WHY IS THIS PEDAL SO ANNOYING TO TURN OFF! sometimes it works soemtimes it doesnt.. i dont wanna have to stamp hard to turn it off everytime. Im gonna have to sell mine! anyone want it for $115
Custard Pie! Led Zeppelin is the reason I play. Anyway, I would recommend using this pedal as a boost in front of a VOX AC30C2. It should push it right into that sweet spot.
Andy, could you please do a new review of the TS-9, because in the video you have on it sounds really fuzzy/distortion like. I was watching the video and I was kind of dissapointed. I wanted to hear some real SRV tones and all, but it sounds so rock-like.
All the tube screamers dont sound like tubescreamers in your videos, howcome?
So I've come to the conclusion as a gigging guitarist an amp and really nice pedalboard is the way to go. What in your opinion is the best amp in the $1000.00 range for pedals. I was looking at the DRRI and also the custom vibroluxe reverb. Is there a better choice.
@anthony0803 .......@Anthony DrZ MAZ38Sr,about 1400...the 18 watters sound fantastic but then you would still want a 38 for headroom....I can use just 1 pedal to do the trick, none if you have dynamics !!
@FlameDGs Maxon for sure dude....unless u get an ts808, your not gonna come close to the real tone. TS9 is way different, believe me ive owned 2 and a regular ts9 isn't really worth it. maxon for sure.. the OD9 is where its at. check out some demos
Hey, kinda silly question, but does the LED on this show up well under most circumstances/are there any circumstances where the LED *doesn't* show up well? The TS9 LED is quite dim, IMO.
does this pedal go well with el84's on the power amp? say a mathcless dc30? please help as i really like the sound of the review, but would it sound like that in a dc30? tanks
I do not believe in true bypass. if I plug the guitar straight into amp and play it will sound identical if I plugged the pedal but without it be working?
Can someone guide me or something... i have the maxon od-808 and a pedal board. when i switch to clean on my pedal board going from distortion i still have my pedal on and it muds up the clean channel obviously. anyone have a suggestion or am i going to have to switch the Od-808 off before switching to clean..
@XxXUnLoAdEdXxX Dude have a look at the Gigrig. It's a great switching system that puts your pedals in loops, and uses relay switching to create patches. Each patch will only use the loop you have preset to it, and you can have up to 6 loops on any of 8 presets you program yourself (couldn't be easier btw) on their midi 8 model. So you can go from having dist, comp, delay, phase, whatever, to a clean sound (or with your tubesreamer activated) in the touch of a button. A must have for pedals.
@hate420breed If you've got a high gain amp, like a 6505, 5150, Krank, etc., use a Tube Screamer or one of it's 10 000 available replica in front of the amp, gain at 0, level as desired, tone as desired.
@guitarfreak122. Yo, whatsup guitarfteak, not tryin to bo one of those know it all douches, just a little FYI for all. I own an origina SD-9l (bought new)I think Maxon actually made the whole pedal...circuit, die-cast case, battery cover. Ther name and logo is all over the pedal on the inside.
This sounds grittier and crunchier than a TS9. I owned both a TS9 and Turbo TS and sold them both cus they just didn't really do what I wanted. I used them with a JCM 800 and the sound just wasn't there. I'd like an overdrive that has enough guts to be the actual distortion signal on the low input.
Would this work well with a Mesa Single Rectifier? I heard it can really bring out the gain, and I was looking at using it for a good high gain like BTBAM or Opeth.
do people use tubescreamers for metal? i always thought that they boosted their signals with higher gain pedals like the distortion+ or louder "clean" boosts like the micro amp
I wouldn't say that. I don't use Boss myself, I don't really like 'em. Bot a whole lot of guys, even pros, get great results with Boss pedals. But yeah, I think their drives sound a bit to raspy and "pedally". The BD-2 is quite decent though!
@topografer There are good ones too. Metal ones are crap, like the Metal Zone, but for example the distortion DS-1 is one of the best worldwide (if Vai, Frusciante and people like this uses it there must be a reason!), and the same is for the Fuzz FZ-5, the clean Booster/Feedbacker and the Delays...And BOSS is cheap!
@dbenc no, not the same. Maxon Od 9 has the "famous" jrc4558d chip, Ibanez TS 9 reissue has another one which sounds worse. The difference between a TS 9 and a TS 808 are about the chip and the value of two output resistors.
I'm getting confused on wat to get now! This, Ts9, Ts808, or ts9dx. I play rock and blues and alot of the time i would use it as a boost, but sometimes just to push my tube amp into overdrive. Any advice?
I would stay away from Ibanez and go for Maxon (which is basically vintage ibanez sold new). TS9s and 808s have lack of bass...this one: none. Check out any Maxon OD any of them will be perfect for you.
@ProGuitarShopDemos does this pedal go well with el84's on the power amp? say a mathcless dc30? please help as i really like the sound of the review, but would it sound like that in a dc30? thanks
@dragonboy2992 This pedal sounds great on my Mesa Triple Rectifier (and Peavey 5150) on the 2nd channel. I don't set the gain THAT high on the amp(1 o clock on vintage high gain), and also set this pedal for more of a clean boost, and it makes a tight crunch and turn the gain up more and you can play all sort of metal (that's what most metal/metalcore bands do anyway i.e. Killswitch Engage, God Forbid, etc.)
what's better, this or the od808? there's like a $7 difference at guitar center and i have more then enough money. and believe me i've looked at nearlly all other ODs so i know what i want. So please don't recommend a different pedal to me...and sorry for bein picky. :/
the difference in sound isn't big, but the main difference is that this uses a tube circut, while the od808 uses solid state. thats the main difference
If you get it modded by keeley or AnaLoGmAn it is IMO better than a TS9 modded by Keeley. It has true bypass and a more organic analog sound. It is also made in the old TS9 factory. The new TS9's are not.
That's 'cause Maxon -made- these for Ibanez. Now that Maxon isn't affiliated with Ibanez, they focus on more premium quality versions of the pedals they used to make for Ibanez
compressions all good if you play like All That Remains, etc. but really a guitar needs these types of boosted mids for cool overdrive leads. I play through a Mesa Boogie Road King II and setting it to the brit channel (plexi marshall type sound) and turning on an od gives a great zeppelin-y type chime/slap
I praise this pedal for having the same stuff inside as the original TS9, but this pedal to me sounds kind of mucky and doesn't have that clarity I want. maybe just my preferences, I don't know
the guys in killswitch both use this exact pedal. They run it along with the dirty channel on their amps. If you are looking for a very crushing distorted tone, you probably wont find it with stomp boxes. You need to find an amo with a good channel two.
what a lot of metal guys do, is they set the gain on their amp to 4-5, then they turn on an OD that has the drive turned all the way down and the level turned up a bit. it gives you a tight, chunky sound
one of these running as a boost (so the gain all the way down) this tightens up your sound and gives it some punch. run this all the time, and for distortion it's your choice really. the krank krankenstein distortus maximus has a variable sound and is 'modern' sounding. or you could just run two overdrives next to each other - one as a boost, then one with some gain dialled in to use for the louder bits. its all good!
Likea Metal zone or somthing.. What amp are you using... i normally use my amps Distortion. and get an overdrive pedal(like the maxon OD808) and my line 6 half stack distortion.
Maxon was the OEM for Ibanez. A brand new Maxon "tube screamer" is more authentic than a new Ibanez Tube Screamer. Maxon was always the real thing . Ibanez is now the fake.
Actually, I believe that this style of box was developed by Maxon, since they were the ones building the original Ibanez pedals (TS included) back in the 70`s. They must have all the rights to use it.
hes right, maxon DID build these for ibanez until a certain point, watch. put the same settings on this as a ibanez ts 9 and a/b them, the maxon will sound more warm, cuz ibanez started making there own (dumb decision)
Wich is better This or the Ibanez TS9?

