I don't really find the tuba to be an especially comical instrument. (Well... maybe. :P) But yeah, I got into the tuba because it is the single most powerful sounding instrument in the orchestra. Listen to the finale of ride of the valkyries, its pretty epic. :P

@beaglemanzzz The piano has a lower range in comparison to any instrument on a orchesta, or higher (range), if that matters. It suprasses the tuba in power.

You should listen to Liszt Totentanz or Ballade 2 for an example of lower registers. Just a suggestion. :x

I can play below the piano with my BBb tuba. It sounds pretty nasty and isn't very loud, but a pianist can only stare at the low A and sigh. :P As for the most powerful sounding instrument in the orchestra, pretty much every composer I've ever heard writes for tuba when they need a powerful wall of bass sound, something no other instrument can manage.

Ballade 2 of Liszt as mentioned is meant to be played on 97 keys Bosendorfer Imperial (very low register). Still contrabass / subcontrabass tuba wins...(white flag)!

I'm not of the belief that one instrument is superior to another, they're just different. Both the piano and the tuba are great instruments in their own ways, and besides, playing in an ensemble isn't about who's better than who, it's about making music together. :D

I like this, I think for playing by ear you have it down pretty good. But, you give off what I call the "growling sound". You also sound a bit off tune. I suggest playing with your teeth not closed shut, make sure your mouth is completely open and your lips give an "O" shape. I prefer to play with the "frowny O" where the corners of my mouth are upside-down, But, that's a personal preference. Also make sure that the mouth piece isn't pressing hard on your mouth-as it can often strain the lips.

You should try playingthe beggining part normally played by baritone and piccolo, that's what i did and it was awesome!
