  • ok im helplessly confused with playin a guitar i think tht ill stick with drums keyboard and clarinet

  • You explain it so clearly and at a suitable speed. Very good teaching! A really nice guy, too!

  • propa chunka chunka

  • Very pedagogic!! I really like your course Justin :D

    Thumbs up ;)

  • hahaha girls are just girls in my eyes. nothing more. guys are just guys. nothing more. equal. i thought it was hilarious cos i'm this girl sitting here with my guitar trying to learn new stuff.. and he's like... "every young man's life..." i looked down, laughed and said. "oh" haha. =]

  • @candymiser Haha! Don't we just love Youtube!

  • @candymiser go do the dishes!

  • @FrankDiggz lmfao

  • @FrankDiggz lmfao

  • @candymiser Yeah, that's the one and only thing I don't care for on his webiste of lessons. He seems to think everyone who takes his lessons are guys. Maybe most of his in person students are guys. I think he's better about it in his new lessons. He often says, "Hello dudes and dudettes" so that's nice!!

  • psshhkk, young man. psshhhkk.

  • I have had lots of trouble learning guitar. This is very helpful. Thank you for taking time to do this and explain its value to music.

  • Does anybody know what scales are???

    Why are they so important???

  • @Shantb12345 coz without the scales u cant solo thats how u solo if u learn the 5 positions of the penatonic scale u can solo from anywhere on the fretboard :)

  • They're for building finger strength and endurance,

and if you're writing music they might be helpful.

They're extremely useful for blues music too,

    this one particular.

  • @Shantb12345 to make it understanding for you, they are used to make solos, and they are the building blocks for chords. they make different chords depending on what key you're in and what scale your using. you'll understand what im talking about when you learn more guitar.

  • thank you very very very very much :)

  • thank u

  • this is (Am) pentatonic lease more!

  • wow lol you can hear the police in the background they coming for u run man!

  • Could you make two vids please. i can pick up what your playing in two seconds and i'd like to learn all 5 scales in a 1 min video

  • i like the anchor idea

  • i just learned how to use scales from a cool website...i feel kinda stupid for not learning it before but o well you never learn everything at once

  • I feel retarded watching this, I'm not exactly a "beginner", i just neglected to go through this stuff and taught myself, until my cousin showed me this, well i thought id watch it

  • Same here XD

  • haha me too i know all the chords but i have fuck all idea about penatonic scales XD

  • thanx man!

  • its weird. every single youtube video shows a different "minor scale", even the ones named "harmonic a minor pentatonic scale". ive got no clue by what to go by.

  • Dude, I love your teaching. I haven't been able to get guitar very well. But you made it a little easier. THANKS ALOT!

  • By "Man" I'm Sure he refers to "Mankind" Meaning wo"MAN" and "MAN"

    Dumb assholes ;D naah kidding

    Awesome stuff justin thanks again

    I download all these! ;)

  • A young MAN'S life? I feel so excluded right now ;-p ("hehehehee" or "lol" for those who can't seem to grasp irony and humour)

  • can u teach me on 1:44 - 1:51? : )

  • plays scales is easy its just about shapes.if u look at this scale it kinda looks like a H

  • WHAT A BABY!

  • wow your a fucking retard purplemonster46

  • wow bitch...

  • Haha, not being whiny at all. I still used the tutorial. I just agreed with the part of her saying that females do play guitar as well.

  • calm down he probably didn't mean that when he said that.

  • hey dont take it seriously!!!! and girls barely play guitar anyways.=D

  • its just a way of saying

  • in most of the fairy tales its starts with "once upon a time there was a girl" did you hear any guys complain about it..?its just a phrase he is using!he's mayb one of the nicest ppl in dis world...dont you think you are being a bit harsh on him..? of course you're welcomed....

newa personaly i think girls are gods best creation and dont think justin will contradict my statement!

    cheers!

  • ??!!! just a piece of avice to u from ur brother: try to make ur ife a lot easier don't make a problem from nothing, maybe he didn't mean anything here :( I have a friend "girl" and she plays guitar so much better than me !!!! ur right

  • I completely agree. Females play guitar too, just to let all of you know. Choice of words, man, choice of words.

  • dont be such a girl

  • lmao

  • Thanks for that but don't forget some of us kids are older than you

  • Why is my hand so damn small!!!!!! It's impossible for me!!!

  • lol

  • Justin, this is pretty kickass for beginners, I find it really hard to try and explain things to people but I'll be sending peeps here!!!

  • thanks man you rock!!!

  • thanks a lot man.

  • Many thanks!

  • you should pay attention then...

  • Completely agree

  • thank you so much for that, from a girl!

  • I suppose he means women don't have to learn because they are epic.

  • Hai, I'm so epic I had to learn, sending my love from a chick~!^_^:P

  • thank you for teaching me this scale and your right this is my first scale and its fun

  • HOW DO YOU KNOW what fret to play it on (which fret do u put ur first finger)?

    amazing guide btw 5/5 =]

  • i am getting the hang of this. it is not that hard once you get the hang of it

  • i learned so much. i practised this untill my wrist cramped up

  • Hello. Once again I wonder if you`re playing the minor pentatonic scale in the key of G. Do you then start on the third fret and ends on the fifteen freet.??

