  • Semper Fi! God bless America!

  • I wish somebody had given Sousa a free holiday in Canada or something and tempted him to write a march for my country!

  • All I need now is a can of spinisk.

  • @branek52 Took me a few seconds of "WTF?" before I got it. X-D

  • Yay for piccolo solos! I love how everything sound so crisp and clean, but that is a military band for ya the expect perfection

  • more fife!

  • now that is how this song is played!!!! Yes I know what I am talking about!! 26 years as a harpist here!

  • That piccolo solo gave me chills, so perfectly executed! The rest of the band sounds fantastic too, this is truly the quintessential American march!

  • I am trying to learn the pic solo, and it is fast!

  • Long live to the american people (the true people, men and women, families) who really wants and seeks peace, prosperity and freedom for themselves and all over the wolrd.

  • great to be an american... bars and strippers forever!

  • Okay we understand "the flag is in the way," at least a little bit. That's no excuse to shake the camera like a retard.

  • Fabulous piccolo playing. Never heard it cleaner, never heard it better.

  • This is just amazing

  • Whenever I play this, or any other recording of the Stars and Stripes Forever, my cat crawls all over me when she hears the piccolo solo. Maybe it sounds like a bird to her.

  • The Picc player is awesome

  • How can any American give a thumbs down to this?

  • This march it is so uplifting that the Germans used during World War (II) to welcome back their submarines when they arrive to port.

  • @wysiwyg248 Really? Where did you read that?

  • @ProfHoax

I didn't read it, it was shown in a documentary interviewing German U-Boat personnel that moved to America after the WWII. They were shocked when realized this is an American march LOL.

  • What a fantastic piece of music! An what a marvelously played piccolo solo!

    Greetings from Iceland!

  • Hell yes *salute*

  • if this is American, why does the Conductor have one of those Afro hats on that British Guards use?

  • @bennie128 Your question implied you thought this was British. You retard.

  • @dasteufelhund my question implied that if this is in America, why do they have the same Afro hats on that look the as the British guards use. You Retard.

  • @bennie128The bear skin hat has been utilized by military bands all over the world, the fact you said "look as the same as the British guards.." is the reason why I called you a retard. It is not reserved for British alone.

  • @dasteufelhund Also, it may well have been in Britain. Just because its an American Military song doesnt mean its ONLY played in America. You know, there is a huge World out there beyond America, you should read a Map, brush up on your Geography a little

  • @bennie128 Sousa's The Stars and Stripes is the national march for America and he is/was an American. There are marches played by others military bands just as US bands play marches by non American composers. The S&S is meant for the US and if any other military band plays it, it would not have the same meaning. Map reading is not a pre-requiste as your understanding to musicology on the most generic level is very poor and it shows through your reasoning.

  • @dasteufelhund "your understanding to musicology on the most generic level is very poor" yes i agree, since Musicology doesnt interest me in the slightest so there is no point in me learning about something that i dont like

  • @bennie128 Yes yes, that came through the first time, hence the word "retard" is such an appropriate and fitting word for you, do consider yourself schooled.

  • @dasteufelhund Calling me Retarded for not liking the same things you do. GOOD LOGIC THERE

  • @bennie128 Ah here comes the changing of topic, one which you couldn't hold. Retard.

  • @bennie128 Do try to understand, by calling you a retard I am saying you are dumb as shit and the way you change topic from the bear skin hat to, the use of piece and changed again, "not liking the same thing as you do" is posted for all to see, and people do read. You just keep on changing because you can't use google to come up anything good. No logic was required to point out you shit yourself and your brain openly on youtube.

  • @bennie128 You're not a retard. I asked the same question too. U.S was a British Colony as you might know. We have kept some of their traditions. ONLY the Drum Major/The Conductor wear the Bear skin hats. Theyre not afro lol

  • 3 pple are terroust

  • Great tempo, I am so proud to be an American Stripes and Bars forever

  • @ciudaddeplata its stars and stripes num nuts

  • @Mradel1996

    I stand corrected

  • Adapted by John Philip Sousa none the less. Hence the name "Sousaphone."

  • @TravellerFellow Yes, but more or less same instrument just adapted for marching. They are called tubas outside of the States, but they aren't exactly common.

  • Gotta love the tubas at 2 minutes.

  • are they british?

  • @EddyRockStedy No there american

  • I did this piccolo solo for our high school band when I was in the tenth grade. I got a standing ovation for it. It is one terrific solo.

  • Fantastic job for the piccolo player

  • Trill feels slow.

  • which dickheads disliked this?

  • @camoblackhawk europeans.

  • @jnoobs31 figures as much

  • Faboulous. The entire band should get medals for this, and that piccolo player, she's magnificent

  • The un-fair???

  • For nearly four decades The Souza Band, under John Philip Souza, was the most successful musical organization in the country playing not only all over the world but in every city and small town in America. And every concert ended with "Stars and Stripes Forever." During the last few years before Souza died in 1932 one of the band's piccolo players was Meredith Wilson, who went on to write the greatest American musical --- "The Music Man,"

  • @agatematt All that's good to know - but his name is Sousa, not Souza.

