  • Wich is better This or the Ibanez TS9?

  • Andy, I happen to LOVE your favorite setting here. The PERFECT use of this pedal, in my opinion.

  • WHY IS THIS PEDAL SO ANNOYING TO TURN OFF! sometimes it works soemtimes it doesnt.. i dont wanna have to stamp hard to turn it off everytime. Im gonna have to sell mine! anyone want it for $115

  • @azwel Sounds like a hardware malfunction. I had a pedal that did that too.

  • I'd sure like a piece of your custard pie Andy.

  • what are differences between this and 808?

  • Custard Pie! Led Zeppelin is the reason I play. Anyway, I would recommend using this pedal as a boost in front of a VOX AC30C2. It should push it right into that sweet spot.

  • I get the feeling this would kick the crap out of my little yellow SD-1.

  • dude, wrong vid... that's a ts-9 by ibanez....

  • @sirjosh87 Wrong comment. That was an original vintage Ibanez TS-9.

  • Andy, could you please do a new review of the TS-9, because in the video you have on it sounds really fuzzy/distortion like. I was watching the video and I was kind of dissapointed. I wanted to hear some real SRV tones and all, but it sounds so rock-like.

All the tube screamers dont sound like tubescreamers in your videos, howcome?

  • can anybody tell me the song of the intro?! love it xD

btw cool reviews! but im thinking about what this song is for months now!

  • Hi Andy,

So I've come to the conclusion as a gigging guitarist an amp and really nice pedalboard is the way to go. What in your opinion is the best amp in the $1000.00 range for pedals. I was looking at the DRRI and also the custom vibroluxe reverb. Is there a better choice.

  • @anthony0803 .......@Anthony DrZ MAZ38Sr,about 1400...the 18 watters sound fantastic but then you would still want a 38 for headroom....I can use just 1 pedal to do the trick, none if you have dynamics !!

  • Song at 3:02?

  • @MindKillSwe Stevie Ray Vaughan - Testify

  • are they good for boosting the guitar sound in solos so people can actually hear you over the rythm and the rest of the band?

  • should i get ibanez ts9 or maxon od9?

  • @FlameDGs Maxon for sure dude....unless u get an ts808, your not gonna come close to the real tone. TS9 is way different, believe me ive owned 2 and a regular ts9 isn't really worth it. maxon for sure.. the OD9 is where its at. check out some demos

  • what do you guys prefer, Maxon OD808 or Maxon OD9 or Ibanez TS9?

  • Hey, kinda silly question, but does the LED on this show up well under most circumstances/are there any circumstances where the LED *doesn't* show up well? The TS9 LED is quite dim, IMO.

  • does this pedal go well with el84's on the power amp? say a mathcless dc30? please help as i really like the sound of the review, but would it sound like that in a dc30? tanks

  • @acm12358 - The amp we demoed this pedal through has EL84's. I'm sure it would sound great with your DC30. Thanks! - PGS

  • @ProGuitarShopDemos Would you say that this would sound good like this on an Orange TH30 clean channel? Thanks

  • what pedal does joe trohman use in fall out boy ?

  • @aditsetan who gives a fuck?

  • if an ibanez is a distortion pedal on steroids then this one is fuckin on cocaine!!!!!!!

  • i like how this guy has to use the craziest guitar and amp gear on the market to demo.

  • I do not believe in true bypass. if I plug the guitar straight into amp and play it will sound identical if I plugged the pedal but without it be working?

  • I have such a pedal, in my opinion is the best drive on the planet ever!!!!!!!!

  • you really can't go wrong with any type of ts

  • Can someone guide me or something... i have the maxon od-808 and a pedal board. when i switch to clean on my pedal board going from distortion i still have my pedal on and it muds up the clean channel obviously. anyone have a suggestion or am i going to have to switch the Od-808 off before switching to clean..

  • @XxXUnLoAdEdXxX Dude have a look at the Gigrig. It's a great switching system that puts your pedals in loops, and uses relay switching to create patches. Each patch will only use the loop you have preset to it, and you can have up to 6 loops on any of 8 presets you program yourself (couldn't be easier btw) on their midi 8 model. So you can go from having dist, comp, delay, phase, whatever, to a clean sound (or with your tubesreamer activated) in the touch of a button. A must have for pedals.

  • Can someone tell me if adding an overdrive to a distortion will boost the tone or distortion, I have a tube amp as it stands?

  • @hate420breed If you've got a high gain amp, like a 6505, 5150, Krank, etc., use a Tube Screamer or one of it's 10 000 available replica in front of the amp, gain at 0, level as desired, tone as desired.