  • If your playing on one string - String E then yeah but thats a completely newbie way to play it. He's playing in A though, 5th Fret

  • the scales i hope you understand what i am trying to say i think maybe it could be that i have picked up bad habits for trying to self teach for so long i would be greatfull if you could help in any way many thanks. jon

  • dear justin your videos are extremely helpfull and by far the best on youtube i have a question though, i have watched your minimum movement lesson and have been trying to employ it whilst learning this scale i'm not a novice but never bothered trying to learn scales before. I am finding this exercise very difficult without putting my other fingers down on the fretted notes that arent sounded is that the best way to learn

  • Thanks man...I'm learning soo much from your vids...

  • doesnt mater i know now

  • does any body know what fret hes playing on?

  • he tells you what frets he plays on. listen close and pay more attention. im not dising you just saying

  • Thank you i appreciate your lessons! You're not only talented on guitar but also on teaching people whom you are not even acquainted with!! Lol!

  • Geez, I learn so much when I watch ur vids...thanks justin!!!!

  • chunka chunka?

    Is that a technical term?

  • yes its true he knows more about but i have a book in which it tells u how to make mayor pentatonic scale thats why i know thats the mayor

  • If you take the first note as the root of the scale then you have... Root, minor 3rd, 4th, 5th, dominant 7th, and back to root.

It's because of the minor 3rd that he calls in a minor pentatonic.

    HTH

    SB

  • man thats not the minor scale thats the mayor scale but im not sure which are theminor scales cause ive been practicing the mayor scales like 3 months ago no offense man

  • Uhh, I gaurantee he knows better than you whats major and minor

  • dude you can't even spell major,

dont even try to shame out justin.. =='

  • very helpful cheers m8

  • i learned this at lessons Monday at was playing lead in the same lesson while my teacher played rhythm, but it helps to have some idea of picking beforehand. i've only been doing this for 8 mos. playing the pentatonic scale is the coolest thing

  • this is the blues scale right

  • thanks a lot ... i owe almost everything i know about guitar playing to you, great teaching, great lesson.

  • my fingers are so small its hard for me to reach along four frets

  • thanks alot u r a great teacher

  • I hate my pinky. It took this video for me to realize that. I am totally unable to use my pinky to hit the low e but either way, this was an awesome tutorial.

  • Great video! I have a question, if you don't mind. Aren't pentatonic scales five-note scales? It seems like you played more than five notes there. More like twelve notes if I'm not mistaken. Does it have to be five notes or can it be more?

  • There are five notes in the scale before you return to the root note.

  • I got it now, thanks to you. :)

  • Thanks

  • good lesson

  • since bought my first guitar a month ago, this video has helped more than any other on youtube to play the minor pentatonic scale. excellent teacher vid, justin - thanks!

  • you are awesome justin, thanks very much

  • thank you so much!!

your lessons help me A LOT

it was really easy to learn by watching, all of your lessons are great.

    thanks justin!

  • thanks alot man ur great

  • so what is this called then like.. minor pentatonic like, if i went to a friend and said play me a minor pentatonic, this is what hed play?

  • i thought it would be reeeeaaaaaalllyy hard but you taught it so well!!

    now i can play it!!

    yay!

  • I'm confused. If a pentatonic is 5 notes for every octave how come there is 6 notes in the pentatonic scale?

  • note 1 and note 6 are the same note.

  • this guy deserves an obe

  • i seen this one in other teachers vids but yours is the best i can do it now im only working on doing it faster and beter

  • Justin, ur absolutly the best teacher by far ive seen, it really surprised me that u took ur time to explain everything from every note to fret, to string. I learned to do the scale very well by watching this. thanks so much. :)

  • good stuff.. what kind of sweatie is that, looks comfortable

  • Hey man. Just wanna thank you for putting your time into these videos you are making, thanks!

    great teacher...

hope to c u some day on the stage, performing live for thousands of people....

  • Justin i mean it u r the best guitar teacher ever u rock dude u helped me sooo much

  • The last part about the right hand was helpful. I am so busy looking at my left hand that I keep missing the strings with my picking hand.

Also, you explained the pentatonic name, great. But why is it called minor again? And can you start it at any base note?

    Thanks.

  • hey man how many time do u have been playing? you very pro i know... i think u play 20 years or more.. i have see your others videos.. and very pro... sry for my sux english..

  • i didn't think my face looked that funny, well not as funny as it looks other times...

thanks dudes and take care, J

  • I know it's probably a dumb question but..I'm learning this pentatonic scale and i just wondered, wich scale is it, like A minor pentatonic or something?

  • yep

  • Thanks alot:D Talk about a lucky guess..o.O

  • great vid... yes, we must learn the scales. hhaahaa... at guitar now 8 months and realizing it... Peace, ~Sharon

  • Pause at 1:52 its even funnier

  • sounds so sad

  • Haha. Pause the video at 1:43. The look on his face is hilarious.

