I cant believe Ron Paul is spewing such uninformed crap about the medical debate issue. For the millionth time, the government plan is to provide an insurance plan, not the actual medical care. For all those who care to get the facts straight, medical insurance in the US does not provide health care, it pays for it, and only reluctantly at best. If you were to eliminate the entire insurance industry, medical care would still exist, you would just need to figure out the payment system.

Canada's system also only pays for medical reluctantly at best. I gaurantee most Canadians pay FAR more in premiums and taxes than their doctor's visits costs. And just try to get prescriptions and any kind of extended care without an employer to support it.

That is factually incorrect. Our prescription drugs are much cheaper, and medical costs are lower if you compare the procedures. When my dad came down with brain cancer while living and working in Hong Kong, he came back to Canada, had his operations and chemo done, no questions asked, no bills to pay. Government needs access to medical records to help in providing medical care. Its more efficient, and allows for tailoring of medical care to the person.

It's not factually incorrect, when you consider the very high taxation, and understand that inflation is also a hidden tax, and put that together with monthly premiums vs. actual usage.

And I totally disagree that the Gov't provides efficient care. What they provide is a cap for the pay of all medical personnel, mandating longer hours, as well as the care they provide.

Of course the usage of this medical care probably rises dramatically when people are doing as they now are doing and going to see the doctor over every little sniffle and sneaze. I think it's very humerous that people are actually wearing surgical masks in the waiting rooms of clinics now!

For starters, Canada's taxation isnt that terribly high. Secondly, inflation in Canada is no worse than the US, especially now since the US is printing money left right and centre, and destroying the dollar. Monthly premiums in Alberta have been removed, but when we had them, they were negligable, and subsidized for those who couldnt afford them. I think the best system would be a privately provided health care, paid by a public insurance program.

For starters, Alberta pretends to have the lowest taxes in Canada, what you don't probably realize is that the prices of your standard of living more than makes up for that (ie the hidden tax).

Secondly, now that the oil companies have given the Alberta's gov't the big f- you, I wouldn't expect this monthly premium to be removed forever.

Cost of living and taxes are different issues. The gvrnt in Alberta doesnt regulate cost of living, the market sets it, so its not a hidden tax. If you want to argue if the lower taxes offset cost of living, thats a seperate debate. You cant change definitions to fit your argument when you are wrong. Alberta is probably the most insulated area from the economic disaster. Until oil is no longer needed, we will be fine, nobody is making any more oil, and supply is finite.

You're right, the gov't of Alberta doesn't regulate the cost of living, it's actually set by inflation/ deflation (or more accurately the devaluation or valuation of the currency), which is dictated by your very own BOC, which is beyond Alberta's provincial gov't, and even the federal gov't of Canada, in consideration of the golden rule.

Alberta has gotten away with not charging very much taxation largely because of it's oil.

Wrong, cost of living is set by supply and demand. Sometimes inflation and deflation are the results of supply and demand, and monetary policy, but those are symptoms, not causes. The BOC sets interests rates mostly on par with the US central bank.

There is no argument that Alberta's oil is its primary economic driver.

The price to be paid for living is determined by how much the currency's worth. THEN supply and demand can play on each other in relation to cost of living. In other words, you have to know how much the currency is worth in order to figure out a reasonable price balance between merchant and consumer.

The BOC dictates also how much money is in circulation for the country, as well as interest rates, and therefore they dictate how much the dollar's worth.

Which is why up until very recently, all monies were backed by gold. And in that way, prices were MUCH more stable, than they are now.

I've heard from someone I find to be very credible that an oz. of gold today will buy approximately the same amount of goods as it would've even back in Rome 2,000 years ago.

that is incredibly incorrect. Prices fluctuate based on productivity, efficiency and the environment. Food would be much cheaper today than in Roman times since it is cheaper to make (better farming techniques, etc.), but labour intensive items would be more expensive since we no longer allow for slavery. Also the amount of gold has changed considerably in relation to economic output, there isnt enough gold to back all the real productive assets in the world.

Purchasing power is the value of the currency. No one determines some ephemeral value of a currency then sets prices. Prices reflect the value of paper money. If too much paper is floating around with too few goods to purchase, then inflation occurs. The reason living costs are higher in Alberta than Ontario for example is supply and demand, not the currency since both use the Canadian dollar. You are mixing up concepts and oversimplifying them.

I've already pointed out that the BOC does precisely that, because they control how much money is in circulation and therefore, yes they do control how much inflation occurs.

And in regards of there being enough gold to back all the real productive assets in the world, that is a subject I haven't studied, I merely repeated what I've heard from someone I hold to be more credible than a poster on YouTube.

Prescriptions in the water are a result of people dumping pills down toilets or sinks, and from the urine of people taking medicines. This is a big problem, but not one created intentionally. Just because some food is genetically engineered does not mean its dangerous. For all intents and purposes, we have been doing genetic engineering on a basic level of thousands of years through selective breeding. If you dont think vaccines are a good thing, then to people with small pox and polio.

That is how capitalism works. Business takes care of business, and government takes care of social issues. The friction created by both parties working on seemingly competing interests actually creates enormous wealth and prosperity. The problem is when business coopts government, which is the current state of affairs. A desperate need exists to reform campaign finance, and I believe term limits for senators and congressmen should be introduced.

A little correction there on ideologies. as what you've described as capitalism is actually socialism which is a slippery slope towards communism which is what our N. American gov'ts are busy setting themselves up for.

Capitalism is where social programs are run by society (ie local communities, cities, or states) ONLY, and the Federal Gov'ts role is simply to provide military for protection, judicial authorities, and lawmakers.

Kosmoincalgary, I would partially agree EXCEPT Monsanto has had implants in the gov.  Presently the Food Safety Rep for the FDA is an ex-Monsanto executive. Monsanto works hand in hand with the FDA as is many of the Major Food corporations SOOOO to say that it is private industry is totally over looking the in bed practice and relationship between the two. It is very important not to ignore this.

What you are essentially saying is that private interests have put people into government to coopt the machinery of government for their own benefit. That is what I commented on above. The private interests of individuals are not confined to private business, it translates into everything, the problem with government is how to create a system that is ressistant to being coopted for private gain.

Even polio wasn't eradicated by vaccines, Ron. Improved nutrition, clean water, hygiene awareness; these things free us of disease while things like vaccines do nothing to protect us. Sometimes, vaccines can actually spread the disease, such as the live polio vaccine forced upon Nigerians who were too malnourished to fight off what was being injected into them. And combining vaccines over time is a tragedy for our children.