  • American dad :p

  • wait where the saxes? i dont see them

  • @9598dad I think i see some in the fourth row from the front.

  • I had to hit Ctrl+D

  • Who is the lady playing piccolo?

  • Very good piccolo!!!

  • O.o imagine the piccolo screwing up on a solo. >.< Thatd be sad...

  • did anyone hear a baby crying during this

  • @MrDumasian at 1:49? yep

  • Sounds so different when you've got top players doing it.

  • Thank you for the video! Not everyone records videos for a living so don't worry about the lack of a tripod. Video is just fine.

  • 素晴らしい!

  • Beautiful clarinets!!! and PICCOLO!

  • THIS NEEDS TO THE NATIONAL ANTHEM

  • @kingtaythe2 IT CAN`T! IT AINT GOT NO LYRICS!!!!!!!

  • @casinobowling The dutch national anthem doesnt have words it is an instrumental

  • @kingtaythe2 First of all we are both wrong! I have done som reasearch and it turns out that BOTH "Stars And Stripes Forever, AND The Dutch National Anthem has got LYRICS!

The first verse to Wilhelmus (The Dutch National Anthem:

    Wilhelmus van Nassouwe

    Ben ick van Duytschen bloet,

    Den Vaderlant getrouwe

Blyf ick tot in den doet:

    Een Prince van Oraengien

    Ben ick vrij onverveert,

    Den Coninck van Hispaengien

Heb ick altijt gheeert. There are 29 more verses!!!!

  • @kingtaythe2 THE CHORUS TO "STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER" WRITTEN BY SOUSA HIMSELF: Hurrah for the flag of the free! May it wave as our standard forever, The gem of the land and the sea, The banner of the right. Let despots remember the day When our fathers with mighty endeavor Proclaimed as they marched to the fray That by their might and by their right It waves forever.
  • Start after commentary is 0:26 if anyone is impatient. (Nice for re-listening)

  • My room was second foor 6th room just left of flag pole 1971 ... Semper Fidelis..

  • That piccolo solo,....orgasmic..

  • Wonderful piccolo. :)

  • Is this "The President's Own"? I thought only they were allowed to wear the Red Jackets.

  • @dkseaverns1 Military musicians tradionally have always worn the reverse colors of their regiment. So, if a British regiment wore red coats with yellow facings, the musicians would wear yellow coats with red facings. Musicians (fifers, drummers, ect.) passed orders musically, especially during battle where the voice couldn't be easily heard. The reverse colors made it easy for officers to find them. US Marines wear blue with red facings, so their musicians would wear red with blue facings.

  • @DBMalone IDK, I played a Marine band from GA when I was in HS, and they wore the Blue Jackets...

  • @dkseaverns1 played with

  • @dkseaverns1 Since I sent the last note, I've seen other Marine bands on youtube, and they were also wearing the blue jackets. So, I think you are correct that only the President's Own wears the red jacket. My guess is that all Marine bands at one time wore the red jacket, but now that right is reserved for the President's Own.

  • @DBMalone I remember seeing the President's Own at Wolf Trap in VA, and I believe that they said that they (besides other historical regiments like the Fife and Drum Corps) were the only ones who wore the red Jackets in all Marine Units.

  • @dkseaverns1 If you look at videos of the Old Guard's fife and drum corps (they are regular army in G. Washington's Continental Army uniforms), they are wearing red with blue facings. Regiments from mid Atlantic states in Washington's army wore blue coats with red facings, so these musicians are wearing the reverse colors. BTW, facings are the collar, cuffs, and lapels on a military coat. If they were representing a New England regiment, muscians would have worn white coats with blue facings.

  • @DBMalone True, but that's following the old style that they do, not modern day.

  • @dkseaverns1 My point exactly. That's 18th/early 19th century military regs. But, our traditions come from somewhere, and this is where I think the President's Own Marine Band gets their uniforms.

  • @DBMalone Aye, I just looked it up. Fleet bands wear the standard Dress Blues, while the President's Own, and the Marind Drum and Bugle corps are the only ones to hear the red jacket. It won't let me post here but look under Wiki for Uniforms of The United States Marine Corps.

  • @dkseaverns1 I see that. Thanks. The article also said this.

"To differentiate themselves from the infantry, musicians—at that time, buglers and signal callers—would reverse the traditional colors. Today's Marine Corps musicians still carry on this tradition by wearing a scarlet blouse with blue trim instead of the Dress Blues blouse." Continued.....

  • @dkseaverns1 Continued...

"Currently, the Red-Dress uniform is worn only by members of the United States Marine Band and the United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, both based in Washington, D.C.; members of the twelve fleet bands wear standard Marine uniforms."

  • @dkseaverns1 So.. in answer to your question, I'm not sure. But if it is reserved for the President's Own, they are merely following military tradition.

  • is this the Washington DC Barracks? i was at the parade last friday

  • man. give dude or chick a break. i have a tremor in my hand and if you think this is bad, you oughta see video i shoot! lol.

  • ah the sunset parade, I was at one last summer. awesome stuff

  • undoubtedly sousa's greatest march - perhaps the finest ever written - sousa was a march genius for sure - the us marine band is a good choice - unfortunately not the best video - perhaps someone else can do better?