rockermang 3 years ago
Yes! It is called the PGS intro song. It's not a song. It's our intro.

Hey they're now making maxon OD-9 and more pedals with real mini vaccuum tubes. They'll be out in the late summer-fall. Can't wait for the demos
ghettosweep 3 years ago
i hear so much about these pedals.
so do they like boost high gain tube amps like alot?
cuz pretty much everyone of my fave bands uses this and i must know

Whats the best dist/od pedal combo for a modern rock sound? (paramore, mcr, taking back sunday, billy talent etc.)
theJblackKparadeB 3 years ago
Something that scoops the mids, oh and the lows....yeah that'll do it.
Spaghettaboutit 3 years ago
"Scoops the mids!" If you want scooped mids a TS type pedal is probably the last thing you want, they're famous for they're mid-range BUMP!
WGMSMan 3 years ago 6
one of these running as a boost (so the gain all the way down) this tightens up your sound and gives it some punch. run this all the time, and for distortion it's your choice really. the krank krankenstein distortus maximus has a variable sound and is 'modern' sounding. or you could just run two overdrives next to each other - one as a boost, then one with some gain dialled in to use for the louder bits. its all good!

Likea Metal zone or somthing.. What amp are you using... i normally use my amps Distortion. and get an overdrive pedal(like the maxon OD808) and my line 6 half stack distortion.
1DAngus1 3 years ago
What is an actual difference between OD9 and OD808? They have pretty same controls and sound.

I have one of these and they are great. i use it with my boss ds-1 keeley mod

Maxon was the OEM for Ibanez. A brand new Maxon "tube screamer" is more authentic than a new Ibanez Tube Screamer. Maxon was always the real thing . Ibanez is now the fake.

correct
snapascrew 3 years ago 2
damn this is kinda pricy....is it worth the 50$ more, or the 110$ more than the ts-5?
btw i'd just like to say you guys make the greatest demos, they really show off the pedals well.
Metallicrazy 3 years ago
the sound is amazing plus its true bypass!

stealing ibanez's look... bad style :(
viddelt 3 years ago
Maxon manufactures many Ibanez pedals.
fuzzstrat 3 years ago
Maxon used to be the OEM for Ibanez effects in the 70's so it's not really stealing as Maxon made the pedals for Ibanez!
diddyboy 3 years ago 6
Actually, I believe that this style of box was developed by Maxon, since they were the ones building the original Ibanez pedals (TS included) back in the 70`s. They must have all the rights to use it.
Someone correct me if I`m wrong.
iagobroxado 3 years ago
They actually builded them for Ibanez until 2002.
IbanezFreysi 3 years ago
dude... read the description. if i could slap ya, i would.
t3golf 3 years ago 8
hes right, maxon DID build these for ibanez until a certain point, watch. put the same settings on this as a ibanez ts 9 and a/b them, the maxon will sound more warm, cuz ibanez started making there own (dumb decision)