    Thank me later ;)

  • Favorite pedal ever right here. Much better than a stock TS-9 from any year, and sounds more natural than any of the modded Ibanez pedals as well.

    Maxon knows Overdrive.

  • why did they make it look exactly like Ibanez Tube Screamer??? so they could fool people?

  • @DannyOFtod Really dude?

  • @DannyOFtod Maxon made the circutry for the ibanez pedals and just decided to put out their own pedal the way they wanted it.

  • @guitarfreak122. Yo, whatsup guitarfteak, not tryin to bo one of those know it all douches, just a little FYI for all. I own an origina SD-9l (bought new)I think Maxon actually made the whole pedal...circuit, die-cast case, battery cover. Ther name and logo is all over the pedal on the inside.

  • can this pedal improve my tone if i put it right before a metal zone? i know it's not the best, but i know that you can do some good stuff with it

  • can i get a blackmore sound with this???

  • is this the same as the ts9 or ts808? same design

  • Does the PGS channel have a demo of the Ibanez TS 9 also? I'm interested in how comparable the sound is between he OD-9 and the TS-9.

  • Can u use this pedal In a Ibanez MIMX 65 To boost the distortion? its a solid state amp

  • @SEVIL999 Don't see why not :)

  • ha custard pie, zeppelin, i like it

  • This sounds grittier and crunchier than a TS9. I owned both a TS9 and Turbo TS and sold them both cus they just didn't really do what I wanted. I used them with a JCM 800 and the sound just wasn't there. I'd like an overdrive that has enough guts to be the actual distortion signal on the low input.

  • What's the difference between OD-9 and SD-9 ?

  • @Yo9038 The SD-9 has more low end, and it is a distortion pedal while the OD-9 is an overdrive petal

  • i have the maxon od9 pro +

    that pedal has balls

my buddy has the ts keeley , and the maxon smokes it

  • Wow, what a coincedence

  • Would this work well with a Mesa Single Rectifier? I heard it can really bring out the gain, and I was looking at using it for a good high gain like BTBAM or Opeth.

  • i use this with my jcm 800 its unreal

  • @munchy040 does it clean up with the volume knob?

  • this with an ac15/blackheart in conjuction with a telecaster or a cyclone II sounds fucking amazing!

  • 2:26 ------> Custard Pie.....nice

  • which tube screamer would i use for metal?

  • do people use tubescreamers for metal? i always thought that they boosted their signals with higher gain pedals like the distortion+ or louder "clean" boosts like the micro amp

  • yeah just about every metal guitarist does

  • people use distortion pedals/amp distortion and boost it with an od

  • most metal players use a od ( tube screamer, boss od*1 or zack wyild od) into thier dirty chanel on a high gain amp as an extra boost/crunch.

  • @sameol1 ZAKK WYLDE!

  • @KG739 no

  • To KG739: Sir for Metal you can use the Ibanez Metal Screamer. It's already rare so it's kinda expensive.

  • Boss Mt-2, I've heard its a good metal pedal, try it out.

  • You may flame on me now but as time passes you will realise that boss pedals are no good

  • @topografer

I wouldn't say that. I don't use Boss myself, I don't really like 'em. Bot a whole lot of guys, even pros, get great results with Boss pedals. But yeah, I think their drives sound a bit to raspy and "pedally". The BD-2 is quite decent though!

  • @topografer There are good ones too. Metal ones are crap, like the Metal Zone, but for example the distortion DS-1 is one of the best worldwide (if Vai, Frusciante and people like this uses it there must be a reason!), and the same is for the Fuzz FZ-5, the clean Booster/Feedbacker and the Delays...And BOSS is cheap!

  • Comment removed

  • which has the lowest gain: ts9, ts808, od808, od9, fulldrive anyone please?

  • Maxon OD9 has the same chip as TS9... But how does it compare to the Ibanez TS-808? So freakin confusing.

  • @dbenc no, not the same. Maxon Od 9 has the "famous" jrc4558d chip, Ibanez TS 9 reissue has another one which sounds worse. The difference between a TS 9 and a TS 808 are about the chip and the value of two output resistors.

  • rap

  • You can also mod these pedals! check out Monte Allum, I used one of his mods on my tubescreamer and it sounds great :)

  • I'm getting confused on wat to get now! This, Ts9, Ts808, or ts9dx. I play rock and blues and alot of the time i would use it as a boost, but sometimes just to push my tube amp into overdrive. Any advice?

