Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts. . Shut not thy merciful ears unto our prayers; . But spare us, Lord most holy. . O God most mighty . O holy and most merciful Father . Thou most worthy Judge eternal . Suffer us not at our last hour . For any pains of death to fall from Thee. . Amen.
I don't know what it is about this song, but i love it too much! It touches the deepest recesses of my soul! Its both deeply mournful but joyous at the same time. He was truely a soulful and talented composer.
Ouch! Good comeback. I thought this performance was beautiful. It deserved to be recorded in a High Quality Digital format. I wish I could have seen it live.
Considering that God is a completely imaginary entity, there have been some absolute masterpieces written in his name. Mozart's Requiem, Bach's Mass in B minor and, above all else, this. Purcell is the dog's and ranks with the greatest.
You're just imagining that God is an imaginary entity. Music is also imaginary of course. Any animal devoid of imagination hears nothing but a random string of sounds. Considering that music is imaginary, they have made a reasonable job of making songs to praise a very real God!
Many thanks. I'm a Polish resident and a Polish taxpayer, but other than that I'm British. But I also have a theory (which might make a good video actually - hey I think you've given me Huliganov's monthly rant for September) that learning any language actually makes you a part of that nation, in a sense.
Care to elaborate? I should say that learning a language influences thought, and that once you start to think in the instrument of a people you become bound to them in a way more meaningful than simply holding the legal document of a nation, but never thinking in their language. If not, why not?
I don't know how widely English is spoken in Poland, but their pronunciation is perfect. I could understand every word. This is a very sensitive and beautiful performance.
beautiful... absolutely beautiful... love the way you put the lyrics... sometimes i find it a bit hard to understand what choirs sing... thank you so much!!! ;)
Ah, Purcell's anthems, of which even we godless materialists are in awe. Didn't any of the Poles object to a performance of Anglican music in a Catholic church?
I'm not sure that was completely true in any century. Three of the founders of Anglican choral tradition (Byrd, Tallis and Tomkins) were Catholic. Heinrich Schuetz studied with the Gabrielis in Venice. Bach wrote many of his Masses to be used in both Catholic and Lutheran services. I could go on and on, but you get the idea.
Wonderful Recording! And I think the tempo is perfect for the Funeral of Queen Mary 2:0 Warm Wishes - Denise

Absolutely love this peice but can't say I agree with the tempo of this performance. Needs to be quicker, in my humble opinion.

Should all funeral compositions be set to dance beats, or just this particular one?

God is totally imaginary and there is no need for one in an enlightened populace.
Now stop being silly and pack it in :-)

Sehr schöne Aufnahme. Wunderbare klare Sopräne. Ausdrucksstarke Interpretation.
Leider ist der Alt oft sehr unrein.

They will be happy to read that. Richard Berkeley does a great job over their accents - he also gives voice training to actors.

Very nice. The church is quite live, acoustically, inspiring reverence.

It certainly is very well built acoustically. They knew how to do that in bygone days.

I'm also very happy to sing "Angularis fundamentum lapis Christus missus est". ;-)
