Walter Issacson is an idiot. It should have been clipping to non-square windows, not lack of overlap.
The whole point of bitblit was to have overlapping windows.
Of course they had it among a millon other things the guys designing UIs today are only now starting to pick up on. As a small example look at the scrollbars disappearing when they are not used. OSX has only now done that.