  • I would stay away from Ibanez and go for Maxon (which is basically vintage ibanez sold new). TS9s and 808s have lack of bass...this one: none. Check out any Maxon OD any of them will be perfect for you.

  • I've got the MXR GT-OD which is great , too.

  • Is this good with P-90s?

  • MUCHO GRANDE GOOD!

  • yep

  • im sure it would sound great. i've heard it humbuckers and it sounds great.

  • What's the first song he plays?

  • badge at 4:30 or what!!! yay

  • can this pedal be used in an already dirty amp??

  • yes, that's usually preferred since it's a med gain pedal.

  • @ProGuitarShopDemos does this pedal go well with el84's on the power amp? say a mathcless dc30? please help as i really like the sound of the review, but would it sound like that in a dc30? thanks

  • @dragonboy2992 This pedal sounds great on my Mesa Triple Rectifier (and Peavey 5150) on the 2nd channel. I don't set the gain THAT high on the amp(1 o clock on vintage high gain), and also set this pedal for more of a clean boost, and it makes a tight crunch and turn the gain up more and you can play all sort of metal (that's what most metal/metalcore bands do anyway i.e. Killswitch Engage, God Forbid, etc.)

  • what is the difference between the Maxon od-9 and an Ibanez ts9?

  • maxon uses higher quality components than ibanez. the od9 gives a more natural sound imo

  • what's better, this or the od808? there's like a $7 difference at guitar center and i have more then enough money. and believe me i've looked at nearlly all other ODs so i know what i want. So please don't recommend a different pedal to me...and sorry for bein picky. :/

  • what amp do your play through and what sound are you looking for?

  • i play through a fender deluxe reverb...however i dont want to overdrive the amp i just want an overdrive tone

  • the difference in sound isn't big, but the main difference is that this uses a tube circut, while the od808 uses solid state. thats the main difference

  • actually its very different, this pedal has more mids giving you a more aggressive attack. and the od808 is much smother.

also the big thing is this is true bypass and the 808 is NOT

  • to be honest, i don't care about bypass. And it's maxon, it can't color your tone THAT much

  • @ilovemyfender1

this is true..idk some people are really crazy about that..but i could care less

  • this or bb preamp?

  • two diff effects

the Maxon is more of a vintage tube screamer sound and it is mainly an overdrive with nice high end.

the bb preamp has higher gain and is more of a dist with big ass nuts.

i like them both ; depends what you need

  • If anyone tries to tell you that Maxon copied Ibanez, slap 'em!

    LOL;-)

  • MAXON AND IBANEZ IS THE SAME COMPANY

  • Not anymore.

  • THis thing sounds better than the TS9.... but its also 5 bucks more....bummer.

  • you mean 50 :/

  • is this pedal better than the robert keeley mod?

  • If you get it modded by keeley or AnaLoGmAn it is IMO better than a TS9 modded by Keeley. It has true bypass and a more organic analog sound. It is also made in the old TS9 factory. The new TS9's are not.

  • What's the song at 2:27?

  • It's custard pie by Led Zeppelin. The song is on the album Physical Graffiti.

  • I want to see reviev of MAXON SD-9

  • whats the song he played 2.30?

  • custard pie...zep.

  • buenisimo,gran tono!!!!mucho mejor que el ts 9

  • jim root from slipknot now uses this for solos

  • looks kinda like the ibanez tube screamer pedal.

  • it does, but ALOT better, best on the market

  • That's 'cause Maxon -made- these for Ibanez. Now that Maxon isn't affiliated with Ibanez, they focus on more premium quality versions of the pedals they used to make for Ibanez

  • i think this has a better tone than the TS9

  • compressions all good if you play like All That Remains, etc. but really a guitar needs these types of boosted mids for cool overdrive leads. I play through a Mesa Boogie Road King II and setting it to the brit channel (plexi marshall type sound) and turning on an od gives a great zeppelin-y type chime/slap

  • what is the name/band of the cool song played just at the beginning???

  • you mean the real intro song that is always played at the beggining of the videos?

  • How does this compare to the OD9-pro? anyone try that? Any key differences that would make you not get the regular one?

  • the od-9 pro has a boost switch

  • yea,i have the od-9 pro it boosts your mids with a switch

  • The maxon vop9 is better sounding imo.

Much fatter and fuller. Do some AB testing.

    ivé tryed them all.

  • good sounds

  • I praise this pedal for having the same stuff inside as the original TS9, but this pedal to me sounds kind of mucky and doesn't have that clarity I want. maybe just my preferences, I don't know

  • this is a you tube video what do you expect for the sound?

  • How much to these cost?