  • lmfao soo funny

  • lol very funny

  • thats a ryt lick at around 1:40 show off! :P

  • Thats is true teachers are the devil

  • oh also, thanks again for taking the time to teach the scale on youtube. Very useful when I jam with friends. Side note for everyone still learning guitar, google a guy named Will Landrum , awsome free newsletter with guitar lessons.

  • when u hit the second note do u pull of the first finger of the fret or do u keep it on the fret?

  • justin I have been taking lessons for a couple of months now and he just started me on this scale . May I ask how long each day should I practice this scale? Thanks Gil

  • Looks like he doesn't answer, so I will try instead: Well... Practise. And remember that it's better to practise 10 minutes each day, rather then 1 hour once a week... But just practise. And have fun. If u do have fun while playing, time doesn't matter. Good luck!

    Stein

  • Hello Stein thanks for the reply and I am hoping you the best in your guitar work and I am practicing about 1 hour/day Gil

  • Thats' good.I'm sure you will improve fast. And remember to practice with the right technique's and basics. Always keep your thumb and fingers vertical, and use correct finger positions. =)

    Stein

  • Thanks for all the help and my guita teached taugh me to keep my thum as you say however i have noticed that I have not been keeping that low as it seems really hard to do especially at the low end of the fret board. I will really watch that and hvw started using a metronome using at 120 B/minI would like to ask you some question from time to time if it is ok with you .. Gil in Tennessee

  • Thank you sir! Great lesson!

  • Justin, your awesome! I've learned quite a few songs from you!!!

  • Thank you so much Justin. I appreciate your effort and clarity.

  • This little scale just gave me 3 hours of free styling and creative solo's, unfortunately my finger tips are now literally bleeding and I have to stop, thank you for bringing me one step closer to Hendrix.

  • ROFL!!!!!!! If the minor pentatonic scale is all you know your a far far far way from hendrix....sorry dood keep trying lol

  • ROFL!!!!! your far off from hendrix if all you know is a pentatonic scale....LOL keep trying dood im sure you'll get there some day lol.....

  • funny how devotion can sprout such amazing things, since I first watched this and learned petatonic scale, well lets just say in one month I'm now playing nothing else matters using finger picking. Yet again, one step closer to hendrix. BTW check out a band called Dragonforce for some insane guitaring.

  • thank you for this video it is very well done. guitar is my life i dunno what id do without my guitar :D

  • wow dude thnx alot! rock on!

  • That anchor technique is a great one. Thanks. I was having trouble with string accuracy and anchoring your pinkie definitely helps.

  • Thanks !!!!

  • Is this also reffered to as the Blues Scale?

  • Indeed

  • The minor scale and the minor pentatonic scale. Is there any difference? :O And about the video... is that the only position in the minor pentatonic scale? Since the major scale have 5 positions. I have heard something about a "blues scale" too. Is a minor pentatonic scale the same as a blues scale? I`m sorry about all the questions, but I really need answers before I keep on learning something else... Thanks :) And btw, this video has really helped me out :D But made some more questions XD

  • wow... I want to answer some of your questions. First: yes, there's a difference between thoses two scales: the way they sound in context. You can play the minor diatonic scale in Am and then try to play with pentatonic. It doesn't sound exactly the same because one scale has seven notes with some characteristics among them and the pentatonic has just five notes from those seven. was I clear? I hope I helped...

  • thanks!! that helped me! :D ...and again, thanks :D

  • THANKS! That helped me out a lot!

  • great teacher thanks a lot!!!

  • dont talk to this guy like that hes probably way more experienced than any1 u know

  • "there comes a time in every young man's life..." ....I'm not a young man :[

  • there are girls who play guitar as well!!!!

  • Hey Justin! En España también te seguimos y agradecemos tus lecciones!

  • Make sure you download his PDF files for all this or you'll miss it! Great tutorial!!

  • thankx man

  • Just remmember when u are playing pentatonics once you know all the shapes you can shift them up n down the next to play in any key you wish! also for each ddiffrent place you learn the scale you are essentially learnign two scales (Eminor=Gmajor/Aminor=Cmajor) just sumthing to think about...

  • This Is The 3rd Video I've Seen That I Hear Coop Sirens In The Back, LOL! Anyway Thanks For Your Lesson Videos!!!

  • Thank you man! I've been trying like hell to learn scales. This will help a lot! :D

  • But, he says to down pick, but he alt picks...?

  • This is a cool dude! He's a lot of help.

  • I just learned (like yesterday) how to play a pentatonic scale but this really reinforced it well, thanks.

  • Justin, I've been playing for only a few weeks and even I managed to get this after watching the video only once! Superb job. If I lived in London you'd be hired unless you want to travel to Yorkshire?!

  • thanks dude

  • thaanks..:)

  • u should go that slow its prety simple to learn pentatonic minors and its a little boring but good playin
