Dave i have 2 questions 1 have you ever tried to heat rocks and then place them in your bed area and then place dirt back over the rocks for the night.my 2 is on the snares. could the snare wire gotten cold enough to have snapped off.You know as well as I do that when medal get below freezing it will snap off like a twig, so I'm thinking the snare wire was frozen and as the animal fought to get free the snare wire snapped off.because it was frozen
Hey Dave is that a silicone-nylon tarp? How close is the fire to the tarp? I like the idea of being able to have the fire close to the shelter, but don't you worry about sparks and embers hitting the nylon?
Dave, good job on the vid's, sabath asked how you keep snakes from get'n cozy during the night, the thing is snakes in north America, at least where it gets cold hibernate, in den's under ground. Winter camping is one of my favorites too, though my fire reflector is normally 3 sided.
the animal mostly a Rabbit may have mostly been taken by a Fox or Bobcat so I'd not go to hard on ya self as it's mostly been taken by another predator.... I come a cross the same thing from time to time when traping Rabbit... and it's normaly Foxes or Cats some time wild Dogs.that pinch them.
personally im a desert boy, so im trying to think of a way to have a single blanket thatll do the job of like 5 if need be. id like to get your 2 cents on it. first off wool, with a cotton sheet over it (quilted) but inside on either side of the wool, one of those survival blanket things. even if it rips most is held in place. so sheet, blanket, wool, blanket, sheet. id rather carry this and put the effort into it than to freeze at night.
If you angle the base stakes the other way, and then place the wood on the stakes, it could be used to feed the fire. As the bottom log burns, then the second log will be fed into the fire.
Another thing that I learned about using the snow for water, from the Cold Weather Leaders Course in the US Army, is that you want to make sure you get your snow from the highest ground possible near your camp because animals urinate and stool in the woods possibly contaminating your snow. Get it from higher ground because that contamination runs down hill. You also want to make sure you bring the water to a rolling boil, don't just heat it up. Boiling kills any bacteria that lives in your snow
if eating snow is bad for your core body temperature is that only because its cold? Wouldn't the stuff that remains in snow after you boil it not be good for you? just wondering
have you ever used a Jeremiah Johnson style sleeping bed by diggin a trench an layering it with simmering coals and a lil dirt an sleeping on top of that?
A broken snare could also indicate the presence of a larger predator like a coyote, fox, wolf, or woodland cat. I've had broken snares with two sets of tracks around them, of both the animal I caught, and the scavenger leading away from the trap site. Foxes will often actually follow humans at a distance and scavenge trapped or killed small game.
Living in MN, there are ALOT of cold weather tricks to make it go better.
stay dry, don't sweat. when you think you have enuff wood, get 5x more. Always build a fire deflector, and build wind breaks for your shelter. and realize how many calories you need, the cold really takes it outa ya
All the truth-telling about "screw-ups" is refreshing because we ALL do it sometimes. One note: the animal that escaped did an awful lot of unneccesary suffering, too. Better next time. Keep 'em coming, dave.
We need people like you Dave, honest, intelligent, personable, informative! You and your family are welcome in Tennessee ANYTIME!! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I'll be sharing these vids with all the members of the 59th tn civil war re-enactors!!!
i love the way you say 'this is the life, winter camping is AWESOME' you are so right, watching your videos makes me want to get out there more, you are inspiration to us all.
oo that would be an experience killing one with a bow i saw a vid somewhere i guy used his compound bow and took one down. I love how they taste keep up the good work with the survival vids
dave, are you sure a larger animal did not take your catch before it snowed..... you wouldn't see any tracks and it would explain the broken line.....
I actually thought about that last night while relaxing It is also minimally possible a larger animal(deer) my have stepped into the snare and broke it. It was a clean break so I dont believe the snare failed-Great observation!
wow now thats a serious woodsman right there........dave did you just camp last night on the 27th they said this is the biggest winter storm of the year,up here on the erie shores we got hammered with snow, shit its still snowin we must have got over a foot since last night
well damn i was wondering what you were going to catch...to bad man that sux....also good advice w/ the warm eats right before bed..i try to always get in a hot cup when winter camping here in AK....keep up the good work sir

Dave one suggestion for your fire.

eating snow also de-hydrates you because it takes more water to digest it than what you get out of it
ROTTIMAN31 2 years ago
i don't know about that. you're not digesting snow you're using it for your cells...

well if you use the top layers of snow and melt it down, then it will heat it up and make it safe.
