. But we know about all day that a storm with possible tornadoes are coming. So those days, we pay extra attention to the TV