  • 150 US smackaroos

  • if ure looking for the ulimate overdrive try the hbe power screamer

  • anyone know what would pedal would sound heavier, and more crushing?(like adamn D from killswitch engage kinda tone) the EH metal muff,

    the OD-9, or the OD-808?

  • the guys in killswitch both use this exact pedal. They run it along with the dirty channel on their amps. If you are looking for a very crushing distorted tone, you probably wont find it with stomp boxes. You need to find an amo with a good channel two.

  • You mean they use the OD808 pedal.

  • I'm pretty sure Paul Waggoner from Between the Buried and Me uses this pedal as well.

I think I'm gonna get this for Christmas :D

  • yea he does

but how does he get his guitar to get a thick, heavy distorted sound with just an overdrive pedal?

i dont get it lol, im oretty sure someone from Killswitch Engage (also a metal band) uses a Maxon too

  • what a lot of metal guys do, is they set the gain on their amp to 4-5, then they turn on an OD that has the drive turned all the way down and the level turned up a bit. it gives you a tight, chunky sound

  • I know he uses a Tube Screamer. I ran up to the front of the crowd to take a look!

    WHITE WALLS!!!

  • Metal Muff

  • Sucks.

  • does this pedal have a tube in it?

  • im a freaking drummer and i even knew there wasnt a tube in there...sheesh

  • rofl's

  • LOLZ!! ahAHhahAHhahAHha

  • Simple, great sounding and classic. Great for studio use and straight out rock and roll songs.

  • to my ears the OD9 is the closest to tube amp overdrive I've heard.

  • Is this the only Tubescreamer (ibanez or maxon) with true bypass???????

  • Does anyone know the song proguitarshop starts all of their videos with?

  • Yes! It is called the PGS intro song. It's not a song. It's our intro.

  • it's awesome ^^

  • Yeah I need to work out that riff... unless of course... you tell me.

  • Cmon, its Hear my train a comin :P.

  • @ProGuitarShopDemos sounds rather "Black keys-esque"

  • I've always wondered the same.

  • ZEPPELIN RUWLEZ!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey they're now making maxon OD-9 and more pedals with real mini vaccuum tubes. They'll be out in the late summer-fall. Can't wait for the demos

  • i hear so much about these pedals.

so do they like boost high gain tube amps like alot?

cuz pretty much everyone of my fave bands uses this and i must know

  • Whats the best dist/od pedal combo for a modern rock sound? (paramore, mcr, taking back sunday, billy talent etc.)

  • Something that scoops the mids, oh and the lows....yeah that'll do it.

  • "Scoops the mids!" If you want scooped mids a TS type pedal is probably the last thing you want, they're famous for they're mid-range BUMP!

  • one of these running as a boost (so the gain all the way down) this tightens up your sound and gives it some punch. run this all the time, and for distortion it's your choice really. the krank krankenstein distortus maximus has a variable sound and is 'modern' sounding. or you could just run two overdrives next to each other - one as a boost, then one with some gain dialled in to use for the louder bits. its all good!

  • Likea Metal zone or somthing.. What amp are you using... i normally use my amps Distortion. and get an overdrive pedal(like the maxon OD808) and my line 6 half stack distortion.

  • What is an actual difference between OD9 and OD808? They have pretty same controls and sound.

  • I have one of these and they are great. i use it with my boss ds-1 keeley mod

  • Maxon was the OEM for Ibanez. A brand new Maxon "tube screamer" is more authentic than a new Ibanez Tube Screamer. Maxon was always the real thing . Ibanez is now the fake.

  • correct

  • damn this is kinda pricy....is it worth the 50$ more, or the 110$ more than the ts-5?

btw i'd just like to say you guys make the greatest demos, they really show off the pedals well.

  • the sound is amazing plus its true bypass!

  • stealing ibanez's look... bad style :(

  • Maxon manufactures many Ibanez pedals.

  • Maxon used to be the OEM for Ibanez effects in the 70's so it's not really stealing as Maxon made the pedals for Ibanez!

  • Actually, I believe that this style of box was developed by Maxon, since they were the ones building the original Ibanez pedals (TS included) back in the 70`s. They must have all the rights to use it.

Someone correct me if I`m wrong.

  • They actually builded them for Ibanez until 2002.

  • dude... read the description. if i could slap ya, i would.

  • hes right, maxon DID build these for ibanez until a certain point, watch. put the same settings on this as a ibanez ts 9 and a/b them, the maxon will sound more warm, cuz ibanez started making there own (dumb decision)

  • slap slap slap

  • Hahaha! Whap!