  • @sousafan100 He wrote The Liberty Bell March... aka., the Monty Python theme. :-)

  • magnifico me gusto el solo de piccolo yo toco piccolo y flauta i play piccolo and flute good me gusto felicdades

  • Piccolo Soloist needed a little better trill but she still did REALLY good, she must of been nervous thats why.

  • get a tripod buddy.

  • @420frankyd its not about the visual, its about the music. :D and this music is awesome

  • @420frankyd yeah...buy a freakin' tripod if your gonna do some serious recording.

  • @420frankyd How about you go to the evening parade and film your own version, or you could stop bitching.

  • @420frankyd Maybe he didn't have one, or the stands don't allow for a tripod. VERY good video

  • @420frankyd

He probably couldn't fit it in front of his chair between he and the people at his 12. Sometimes you just don't have that luxury of good space

  • Great piece, crappy video.

  • oohraa

  • The poor flute soloist looks terrified! Maybe that's just their concentration face, but I feel sorry for them even though they did really well.

  • Comment removed

  • @olddeuteronomy it is a piccolo

  • @olddeuteronomy "...The poor flute soloist looks terrified..." Nah, it's just their stage persona. Everyone in this band is there because they wanted the gig and because they're among the best players you'll find.

  • @brassplyer its a piccolo

  • @johnnyreb455 Yeah, I knew what they meant, was responding to the spirit of their comment.

  • In honor of all my friends that marched with me in the Carnation Festival. I do not know if we sounded this good but I had fun and I love the music. Here is to Phil Vance for his guidance love for music and giving me the chance to lead the marching band to such a great song. I am marching away at 4:30 AM. I must be nuts.

  • absolutely GREAT

  • Tubadude, I too am shocked to see so few "heavy brass" on the deck. I think you should contact the band and tell them you'd like to see 4 out there and the sound would benefit for sure.

    Caro,

if they don't do boot camp and aren't "real Marines" then what are they? Fake Marines simply hired to play the Corps tunes and make the "real" Marines feel more proud about what they do? Is there a don't ask, don't tell policy there as well? I know lots of musicians are gay.

  • @brettbw48 i agree about the lack of low brass, but hey, that's how most bands are. my high school's marching band only has 15 low brass players out of 125 band members. i play base trombone myself, and i was shocked to see that we only had 4 incoming freshman out of 53.

  • This is a nice, clean, light band sound that all wind bands should strive for. I was shocked to see only two sousaphones, but they insolate the sound well. Also, very nice piccolo solo!

  • They stay for years because although the pay isn't great they have time to pursue their musical talents and they get great medical and retirement. Can't get that anywhere else.

  • what about the pay? why do they stay? is the musical experience so good that they stay or is it that they just need a gig?

  • The piccolo player in this clip went to University of Ohio for her undergraduate degree and got her master's degree at Carnegie Mellon.

  • They have special designation and are not real "Marines" as you may be thinking. They are the President's own and do not go to boot camp. They are professional musicians that hold masters degrees and Phd's in music. A lot of them have their own studios and teach music. The funny thing is they all hold an enlisted rank and most are higher educated then a lot of the Marine Officers. People don't realize that. They are not kids out of boot camp.

  • No, we're not arguing, we're discussing the relative excellence of this performance of the Marine Band.

Now, how could a bunch of guys and gals that go thru USMC boot camp and survive it, possible come out and play as well as you say?

  • AND if they had masters and doctorates in music, HOW IN THE WORLD WOULD THE BE ENLISTED AND NOT OFFICERS? If you're right, then they are getting screwed royally in terms of pay.

  • I heard the Navy band play on Thursday as a matter of fact. My daughter is a harpist and we had the pleasure of meeting the Navy Band's harpist. You are WRONG they are not fresh from boot camp. Our best friend was XO of the Barracks and this was taped on his last evening on staff. I know the working's of 8th and I. You are arguing with the wrong person.

  • Caro.

Dude get real. There are line Marines, just fresh from boot camp. They have 0 chance of playing this piece well. Listen to the tongue and blow articulation in the trombones. Have you ever heard the Navy band? Those cats can really sound off on Anchors Away!

  • You are and Idiot brettbw48. These musicians all hold Masters Degrees and Phd's in music. I taped this with a simple little digital camera not a video camera, you can't possibly critique the music quality. They are excellent, their uniforms are pressed beautifully, the lighting is bad with my little camera. My husband is a retired Marine Colonel, you bad mouth this band you bad mouth the Marine Corp.

  • lots of loose mvmt out there.

Seems to me that someone would be proactive and address these issues.

did anyone press those uniforms or get a hair cut BEFORE stepping on the most sacred rectangle in the USMC?

Need more crispness in the after beats!

Need more articulation in the bones,

Need more trumpet low G in "This Is My Country"

  • Need louder farts after the "Report" just before the lights come up

  • god i love the dog fight in this march so much

  • flawless

  • Nice warm tuba sound from the sousaphones, another one could have been used without much too much overkill. Overall great

  • Wow!!!!

  • Very nice.
